The best part about the photo of the trolley/train (whatever we call it) for the W&OD, is the advertisement on the back for a 1941 Chevy Pickup.

No pictures, just a few observations from growing up around here to keep a pretty sweet thread going.

Where I live now, near the GW Parkway/MtVernon, there are still quite a few folks that have lived in their houses since the early 70's and even late 60's. Mostly ex-military.

When I was growing up here in the mid 70's, the same time frame would have been people living in the same house since the late 20's and early 30's.

Of course, they would have lived in a farmhouse that had subsequently been surrounded by a subdivision in that instance, most likely. Not a neighborhood that has been around for about 50 years and is still popular today.

Pretty weird.

We used to dig for beer cans back then. If we found cans from the early 50's (Gunther, Old Georgetown/Senate) in good shape, that was a big deal. They were antiques.

Today, that would be like a kid finding a "new coke" can (as opposed to Coke Classic) from the mid 80's.

So, the crap that I grew up with, is an antique and something funny to a kid today.

Mt Vernon High and Ft Hunt were some of the better high schools around. Ft Hunt had a reputation (allegedly) as sending more kids to service academies than any other school in the country.

Today, Ft Hunt is no longer, and, well, Mt Vernon is Mt Vernon.

To go from Arlington to George Mason U in the late 70's was a looong trip down Route 50, as 66 hadn't opened yet inside the beltway.

A friend of ours growing up tells the story of, in the the late 70's, running late to a flight at Dulles, pulling up to the curb at the end of the terminal, parking his car, getting on the plane, returning two days later...and his car was still there.

Diplomats Soccer Games at WT Woodson High in the mid 70's.

Shirlington as a true shopping destination.

Annandale High winning the mythical football national championship in 78 with Mark Cox as QB.

Excellent aerial photo site!. Speaking of Putt Putt (and /or miniature golf) has anyone posted pictures of the putt putt course that used to be in Hybla Valley? It used to be close to where Thieves Market was.

And correct me if I remember incorrectly- The spot on Rt. 1 near the intersection with Sherwood Hall Ln that is now almost a Cosco, but was previously an abandoned Multiplex Cinema- Way back when I was very, very young- I remember that spot being a drive in theater screen, am I right?

Speaking of non-burger fast food, I noticed that the Arthur Treachers just north of Beacon Hill finally went bye-bye. That place was there forever (and so were all of the interior furnishings). I guess the last Treachers left is in Fairfax Circle.

Destroyed now. Just dirt lot.

There is still a Red Barn building in FFX City, next to Burger King and across from Embassy Car Wash and the Hampton Inn (formerly Shakey's).

Several shopping centers had those shingles on the front of their buildings, but this one looks like "Fairfax Blvd" in Fairfax City. In fact, I think it still hasn't had its look updated...

Facebook Thief, I am positive that shot is in Hybla Valley. There was a putt putt golf course in the middle of the parking lot. The CALDOR store occupies what was Thieves Market. That shopping center now has a Home Depot, and has been totally rehabbed so it doesn't look at all like that anymore.

There was a store in that shopping center called Atlantic Thrift. I recall it being a dept type store. I used to ride my bike down there, early to mid 70s, (from Va Hills) to play the pinball machines in there.

Then in the mid to late 70s a restaurant/arcade opened in that shopping center. Anyone remember The Electric Circus?

No, that looks like one of the "Spirit" boats. Despite the b&w pic, that's fairly recent. Much later than the Wilson Line and Marshall Hall.

The Streamliner and the 29 would have had the interior curved roof...Gordon...you got it....good job. Can you imagine walking into Denny's in Fairfax (that is in the same location) and finding these fine gents having a brew after finishing an egg/hashbrown and grits plate TODAY? I doubt it...maybe the area has changed a wee bit.

Indeed, the white building is the Fairfax Theatre, now a Toyota Dealer. Vincent also had a Hardware Store on that block which burned down about 1961. They rebuilt up the street on 123, the eight-sided building known as "Vincent's Octagon". Today that building is Fuddruckers.

Okay I found this on ebay, it says holiday inn alexandria virginia but I can not place it. This is surely not the holiday inn in old-town alexandria is it? They dont show the back of the card with the address on it.

Hey! This thread is a hoot! Its like the best thing I ever saw on the internet that was free! Many thanks to all y'all NOVA people. I bought my first cell phone at Luskins in like 1983 or so. Remember when the Luskins in Springfield was Dalmo? As I remember my cell phone was a bit larger than this one and I only had a 33% chance of getting a signal in the suburbs but it worked real good in DC. I got about an hour of talk time and maybe 6 hours of standby on a freshly charged battery.

I think this guy was/is across from the old Hostess/Wonder Bread outlet in Merrifield. I believe there used to be some kind of candy store there also.Last I remember there was a power equipment store there now.

The pic of Skyline Towers about 15 posts up is actually a picture after an accident that caused the tower to collapse and kill more than a dozen workers. I think it's talked about in the 'weird local incidents' thread.

The Tin Man is in front of Lee Hi Sheet Metal on 29 in Merrifield.

Dixie Sheet Metal has had a similar big tin cowboy for years, Gordon Rd in Falls Church city.

That Skyline Towers collapse was in 1972, I rode by there. One worker jumped from about the 8th floor and landed in something soft and lived he hit the edge of what ever it was and slideed down in a sense maybe a sand pile. The concrete forms were pulled to early. This building was rebuilt but not leveled, I wonder which one it was among them today?

I heard also a guy carrying a sheet of plywood was hit with a high wind and sailed off the building and died during it's construction.

Not sure if it was before or after the collapse.

It is the one closest to the intersection of rt 7 and South George Mason Drive. It is called Skyline Plaza North

the woods that used to be between I-95 and Rolling Road in Newington that are now 286 circa 2009 (i think)

I remember a hardware store called Fallfax something-or-other. I have a key to my parents' house that has that store's name on it. It was on Route 29 east of Jefferson District Golf Course but west of Hollywood Road/King David Memorial Gardens in the small strip mall on the north side of Route 29 where Frozen Dairy Bar temporarily relocated at one point.

According to old records...Fallfax Lumberteria 8411 Arlington Boulevard.

Antifreeze was used in the concrete to prevent freezing which made mixture weak and the forms pulled to early.
And Wingnut is right too. One constuction worker wasn't able to attain lift with 3/4 plywood and bought the farm.
A friend from High School was one of the fatalities. I was not in the country but did a little sniffing around later to see who was responsible.

Anyone have pictures of the little strip mall that was demolished and replaced that Alto Plaza, the crown jewel of Centerville.

I think one of the shops used to be a toy store.

Maybe they just changed the addresses on Richmond highway...

In the 80's it was Signet bank, Churches Chicken, Ground Round, Krispy Kreme. Accross the street was Builders Square and Chuck E Cheeses.

That's the one I remember. Growing up our neighbor use to work there. Actually the strip mall is where the Fallfax building use to be. I am not sure if they had other locations as Sleepy's info would show.

CORRECTION-Fallfax Lumberteria 7634 Arlington Boulevard....which is now up from Loehmann's Plaza near Jaguar Trail...address # may have changed at some point....this was from the 50's/early 60's.

That's an aerial shot of the then new Unitarian Church on Hunter Mill Rd. I used to play at that construction site when I was a boy.

Hey Sleepy, just curious, where did you find this info?
I just checked out the Historic Aerials and don't really see anything there.
I know a lot of the street numbers changed back then.
Our house on Annandale Road changed numbers in the early 60's I think.

I just noticed that 7634 Lee Highway is the strip center where the Fallfax was that I remember.

Indeed the stripmall with El Tio at 7634 Lee Hwy was the site of Fallfax Lumberteria. The building was up front and the lumberyard in back. Dad (RIP) used to take us there on Saturday's when he was doing home improvements in the early '60's. I remember wandering among the stacks and loved the smell of the fresh-cut lumber. Now the site of the "lumberyard" is a printing plant filled with paper...ironically. The parking lot is actually named "Fallfax Drive".
Hechinger's wiped out the independent hardware and lumberyards...then Hechinger's got wiped out by Home Depot.

Not sure if this has been posted before or not.

Since its the 4th of July- anybody remember when Fairfax County had fireworks displays in multiple parks around the county? I grew up near Lee District Park and there was 4th of July fireworks there for many years. Cars would be curb parked on Rose Hill Drive from Telegraph nearly all the way to the shopping center. It was easier just to walk there and back- a long walk about 2 miles but probably took less time to get home than trying to get a car out of the traffic snarl that ensued when the fireworks were over. Somebody said the county stopped because the park has artificial turf now. AFAIK Lake Fairfax is the only place that has fireworks now.

The "city fathers" needed to change a lot of addresses/road names in the early 60s when things were becoming less rural. The fire department, etc. needed to be able to find your home when there was a problem. Our street got to keep its name since it was the oldest in the county with the name but our house number changed at that time. Right after Mom had taught me where I lived...

Also sometimes the business such as Fallfax, Annandale Millwork, Cambell and Farrar, etc. need to move into areas where their services are needed, i.e. where construction is going on.

I think the changing of addresses coincided with the opening of the beltway. The center of the "bullseye" starts at 100, and works its way out.

For example, Leesburg Pike in Tysons just oustide the beltway is the 8000 block...River Road in Potomac Md just outside the beltway is...the 8000 block.

I believe prior to that, addresses were somewhat more haphazard.

I don't remember the year but I do recall seeing on the Lee District sign that the fireworks were cancelled due to the budget. The money budgeted for the fireworks was probably used for the artificial turf....LOL.

As a kid growing up in orange hunt I still clearly remember my dad bringing home this car from Dave Pyles. Years later my dad gave it to me. It was NOT a cool car but hey, when you are 16 years old any car is better than no car. No hot chicks would go on a date with a guy driving a 74 montego wagon. Thats okay though some less than hot but really nice chicks rode in it with me. You gotta love the classy cranberry paint with the peel and stick woodgrain simulated panels.

Negative. Builder's Square was up the hill at Beacon Mall, in the space that was originally a Woolco. Later subdivided into Marshall's, Levitz Furniture, and Channel Hardware (later Builder's Square). The space across the street was always a K-mart, along with the aforementioned Chuck E. Cheese, and on the left end some county health department offices.

Brian has it right. As shown in the article below, Builder's Square opened in 1988 at 6303 Richmond Highway, which checks out as the spot next to Chuck E Cheese. Builder's Square was a subsidiary of K-Mart, so it makes sense that it went into the old K-Mart space. Channel Hardware was a separate store located where Stinky Pete describes, which operated simultaneously with Builder's Square until it closed in 1991 as part of Channel's bankruptcy reorganization. The Alexandria Builder's Square closed in 1995, a couple of years before the entire BS chain merged into Hechinger's.

Well, what was clear space and looked like a treeless village in the 50s has turned into trees in 2013.

looks like Annandale Road to me. About where it makes the turn before going to Rt. 50.

I remember the drivers ed cars at Edison being 70s vintage Mercury Montego sedans. If you can drive a Montego with a football field length hood- you can drive anything! These kids nowadays- think they can drive in those rinkey dink Ford Escorts, try parallel parking a Montego!

I was rollin' in the Vista Cruiser about the same time. lol

Off Rt 50 around Annandale Road maybe. I can just imagine GI's back from Korea WWII vets , settleing down, raising a family getting one of these Cape Cod's with a yard, Being able to come home and relax and have a family Bar-B-Que.
