The S&W cafeteria to the left was my first official show up here at this time and get a regular paycheck job. Was for a lot of other 15-16 year old kids in the area. $1.35/hour, no tips. Cleared a chill $35/week. Plus all you could eat before the shift and the food was surprisingly good.

Best job in the place was rolling silverware in cloth napkins but two old black women who had been there forever had a lock on that. Sat on stools next to each other and were like some kind of super-human machine continually cranking it out. Funny as hell too. All of life and love advice you wanted whether you wanted it wanted it or not. lol

We went to Seven Corners also. It was near Chez Blanche part 1.

When I was at TJ, the Inn of the Eight Immortals in the freestanding building in back of 7 Corners was popular since they were a bit casual about carding the kids -- the age for beer and wine was 18 then. If you had a particularly doltish waiter, you could get mixed drinks.

My mom for some reason preferred Shirlington to 7 Corners and Landmark. She also liked the bargain basement at the Hecht Company at Parkington.

Culpeper was once known as Fairfax, and Fairfax was known as Providence.

It is all in the history books that we had in the schools years ago, but today we teach our children that the history of this nation is racist, and that the monuments to the creators of this Republic must be taken down.

Wrong.

Do a bit of research, and you will see that you a sadly misinformed.

Washington, Jefferson, Jackson and the list goes on.

Let's all take time out for a flashback to page 12. Even though this pic is only about 13 years old It reminds me of a different time. Back then you could not say "Alexa! order me more socks and underwear!" , noooo, you had to get in the car and park at the mall and walk into JcPenny or Sears and pick out and buy your socks and underwear! Heck, you might even meet a friend at the mall and go for a orange julius together you had to interact with actual people! How did we survive this??

Time-out upstairs by JCP had always been Time-out.

I remember Taco Laredo put a ad in my school newspaper with a buy one, get one free regular hard taco deal. We rounded up like 50 of those coupons and wore that place out on free tacos! The next ad they put out was buy one - get 50% off another one.

Was Buckaroo steak ranch the name of the steakhouse in Ravensworth shopping center Springfield? I know there was a steakhouse there for years but I can't recall the name. It was very popular with the Sears employees that worked out of the Sears service center on Port Royal road. These vans were always parked there at lunchtime and in the late afternoons as beer was sold by the pitcher.

That picture of the T-Bone reminds of that guy that used to post a great deal, many times describing his home-cooked meals-DAJAX, was it?

Yep, I remember that Buckaroo in like 1972 at Ravensworth-was it on the side that now has Kilroy's?

Anybody remember beer can collecting back in the 70's, and going out to old farms in Chantilly and around to dig for old conetops, Old Georgetown Cans, National Bohemian, Gunther, and Black Label?

It seems like every kid had a collection in his basement in 1975-1978.

No, it was called the Alamo steakhouse. They served both kinds of beer on tap. Light beer AND Dark beer! That was back when driving drunk was basically legal.

You can see it was a gas station in the beginning. Look at the right side of the structure. The old concrete pads for the tourist cabins can be seen on the right.

The left side of the structure is an addition added years later.

McLean 1965. I think the story was that 123 had to be widened and the guy who owned the house wanted to stay so he cut a third of his house off to make way for the highway. The house structure failed and the place got condemned by the county.

Great pic of the 29/211 & 50 intersection. Goldie's Ice Cream can be seen on the left side of the photo. Drug Fair can be seen in the background, and there is a Volkswagen Bug.

Can anyone make out what the cross street is? I took the photo to 400%, but I can't make it out.

Who was Sam Bass? He put his name on the house 3 times, and what is up with the triangle next to his name?

That’s a winner. The picture and the owner who chopped off half his house. I love it!

Reverse image search indicates Beverly drive was the cross street.

No memory of it in BC, but it was a chain out of Chicago and supposedly they had VA locations...I don't remember any building like that though. This is a pic of a typical GP that is in Hampton VA...now something else...a Barbershop

I recall it was "Gulf Reston" that was the big investor in the late 1960's thru the late 1970's. All of the gas stations in Reston were Gulf stations.

Nice picture of a Chevelle and what looks to be an old TR.

I am pretty sure it was a tourist camp at one time. In 1980 or 81 I went there with my girlfriend to visit a friend of hers who was a welfare mom and the county was putting her up in one of those little white cottages off to the side. The place was pretty run down at that time.

The Golden Point was on the site that became LUMS. More or less across Columbia Pike from the old Giffords.

In the 1990 photo...was it a swimming pool place?

All the blue looking things in the upper left, look like swimming pools

You just jogged my memory, there was a place there for a few years that sold big ass backyard spas. They were not as big as a above ground pool but much bigger than a hot tub.

It was actually a fiberglass pool company for a while. They sold the drop in pools. If you look at the picture, you can see where one had been removed and it was just the sand outline.

Looks like it was a nursery in the 70's and Motor Lodge before that. That old building has had a lot of lives..

I don't think this area is a strong market for in ground pools. I know very few people that have them because there are just too many public or swim club pools to use.

The house behind the condemned one is still there.

Thanks dude. I love this thread, and I appreciate all you’ve done for it. Fairfax native here, but deployed abroad (non military), every time I come home the changes are massive!

Most lots are way too small for them.
In neighborhoods with bigger lots, many have pools.

It depends. In-ground pools are expensive to build and maintain, the latter to include the significant extra costs of insurance. Pools here are often kind of a bad idea economically, but some who have come to NoVa from "endless summer" type climates do seem to take a backyard pool as an article of faith.

The other issue with in ground pools is that this area is highly transient, and the investment in a swimming pool rarely increases the value of the home.

Better to spend the money on bigger and more modern kitchens and bathrooms that home buyers seek.

This is not the Golden Point restaurant in Bailey's Crossroads. This building is the old Village Inn Pizza restaurant. There is a similar building, which was also a Village Inn in Springfield. The Golden Point restaurant was about where the Karen Radley Acura is now.

This building looks similar to Rocco's in Springfield?
