Why Are There No Sonic Restaurants In Fairfax County?
Posted by: Sean ()
Date: December 26, 2012 08:36AM

Living in Fairfax, I would need to drive over 40 miles to Winchester or Fredericksburg to get my Sonic fix. This is unacceptable! Please sign this petition at
http://www.change.org/petitions/sonic-open-restaurants-in-northern-virginia to help Sonic bring a restaurant to Fairfax County. Plus, if someone wants to build a franchise in Northern Virginia, I'm happy to support you!

Thank you,
Sean

The dirt's too expensive in FX County. Sonics are not small; big drive-in/through area.

Dwoaka is correct. The cost of the real estate prohibits places like Sonic, Sheetz and WaWa from being profitable.
I have been to one of the Sonic's in Fredericksburg a couple of times and was not impressed with the food quality. It is a great place for fatties to dine as you can sit in your car and they will bring you anything you want even if you just want napkins or ketchup. After you have finished your nasty footlong dog or greasy ass burger with a bucket of onion rings they will bring you a big old ice cream sundae. Only reason you might get out of the car is to go take a dump after eating all that shit.

Doubtful that many fatties who pig out at Sonic bother to get out of their car to take a dump.

According to the Sonic website, you need a site of around 2/3 of an acre to open up a "traditional" Sonic, which is just shy of 30,000 square feet, or a site that is about 150 x 200 feet.

Now, I'm not sure what the rent on 30,000 square feet in your run-of-the-mill shopping center in Fairfax County is, but I'll bet it's a pretty penny. I saw they're offering 1 acre between Bailey's Crossroads and fucking Culmore for $175K per year.

If you want to buy the land outright, there was a site offered up at the Burke Village Center that would have been about the right size. The price was $1M. I would imagine this is probably on the low end of what you'd expect to pay, because the location is kind of shitty.

You need to have at least a $1M net worth and liquidity of $1M to open 2 Sonics, which is the smallest number of stores they will let you open, and I think it'd probably cost you close the high end of their estimate of $710K - $3M.

"Fairfax County dirt" ain't that expensive.

I would bet that some kind of "no-compete agreement" has been reached between Sonic and unknown parties. Or somebody's got something on somebody or who knows?

One thing is sure, greed is by far the most powerful human trait. Like the guy said, "Follow the money".

Do you find that having NO CLUE makes your days go by more quickly? You can add "commercial real estate development" to the list of things about which you know nothing.

If I am not mistaken, they have some sort of very subjective and arbitrary method to determine which market areas get a Sonic. Even if they have a few eligible franchisees lined up for this area, they folks at corporate will not give a green like unless they feel like it.

Yes, I know their reasoning is illogical (okay, it's stupid), but I am hoping that they change their ways one day.

I learned about their method of franchising a few years back when I was still living in Los Angeles. There are no Sonics in L.A.; but, the closest one to that area is about 30 miles south east in Anaheim CA (near Disneyland). I know they can do very well in Los Angeles, but they don't think so or realize it.

I don't think it has to do with the price of "dirt." There are plenty of vacant spots with large under-used shopping center parking lots. Plenty of retail is being built around the area without major financial backing. The main reason probably is that TV advertising costs would be the same whether you have 1 or 20 restaurants in the area and nobody wants to commit to opening 10-20 restaurants in the area to get the economies of scale needed for TV advertising.

Sonic corporate handles TV advertising nation-wide. This area already has saturation of Sonic TV ads.

I can deal with driving to get to Sonic/Steak and Shake (both @ exit 126 on 95s- bear right and steak and shake is right there on the left and a mile down is Sonic)

...but can we bring back CHURCH'S Chicken? KFC has gone WAY downhill over the years, and Popeye's is just too bland/boring for me...even the spicy chicken really has no real spice to it. Bojangles has decent flavor, but it is usually undercooked every time I go (and with the lazy staff in the kitchen, I see why). Roy Rogers chicken is not that great either (WAYYYY too greasy!)

I know there's one @ Ft. Belvoir but I have no pass to get in or know anyone military....

Can I just get some decent fast-food chicken PLEASE?????

That is really the reason. Even though all the homeland security contracts after 9/11 drew a lot of low-class people into the area, this area is still way too upmarket for sonic or checkers.

If you want to live near a sonic or checkers, you'd need to move to PG County, or some really blue-collar area.

Springfield might have enough low-class, low-taste customers for a Checkers, or anyone down Rt 1.

See, this is exactly what is wrong and misguided about online petitions. Do you really think because you create an online petition to put a Sonic somewhere, it will magically cause someone to become a franchisee and set up a restaurant?

It's like those people that create online petitions to end homelessness or stop war, it reeks of naivete.

As you may know, Sonic attempts to replicate the 50's Drive-in experience. However, as you also may have noticed, NOVA fast food workers are 100% illegal hispanics.

Of course, like our competitors, we have absolutely no objection to exploiting illegal workers, but have you ever seen a beaner on roller skates? Our faux retro bullshit requires at least a few carhops on skates.

In other words, no skating beaners=NO Sonics in NOVA. Capiche?

Thanks to government broken immigration policy and importing bunch of retards that cannot put two English sentence together, NOVA infested by all low class foreigners. Those foreigners that think if they buy an Audi or BMW they are classy now. these Indian, Chinese, etc non-lovers of our beautiful America think American fast food is not healthy or good enough for them, in compare with the disgusting garbage they call it authentic. However, this country is good enough to pop bunch of children and keep them like wild animals inside, not teach them English and let them only watch Free To Air foreign satellite TV channels. so basically they do not even know what is a Sonic! Perhaps we should petition our stupid politician in congress and ask them to pass an IQ test first.

Gee I don't know why there not in NOVA but maybe?? My best guess Is.. Sonic serves "All American" customers and has no interest in opening in areas with numerous "Sponges Leeches and those too lazy to work" , Obamas pals, Democrats and Illegals who will slip and fall in the parking lot. So there in Fredericksburg and Hanover County , Va Beach and not Fairfax County. I of course could be wrong. But not about Obamas "Pals".

There Foot long Hot Dog with chili cheese and mustard is Great! Here that Kilton ? Foot long baby! Dig It.. Put that gun away now. Holstering and unholstering as you watch TV hoping some sucker will leap into your sights! Get in the car and drive down 95 to Sonic! For A great Dog!

"Sponges Leeches those too lazy to work" .. President Obama on the poor.

I think a lot of people simply think get land and build and building.

While this is the expensive portion of the effort the franchise evidently has a set of metrics that have to be met before allowing this to happen, additionally the need to have to expand the distribution region for delivery of product 1 restaurant is a very bog turn off.

if the very northern current sonic is Fredericksburg then to drive by 1 million people to get to lets say Lorton doesn't make much sense.

if the eastern most sonic is Winchester to drive by leesburg and ashburn to get to fair oaks doesn't make sense either.

you have to build a network for distribution that is cost effective

it will happen, but its not going to be some 1 store random popup in Tysons corner or something

Same reasons why we can't even get a Trader Joes to come out to northern Loudoun County. Too many svelte health-conscious rich folks on diets and exercise health regimes--they all have enough spending money to enjoy eating and shopping at Whole Foods and Wegmans type places for a bigger pile of individually personalized healthier food.

Not enough poor folk around with huge bloated stomachs who have to shop for their daily grease fill-up at a cheap Sonic restaurant. So, basically not enough business left over for Sonic to make things pay in Nova. They need to build where land is cheap, and there are lots of country and blue collar types with big hungry man appetites who can't afford to be eating grass fed beef and free range organic bison meat every night. It is all about demographics, baby!
