Looks like an old Volvo 122 circa 1965, and the pic was taken about 1970.

There's been a bit of talk of places in Vienna lately. I thought that some here might be interested in this.

The one near Melpar was the Falls Church one listed...Loehmann's Plaza.

Yes, it was a Loehmann's Plaza. I ate there many times years ago. I wouldn't mind a visit again, especially at the prices shown on the old menus.

That's the place. I generally went to the location in Fairfax City next to Pasquale's.

I wouldn't feed the shit they serve to a stray dog. Fuck the Vienna Inn. Place should have been shut down 30 years ago.

Back when drinking and driving was pretty much legal I used to go there with some friends and have like 10 beers and 2 chili-dogs or a chili-mac and then drive home. I sure am glad I never killed anyone doing stupid stuff like that. We had some good times in that place. Maybe I'll go back and have a few too many but Uber home this time.

I stopped in a few years back after a 15 year absence. They have changed the chili, and the hot dogs they use.

The Vienna Inn Taste has been lost.

At Times, they kept them in a pan of hot water somewhere under the bar.

Was in there a couple years back, a bit fixed up from 40 some back but still the inn in ways it looked but there was only 1 "Vienna type" in there

No fun, too sterile. No Abraham RIP, No wild wise ass women, no loud drunks, Vienna types, bullshitters, sports fans, laughs, old government workers, or packed place like it was 20-40 + back

Of course it was about 4 pm they may be showing up later these days instead of
noon

And my bill was 7 some not 1.25

The Vienna Inn

That building caught fire around 1974 or 1975 - I think it was called The Barn. After the fire the building lost half of it's second story. That is why it has an odd shape.

The barn was in the center of the block only partially seen in the picture. Thanks for the info shared.

The building of question in the picture is on the corner. It looks like it use to be a gas station but there are no pumps and there’s an umbrella table. Just thought someone might recollect.

Looking at the aerials for 1972, I was struck by the amount of land remaining undeveloped. Although ’72 doesn’t seem very long ago to me, I guess it was.

What an old dusty/rusty redneck town the city must have been back then. I can only imagine, see'ns I’m from Arlington where the lights were.

Causeican, This is a picture of the building on the corner of Old Lee & North St. – this picture was taken in the late 1980s. You can see the white kiosk is also in your 1972 aerial. I guess at some point between the two pictures, they added landscaping to the building’s front, instead of parking.

I think the upper story was painted red, like the Barn.

I believe this was an new car dealer and auto repair facility until WWII. I can't place the make they sold. My GP took photos of Fairfax City back in the early 1920's thru the 1950's before he retired to Arizona in 1959.

I saw the pictures back 20 years ago, and my Aunt has them in Nebraska. Maybe she can see if there are photos of anything interesting in this area.

omg! Too good to be true. I believe it was a Chevrolet dealer. “They always had a new car in the window” is what I heard.

The story I heard was Allen Williams and Mable Sisson were joint owners (maybe); or just Allen Williams was the Owner. One of the censuses shows A. Williams as a mechanic and Mable as “bookkeeper for garage”.

Allen lived down 236 close to where NOVA is now.

The Williams’ family home was the house off Cedar; at the end of McLean; across Cedar on the right. The old white house with what looks like a little cemetery with picket fenced. It just sold last summer.

Mable Sisson was married to one of the Williams boys and I think lived in the Williams’ family house at one point (from the census)

The small building facing Main and attached to the “Service Garage” was a US Post Office. I also heard the house next door, was Mable Sisson’s mother’s house?

I remember that being a garage or some type of auto establishment in the late 70s/very early 80s. The bay window in the front was larger/more glass than current. I do recall a car being in that window, but can't place make or model. I think the outside of the entire building was white.

It was actually posted on Oct.23 2017 and it is the building next to Crescent TV on the far right of the photo.

There have also been photos of this building from the early 1950's when it was a restaurant.

Looks like a Dodge Dart GT Convertible. Could you imagine the outrage today of driving 14 people in a car like that, a vehicle designed for 5?

Just fine, because our parent's gave a shit, w/ boundaries. They also had common sense...not being a f-n helicopter thinking that would cover all.

With kids involved and an adult driver an AMC Pacer with bench seats could fit 8. Everybody did not have a seat belt, but they were not mandatory then anyways!

I last passed thru 29-211 / Braddock intersection in 1975 before we moved to Seattle--I was 11 at the time. I remember this like yesterday.

To see that school bus and the damage there. So lucky it was a Sunday and only a few people were in the school and no one was hurt. I was in that People's once before and they had a lunch counter in it

Thanks to Kenny Pitts for these pictures.

This brings up a question. I always thought that American gas stations re-branded as Amoco sometime in the 70s but you can see that Kenny's Amoco from the 50s turned into Kennys American in later years. Did they start out as Amoco then change to American and then change back to Amoco in later years?
Also note that Kennys and Maple leaf trailer park had the same phone number so maybe Kenny owned both places or it was a party line.

In photo #1 you can see the there is a Sinclair gas station on the opposite side of the street. It later would become Dick Keller Auto Sales.

I tried to get an answer about the Amoco/American gas station question, but that issue is difficult to explain. Many mergers.

Old Iron is correct...Roughly speaking:
1950's branded Amoco in Southeast (inc VA)
1961 went to American in the East...Standard in Midwest
1971 back to Amoco for everyone.

I took the photo to 400% and was not able to spot any VWs, but the is a 1957 Chevy Station Wagon in the parking lot.

Actually, Sleepy may not be correct about that. Further investigation has revealed VWs in numerous old pictures from the 50s and 60s. Here are some right here:

I think that car in front of the VW Bug is a VW Rabbit, so that pic is from the mid 1970's

Spotter, That is a Rabbit...good eye-small pic, the car behind is a 67/68 Pontiac. I even agree a VW in the 70's was de rigueur.

WOW !! The Lance Motel @ 236 / 395. Remember it well. I think the rooms were around $ 23.00 a night 1975ish. What a dump, but perfect for a high school keg party. Good times, thanks for sharing.

Notice on the first Ford Motor court postcard that Television antennas are prominently displayed on the roofs of the cabins. I am pretty sure that was a big thing back then as many Americans from rural areas had no access to a television signal at their homes. Watching TV at a motel while on vacation was a rare treat!
