Dairy Queen

I remember Dairy Queen from when I was a kid growing up here.
I used to patronize the one in Manassas in the 60s, and in the
70s there was one on 50 by Annandale Road in Falls Church.
(At least, I always thought these were DQs. Maybe it was some
similar sounding chain?)

I recently moved back to the area after several decades away,
and I thought I was lucky to have a Dairy Queen across the
street from me, in Falls Church on Route 7 out of Bailey's.
(The address is South Jefferson Street; where the GIANT is.)

But when I went in there I noticed that all the tables
in place (which were unoccupied, save one) were filthy.

Like a fool, I ordered a hamburger.

The counter man didn't ask me whether I wanted a salad, rings,
or fries, with my combo, even though I was ordering from the
big "You Choose" sign featuring those options. When I realized
that I hadn't specified, I tried continuously to get someone's
attention, but there seemed to be nobody else around, and he
was cooking. When he did come out, it was to hand me my food.
I tried to explain that the order was messed up, and that I didn't
order fries, and he didn't ask me, and I wanted rings, please.

Well, that didn't go over very well. He said onion rings
cost extra. (The sign says otherwise.) He didn't want to fix it.
He was rude. If I hadn't already paid, I would have walked out.

Unfortunately, I ate the hamburger. An hour later I am home
in the bathroom having diarrhea.

Yes, I'm an idiot.

But what I want to know is: Are all the DQ's nasty diseased filtholes
run by rude people who don't speak much English, and who try to rip you off?
Or just the one in Falls Church?

Disappointed.

Report them to DQ headquarters or file a health dept complaint. Inspections don't seem too bad though.

The one in the food court at Tysons always seems to be pretty busy with customers. I was tempted to get food there one day, and after about 10 seconds I thought to myself "What the fuck am I thinking?" and went someplace else. Based on your review I guess I'll have to live my life not knowing what their food is like. :))

I've never understood why someone would go to a place call "Dairy Queen" and order a hamburger. It's like going to Red Lobster or Don Pablos and ordering a hamburger.

DQ = Ice Cream only..

Leave burgers to Fuddruckers, 5 Guys, and Fosters...

That place on 50 near Annandale Rd was the legendary GW Frozen Custard! Man, do I have memories of standing in line there on hot summer nights in the 50's and 60's.

I can still see those 40's art deco Electro-Freeze machines that made the ice cream.

Man, that was some good shit!

I think the place survived into 70's or maybe '80s, but the land got so valuable that the brothers eventually sold out.

EJ works at DQ as a table attendant.

Eh, have you never ordered a chicken or fish sandwich at BURGER KING? Your reasoning implies otherwise. Not all DQ's are like what the OP described. They're certainly not gourmet, or Five Guys, but they do compare with Mconald's or Wendy's.

That place at Rt. 50 and Annandale Rd. was, as least by the 1960's, known as "Frozen Dairy Bar". It was owned by brothers, and they did not sell out, but rather were forced out so that a new strip mall (to replace the old strip mall behind it) could be built. They reopened for a brief period over on Lee Highway a little bit east of Jefferson District Park, and then apparently sold the business to a lifelong fan, who has moved the business into the strip mall that was built on the original site. (An IHOP sits about where the Frozen Dairy Bar structure was). That place never sold food other than frozen custard products, but the business now has something like a "Boardwalk Pizza" within the same retail space. The frozen custard is still pretty good...

The difference between Burger King and Dairy Queen is that the Burger King has a full kitchen with grills, fryers, etc, that makes meals (or a reasonable facsimile). Every Dairy Queen I have been to consists of one middle-aged Korean guy and maybe a microwave in the back. Do you REALLY think getting a burger at a DQ is such a good idea??

Okay, that's sounds about right. I wonder why the brothers didn't own the land after all their years there and the piles of money they must have made.

Anyway, I did a little googling and....Frozen Dairy Bar was originally opened by Guy & Walter Sponseller in 1950 under the name of G and W Frozen Custard.

I knew damned well there was a G W in there somewhere!

Interestingly, their younger brother Carl opened a frozen custard stand in 1947 in Fredericksburg that is still around and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Are you implying that the typical small DQ kitchen (the ones that serve sandwiches, etc.) is less clean than the typical large BK kitchen?

/pout, but i want ice cream AND a good burger.

So where does one get that in Denver? Oh wait, is that off-topic? ;-)

In Texas, they had Dairy Queen/Brazier places. Not only did they have all the DQ ice cream stuff, they had big burgers (I think one of them was called the "Beltbuster" or something like that). Lots of grease and meat. Yum!

They are inspected twice a year, and in the last one they
had 3 failures in the Critical category. (In the preceeding
inspection, they had 1 Critical and 4 non-critical, and in
the one before that, 3 Critical.) Not sure how that compares
with most establishments.

Sort of: I was living in Massachusetts, which does not
recognize the Second Ammendment like Virginia does.

The thing about soft-serve ice cream is that you have
to really be persnickety and clean the machines every
single day, or else things get nasty. I would have
thought of Dairy Queen as a good place to get ice cream,
but with my lovely experience at eating their other,
easier-to-handle food, I don't think I'm going to risk
a dairy product there.

I like Fuddruckers a lot, but I don't get what's so great
about Five Guys. I've tried them about six or seven times,
and, I dunno...it's an OK burger I guess. I wasn't thrilled
for some reason and I like the Fuddruckers burgers better.
They way people carry on, maybe my expectations were too high.

What is Fosters? And there's a couple other burger places
around here that I remember reading about in the paper in
the last few weeks. Are those good?

What about Hamburger Hamlet? I went to one once a million
years ago and don't really remember anything about it.

Hamburger Hamlet is in Crystal City -- they are a little overpriced in comparison to Fosters, Five Guys, and Fuddruckers.

Re; Hamburger Hamlet...

that place went way down hill. once an institution, it is now just a crap hole. dont go out of your way by any means to go to the Hamlet. Their only patrons are the naive families and visitors staying in one of the many local Crystal Shitty hotels that stumble in looking for something interesting.

Crystal City underground is a strange place filled with horrible restaurants. (king street blues, some bad mexican restaurant, hamlet). Not to mention the worst McDonalds in the history of McDonalds. The only decent place in the entire underground is Niramitra (thai) which is some of the best around (certainly rivals that rat hole "Thai Square" and the other, "Bangcock 54", off columbia pike near the cinema draft house).

For a good burger...5 guys. Also, Chili's has a good burger imo...

Is it true that rays puts bone marrow in the burgers?
