http://media.bonnint.net/wtop/19/1978/197838.jpg

The roller rink site was on the block now occupied by the Sheraton Suites in north old town (Madison & St Asaph) and it hosted major shows (The Doors, King Crimson, B.O.C., Yarbirds, Sabbath, Alice Cooper). Yes, in the space where yuppies now dine at Finn & Hoof and hail the sommelier, Iggy Pop once crawled around like a madman and local boy Jim Morrison popped out his wiener.

The Sex Pistols never played Alexandria. They were supposed to kick off their doomed US tour at the Alexandria Roller Rink, but visa and scheduling difficulties pushed their tour back a week or so. For those that find it an odd location for an epic punk tour, remember that their idea was to blaze through the bible belt for the sake of bad publicity and riling the locals. The tickets for the canceled concert can fetch a few bucks, if you have one.

The proprietor of the former record stores on King Street (Art "Lobo" Wray) had some wild stories about Alexandria and northern VA pre-gentrification/pussification. I wish I knew where he was these days. We used to talk for hours about music.

I dont think the Stones did a set at the Bayou. People were expecting them to the day they checked into the Dolley Madison Hotel the day before the three nights at the Capital Centre. Kixx was playing if I remember correctly. I was told they weren't going to show up and was told it was sold out show and no one was there to see Kixx.

You may be confused with a 1979 show they did at the Warner Theater. But is was not a walk on. Tickets were sold in advance.

The DC punk scene--Bad Brains, Henry Rollins & Black Flag, Ian McKaye & Fugazi etc.

Horrible hairstyles. Crusty, overdyed, permed and teased coifs. Back in the day, I honestly found the popular hair trends absolutely hideous.

Leather & Members Only jackets, denim vests.

Dave Grohl was a local skater kid, worked at Tower Records and was involved in garage bands.

Cheap cassette tapes were rampant, instead of mp3 players or CDs. No DVDs, only VHS tapes were available.

MTv was worth watching.

Obesity was uncommon. You'd see the odd fat person from time-to-time, although never obese.

Bad 80's metal(Ratt, Quiet Riot, Poison, Motley Crue etc)and conversely, good metal(Judas Priest, Pantera, Skid Row, Megadeth).

Springfield Mall didn't suck. It had the arcade(Time Out), a movie theater, several restaurants and decent stores.

Fairfax County still had its share of genuine rednecks.

McMansion-neighborhoods didn't exist in FFXco.

Record & tape businesses were huge--Sam Goody, Suncoast, Tower Records and so forth--all of which are now long-gone.

Learning how to break-dance.

Although Day-Glo spandex and lace has become synonymous with the '80s, that's an exaggeration. Most people I knew didn't consider Madonna or LA coke-whores fashion icons. I often wore skintight dark-wash jeans, Nike Dunks and a band t-shirt and certainly wasn't in the minority.

On that note, some 80's fashion aesthetics truly WERE whack; pantsuits with shoulder-pads, bright pink/red lipstick, bleached hair, garish cheap-o jewelry, high waist acid wash jeans, cut-off shirts, parachute pants...

Affordable fuel prices; far less commuter traffic.

Field parties w/bonfires and boom-boxes. Nobody ever called the cops to bitch about the noise.

Wasn't Wally the owner’s name?
I remember there used to be a record store across from Fortuna where I acquired my first records. Also the barber shop my old man forced me to get my hair cut one day and almost busted me in the mouth because I got pissed at him.

Yeah Wally was a big greasy dude. His pizza was square or rectangular and had kind of a sweet sauce, it was not NY or Philly style pizza. I worked part time at Aristo dry cleaners and we went to fortuna quite a bit.

CHESAPEAKE BAY SEAFOOD HOUSE!!
Most expensive thing on the menu was $15 all you can eat king crab legs, which got you all the other less expensive all-you-can-eats too, just for variety - shrimp, mussels, scallops, etc. We'd skip school and eat their for hours until we were cross-eyed. Poor guys had no chance of staying in business. A place like that will never be replicated.

SLEDDING ON HANNAHS HILL!!
Some of those bond fires were taller than humans. Great hill, great meeting spot.

Oakton's Friendly's Ice Cream Parlor
The place to find out where the 80s party's were. Hot girls who worked there and those old fashioned uniforms which tastefully sported their breasts. Getting in whip cream fights with those industrial sized canisters that would shoot across the room. Emptying them of gas in the back room, when the whip was gone... hey, they didn't call it "friendly's" for nothing!! *LOL*

Scalping Tickets to The Who's Final Tour for $20 & $25 (stage right, 16th row up, talk about good seats)
Hey, don't laugh!! I was the pimp of my day, I got them for $16 and made a cool $4 on over a dozen of them and $9 on some of them (suckers!).

Lifeguarding My Summers Away
Getting aborigie-gold & sun streaked to DC 101. Leaving work at 8pm to go to parties. Waking up comfortably by noon to leave directly to work and do it all again.

TONY FLAGG!!
Yep Mr. Berdhuis *wink, wink*. A community phantom, like robinhood, that was credited with a community-worth of pranks and became a codeword of sorts for those in the know. Based on the leader of a mythological non-existant band of the same name. Phantom/Person/Band/all-of-the-above.

GREATEST REDSKINS HEYDEY EVER!!
A time & age when the Redskins could do no wrong.
Cowboys favored in the NFC Championship and doing epic loads of trash talking?
. . . Eh, knock out their QB with a concussion & embarrass them out of the game.
Fourth&One in the Superbowl?
. . . Eh, punch it up the middle & take it in for the touchdown too.
Trade starting QB-Jay Schroeder for starting OL-Jim Lachey?
. . . Schroeder disappears out of the league & Lachey goes all-pro three times
Switch to the aging QB-Doug Williams after the youthful Schraeder?
. . . Eh, William MVPs in the Superbowl.
Gibbs has to battle the division with Hall of Famers like Tom Laundry & Bill Parcells?
. . . Eh, Gibbs wins more superbowls in the 80s than both of them did in their lives.

Imagine a time when... Joe Theisman was actually cool & Dexter Manley was actually clean. WOW! Seems like a long, long time ago.

Yes "Sledding Hill Lane" became quite a quaint name for people who had never sledded on it before. And some of those houses look like the godfather lives there now.

Friendly's - last one is in Sterling. If I have to have a Reeses Pieces Sunday, it's there for me.

Chesapeake Bay Seafood House - now days for a seafood fix, on wednesdays 5-8, Chantilly's Bungalow Billards has a $15 lobster, $7 crab legs (half pound), and
$7 shrimp (half pound). As an adult that is about all-I-can-eat now days (or as I say, all-I-can-weigh *lol*). With a twenty year inflation handycap that's not bad - twice the price but with a lobster upgrade.

Tony Flagg - I hear ya, he's hard to find, he lays low, sneaks around and pays peoples bar tabs when they are not looking. He's gotten me a couple of times.

LOL. Benny Hill. I remember that, but it wasn't what I was talking about. If you switched your TV to the channel that SuperTV broadcasted to and got the rabbit ears on the TV just right, you could pick up the signal...sort of. It was black/white, looked more like a negative, and had some squiggles, but you could make it out. It sufficed, but then my friend's dad subscribed and we could watch it legit. On mute, in an attic. Nothing but hairy bushes and saggy tits, but it was naked chicks.

I remember heading out to Kemp Mill to see what new records were out. I would go to record and tape shows over in Alexandria because they had "imports" and hard to find (bootleg) recordings. When the first Tower Records went in, they had pretty much all the imports you could find at those shows. The bootlegs were never really that good, but it was different.

Waxie Maxies, Penguin Feather and eventually the used record and CD stores like the one that used to be in Fairfax were regular hang outs. Now, all that gas I sepnt on driving around town could buy 100 sings on iTunes.

I know there is a whole thread dedicated to this, but hanging out at Springfield Mall was a highlight of being a teenager in the 80's. It was far enough enough away, and without any FFX County Parkway to use, that going there was a special thing. I must have dumped thousands of dollars into the games at Time Out and Time Out 2 and had 100 Orange Julius'. I don't know how many throwing stars I bought at that place downstairs, but I know I lost every single one of them.

It sounds like there are a couple of Jaguars on the board today...Loehmann's Plaza was a cruising ground only for Falls Church High kids, with the occasional "drive by" by kids from Stuart who risked the body work on their or their parents' cars. I once saw a car full of Stuart kids stop in front of Giacomo's, only to have the trunk of their car beaten on with a tire iron...

Excellent thread, great memories! Hated the 80s at the time. I really thought I missed out on all the goodness they had in the 60s & 70s, but it really was a great time. I don't miss the emergence of AIDS nor of crack. Remember the original Night Flight on USA early cable? Outstanding programming for those very buzzed weekend late nights!
