Far left appears to be a 1967 Ford Falcon station wagon, car #2 is a 1973 Pontiac LeMans, car #3 is a 1971/72 Ford Maverick and car #4 is a 1972/73 Opel Manta.

Far right is an Opel Manta, 2nd from right could be an Oldsmobile Omega.

Is this the house that is on the right hand side of Pickett heading north from 236 towards old Pickett and Route 50?

Second that motion!

This is the earliest pic of FFX Circle I have seen - no HoJo's, no Old Pickett Rd, No Army/Navy CC. Rt 50 West was a damn forest!

I thought for a second the house straight across from Blake Lane was the old gypsum business, but I recall that being closer to Lee Hwy.

Any additional 1950s pics would be appreciated from all posters.

I see the Howard Johnson's at the top of the circle, but the Arthur Treacher's would take another 2 decades before it was built.

You are correct - I was looking at it upside down. Makes more sense. What I thought was Blake Lane is actually Old Pickett.

We discussed this question last September, and this Burger King is not in Fairfax City. Look at the second picture, and you will see the sign positions are different, and the mounting beams as well.

The Red Barn is also a big clue.

As I recall, all you could do from Blake Lane at Rte 29, was turn right and head into the Circle. Follow onto Old Lee Highway and then the left turn past Hechingers to jog over to Pickett Road.

True there was no road where Blake punches through to Pickett, but straight across from the gas station used to be a gypsum business with a gravel parking lot. There were lots of work trucks going in and out of that location in the 1970s. Its now an office park, built sometime in the 1980s.

Too bad that the Fare Face author couldn't have spoken to
Gerry Gibson.
He was the son of Frank Gibson whose house is in several of the pictures.
He built a Sears house next to his father's house on Lee Highway.
He was a very early metal detector who searched Civil war battlefields before metal detectors were prohibited.
Also a gunsmith of vast experience with a letter from Eisenhower whose lever action Winchester he polished internally for smoother action.
His basement shop had bluing tanks next to a window and several machine tools.
He lived in the same house which was next to
,dare I say it,. Arthur Treachers,.
Many lazy afternoons spent listening to his stories of old Fairfax while he puffed on his seemingly everpresent cigar.
He lived until he was 99 and I saw his passing as the last link to what Fairfax was.
Greedy developers with their bought and paid for politicians have ruined that life .
I'm glad that I got the chance to live a little bit of that former Fairfax and I'm glad that I don't have to look at what it's become.

So you got called out for taking photos from others. Now you still take photos from others and post them here with the "xxxx xxxxxx shared this photo". Are you explicitly asking these people if you can repost their photos and put their names on FFXU? Maybe they do not want their name associated with this site.

The gas station on the NE corner of Park St and 123 in Vienna has of course been vacant for some years now. There was a yellow "public hearing" sort of sign there the other day when I drove by, so maybe something's up. The Vienna Theater of course became a successful bike place, thanks in part to the nearby W&OD Trail.

For that property to be vacant for all these years suggests there is something seriously wrong with it. If not, someone would have bought it by now. I bet the fuel tanks leaked and it would cost a fortune to excavate all the soil and dispose of it.

“vacant” may have been too strong a word. The rain canopy and pumps are still there as I think is what were the old air hoses and car-vac facilities. The Shell station that had been on the NE corner is completely vanished, but I don’t know what the fate of the old BP place will be. It’s been maybe ten years since the last customer pulled away.

Good lord...do people really give a hoot about reposting their pictures?

I thought once something was put out on the internet, it belongs to everybody.

We're not talking Ansel Adams here, we're talking a weird hobby where people like to look at old photos of Fairfax Co, and share them.

What is the big deal?

Are people worried they won't make money off of them?

Seriously, what is it?

Thank you for your story. I’ve heard some of that but not from anyone who really knew him. Fairfax now is a far cry from Fairfax then, that’s for sure.

First time I ever met a Redskin was Brig Owens in the early 70’s. Loved the Redskins back then. He was signing photos at the National Bank of Fairfax. I think the bank shut down a few weeks later.

I suspect National Bank of Fairfax wasn't shut down, but instead was taken over. The sixties through early eighties saw a number of local banks combined into statewide giants such as Virginia National, United Virginia and First Virginia. A few years later they were merging into regional banks.

The National Bank of Fairfax merged into another bank and they merged until today its Bank of America for those who have been along for the ride over 40 years.

F&M Bank

Sovern Bank affectionately called Soviet Iranian Bank

There may have been one more then it became Bank of America and these two may not be in order

There were a few branch's of The National Bank of Fairfax The main branch across from Fairfax Courthouse which was a old tavern on Rt 236 Main St.

Next To The Merrifield Jack in The Box at Merrifield later Taco Bell

Fairfax Rt 50 by Jim Mackay Chevrolet

Pickett Shopping Center

The rest are fuzzy, sorry

Nations Bank was one of the mergers prior to Bank of America.

Reid store on Rt 123 down by Lorton Prison. It was just past Silverbrook, on the same side of the road on the long curve , there's a stand of trees that were there and still are. I remember some hot days in the summer in the 70's getting a soda there . The place closed about 1974 or . It was one of Fairfax County's old time country stores that were around then

That's the one I was missing, The NBOF became Sovran just about the time the Iranians took the US hostages from the embassy in Tehran , hence the nickname

So It was NBOF Then Sovran then F&M Then Nations then BOA. I'm too lazy to open the old box of checks.

F&M was before Sovran. Sovran was formed from the merger of Virginia National Bank and F&M. That was when lots of banks were going through interstate mergers and went through a phase of making up odd names that sounded like they meant something but didn't. VNB merged with F&M and became Sovran. United Virginia Bank merged and became Crestar. Bank of Virginia merged and became Signet.

Loved Reid store.
Always stopped there on the way to Occoquan.
Early 70s.
Even then it seemed like going back in time.

Deregulation is often sold as a way to encourage competition, but what it actually encourages is concentration, such as the wave of bank mergers of 30 years or so ago.

The National Bank of Fairfax was taken over by Sovran Bank in the mid 1980's. It changed names several times before it became BOA.

My dad knew one of the managers at The National Bank of Fairfax, and he went there to talk to him, when my family bought a new Ford at Texas Ted Britt.

I would say late 40's/early 50's by the ads and the neon sign.

I couldn't tell if it was an A/C unit or a fan.

Maybe where Rexall and Magruders were later?
Or at the corner in the middle of town also a pharmacy in the 60s 70s that I remember.

Looks like one of those window A/C units made with good old American Steel

My understanding is that building sat on the corner of Maple and Center, where a vacant medical building now stands.

The pharmacy you're thinking of in the 60s and 70s (and even 80s) was Hawthornes. It was the successor pharmacy to the one in the photo, but by the 60s had moved into the building where Starbucks is now.

No. Copyright still applies. Hard to enforce, perhaps, but still applies.

Think about it: if what you're suggesting were to hold, then ads broadcast over the air would be equally un-copyrighted, eh?
