They already have cameras at Chantilly HS in the lunch lines. It is nothing new.

At Chantilly HS, did they ever teach you the difference between "its" and it's?"

When I went to Chantilly I would steal 2 or 3 milks every day, never got caught.
This was before they had cameras in there.

I believe this is some of the greatest evidence we have of our school administration undergoing dire times, with numerous budget cuts, and the actual approval of regulations (to me, it seems more like a scheme) like this.

If our economy was in a different state, and the school system was doing healthier, then I doubt such an idea would actually be approved and implemented, as the reality is probably that the schools are going to spend more money on these cameras, than they will get back from the students. Also, the fact that they must set up the students for such petty, miniscule thefts I think is rather pathetic (no offense to the school board overall).

The schools they are testing it out are Annandale, Mount Vernon, Westfield, Lake Braddock, Robinson and South County.

Those are probably the schools with the most theft.

Wonder why South Lakes isnt on there?

Will they have signs saying "Shoplifters will be prosecuted?"
Will they actually prosecute?

Because FCPS would rather the students at South Lakes steal the inexpensive food than the expensive video taping equipment. And by the way, this thread proves FCPS are doing one heck of a job teaching apostrophe usage!

When I was a student at Annandale, I don't think anyone
ever stole food from the lunch line. We didn't have
cameras, and we didn't have theft. Something has changed.

I never saw any cameras at Chantilly in the lunch line and I just graduated this year. If they had them the county is wasting its money because people stole food there everyday and I only know of one that got caught.

No thefts at West Potomac or JEB Stuart either

They could use them at Rachel Carson where it seems some preferred adding to the food, as opposed to stealing it.

Taxes need to be raised so all students get free lunch.

I would steal ice cream sandwiches when I attended elementary school. By the time I attended middle school I was stealing entire cases of frozen char-burger patties, and was pimping 3 out of the "hottest" lunch ladies.

High School was open season on the US Foods and Sysco Trucks that delivered the food to our school. The food was sold for cash to buy guns for the Contras.

The rest is history.

I think a 2 million video surveillance system and several new IT staff to support and monitor it are a great way to stem this tide of food theft.

Money well spent, and spent, and spent.

FCPS Food Services is self-supporting - no tax dollars - all support comes from food sales.

There are multiple thefts per day of single items from each higher-level school. If the thefts amount to ONLY, say, $10/day (out of the typical 2000 meals served per high school) then you're talking $2000-ish/year.

Per school.

Cameras and monitors by the serving lines MIGHT cut back some of that theft.

Why don't they just take the orders as the kid walks along the cafe line ordering what he/she wants, and the tray gets shoved along the inside service line until it ends at the cashier, who has a sidekick that hands over the tray of food AFTER the kid pays for everything on it.

So we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on surveillance systems to save maybe $2000 a year on pilfered food. Wasteful spending.
