The Ranch House was across the street from JP Manhattan's(in the eight sided building) which later became Fuddruckers

It is on a section where 29 and 50 run together, so that may have been called Lee Highway (like the rest of 29) at the time.

In Warrenton, in the pic of Gold Cup Grill. The original bypass built way back to take travelers to the Blue Ridge and beyond with out going thru the town. In fact when I passed thru Warrenton on the way to Clark Bros on 29, Flying Circus on 17 and Va Tech down 29 to 64 to 81 in the 70's I never knew the town existed other then the by-pass

The current bypass on 29 was opened about 20 years ago maybe more and cut off 15-20 minutes and a few miles on a 29 trip

Went thru Warrenton a month ago and no Frost Diner seen maybe I missed it as well the ice cream place on the "by-pass"

The gas station on the by-pass at Rt 17 north was a huge place for free weekend Bluegrass and many big name bands played there including Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs to crowds that came from near and far

I wonder if they were calling 50 Lee Hwy? Still, the building was/is on 123 aka Chain Bridge Road. Unless the property the building sits on went all the way to Lee Hwy (29/50) at that time. Before Exxon?

the "second" bypass at Warrenton was cut through in the late 80's/early 90's.

So, originally, you'd be heading down 29, and, just as you get to that big gas station on the right, you'd make a hard left through Old Town Warrenton...

Sometime in the 50's, a "bypass" was made around Warrenton, whereby, instead of making that hard left mentioned above, you go straight...and, through time, all types of businesses and hotels sprung, including the Rip Van Winkle Hotel, on the right, as you are headed south.

Then, you could take a hard right on 211 out to Sperryville, or, continue straight on 29 business and rejoin 29, just north of the current Clark Bros location.

However, this "bypass" became obsolete with all the businesses that sprung up on it, so, the newer bypass was built.

As you are headed south on 29. the "new" bypass is on the left, the old bypass is to the right, and the original 29 is between the 2.

And I missed the Rip Van Winkle in Warrenton, gone too

The original Clark Bros family came to Warrenton from the north in the 40's they had a farm of several thousand acers. One brother played music in the 50's one got into hunting rifles and opened a small shop at the farm , sometime in the late 50's they bought the house and land on Rt and became partners at their Clark Bros gun shop, One of the brothers was killed in 1970 at the store in accident, the other died in the early oughts 2003 or so. Their names were Jim and John I can keep them straight. Mitch worked for them starting in 1964 and he retired early last year as the long time general manager. Over 53 years there !

The hey day for Clark Bros came in the early 70's about 1973 when NOVA established 3 day waits for handguns, so people went to Clark Bros and they were the gold rush days for them. After Va changed the laws so only the General Assembly can pass gun laws they have slowed down . President Trumps election also has slowed business down. Obama was the worlds greatest gun salesman on the planet during his 8 lol and business boomed at times during his terms

A "route" is not a road, and a route is not asphalt.
It is certain stretches of one or more roads.
A "route" is some directions (usually given by signs) that you can follow.

It is common for there to be many routes all running
over the same stretches of roads; the routes usually
divide up and go onto different roads at some point.

Your address is "Lee Highway" or something.
That is the name of a road.

Maybe you are confused because someone told you that a place
you wanted to go was "On Route 236" or something like that.
In reality, that place is not on Route 236.
It is on some actual road, such as Little River Turnpike,
Main Street, Fairfax Boulevard, Duke Street, etc.
Did you never notice that Route 236 turns onto a totally different
road when it gets to Kamp Washington, swapping with Route 50?
If you keep going straight on the road, you are all the sudden
on Route 50 (and also some other routes), no longer on Route 236.

Are you nine?

211 (i.e. the road "to" Route 11) became obsolete if you were trying to get over the Blue Ridge and can now use 66 out to 81.

I haven't eaten at the Frost Diner in ages but its still there right before the turn to 211. Will try it again if I'm in the area at mealtime.

It looked busy at Clark Brothers when we went by from taking Blanche Jr. to Tech recently.

I was finally able to eat at Spitony's -- horrible name -- but good sandwiches, have wanted to try it but was never in the area when it was mealtime or I was coming back from some function that had a meal...

And only today did I learn that RT 211 now ends in Warrenton. That happened in 1980, and I never picked up on it. It was 29/211 for so much of my life that it is just burned into my brain that way.

RT 211 cuts across the mountains to New Market and continues deep into some of the best farmland on the planet Earth.

There is a date code on the back side of postcards. If you go by the 3 digit phone number alone, I put a mid to late 1930's date on that card.

"That" card could very well be late 30's, but as I said linen postcards were used until the mid 50's...also areas also used 3 digit phone numbers (especially rural) until the 50's also.

The 3 digit phone number in Fairfax was most likely a party line. Most area of Northern Virgina had 6 digit numbers Example CR- 1111

By the early 1950's another number was added because of the population growth in this area Example CR3 - 1111

One of our oldest exchanges Example 273-1111

Living in Arlington in the 70s-80s, Rts 29 and 211 were always used together. Someone would say “Take 29/211 south”

I use to think those routes ran together forever until I moved out of Arlington and probably asked someone.

Ok, who remembers the local exchanges like above with the 273 example? Those first three digits were exchanges and tied to where you lived/where your business was. A few I remember well, please add more;

971 = Springfield, specifically Springfield Mall area. Most mall stores had 971-xxxx numbers

569, 455 = West Springfield

644 = West Springfield and often Orange Hunt area

437, 435, 471 = Herndon

250 = early Burke Center

281, 255 - Vienna

You're allowed to ask questions, and isn't it nice that
people might donate their precious time to help you out,

That doesn't change the fact that you are in your 20s
but possess less knowledge about the world than a nine year old.

Here's a piece of advice: Quit acting like an asshole,
be happy that people will help you, and maybe you'll learn something.

Well, on second thought, it's obvious that won't happen.
It is too late for you.

Kill Yourself.

You know that's the path you're on, and how it must end.
Better to do it now, and suffer less.
The world will be better without you.
You'll be doing yourself and everyone else a favor.

Do it now.

I have always loved that old neon sign at the Rip Van Winkle in Warrenton. Here are a few more views.

Thanks for those images Old Iron! I might slide out to Warrenton soon and spend a night in the RVW.

Wow, you make a lot of assumptions "Poiter". And you cannot spell. Oh well. Your "precious time" would be better spent doing something other than spending it on FFXU. I come here for fun, not to better society. Prick.

The Westwood Motel was still standing in the late 1970s -- this picture is from about 1978, looking up from Lee Highway. Eventually it was torn down and I think a Hardee's was built in its place.

So, is that Springfield Car Care? With the bays facing Keene Mill? Can't recognize it without the backup for I-95.

Thanks.

There are companies that do the complete restoration of old neon signs. That sign can be restored, and would be worth a nice amount of money.

Not sure but I think that place is on Backlick road between Bradlick shopping center and Annandale. Some Asian guy had a shop there for years, he only worked on Hondas and Toyotas.

The story I heard was that the town of Warrenton made the RVW shut down those neon lights in the 70s. I lived out there in the 80s with my first ex-wife for a couple years. You can see old Rip lit up in this 1969 postcard!

Service Neon was a FXCO business that did just that and made/repaired the neon signs, I once considered getting into that as a sideline

The company may still be around, dont know if neon signs have been outlawed or different gas is used today

It looks like they do a very good business with Great American Restaurants. Signs for Mike's, Ozzie's, and Coastal Flats are all prominent in the banner ad.

You have to be a really old Fairfax county boy to remember Blevinstown, Virginia. Actually according to Wiki it still exists.

This is the old Blevins store on Braddock road. Albert and Oceil H Blevins, proprietors.

Wikipedia uses the present tense for "an unincorporated community" if the name appears on a map somewhere. There are a couple places local to me that show up that way even though no one has used the name in close to a century.

Now Popeye's? The only Popeye's I can think of in Reston is the former Roy Rogers. To me this looks more like what is now the Ariake Japanese place at Glade & Colt's Neck; it used to be a McDonald's at one point. Still a great shot!
