I'm positive about 20 years ago I heard on the radio that Captain 20 had passed away. I used the link provided and see there were 3 other Captain 20's. Must have been one of those 3 that croaked.

At Layton Hall, the home of the Willard family, the rows to which you point are of well developed boxwood trees.

A few might still be on the grounds of the old Belle Willard school on Layton Hall Drive.

Steve Hershey, who maintains a Facebook page devoted to Fairfax City, might be able to tell you more.

I like it! And I saw a few local bands there. Would you mind if I reposted it on the Falls Church facebook page?

Cool school bus pictures. I looked up the West River in Sudley, Maryland and saw that it's out by the Chesapeake Bay. If that is the location of the photo, I wonder how long it took to drive there on the roads of the day, (or lack thereof). No Beltway, so they had to cross the Potomac into DC, and go from there I guess.
And thanks for the Bratwursthaus matchbook. I still don't really remember the place being there. But then again, I do remember seeing a line of people a few times along the front of what must have been the place. Interesting that I don't remember it, because I used to go to the Kemp Mill Records along the same strip.

Thanks for the postcard photos. And good size too. These old eyes like to be able to see things.
Back then, we didn't use National, so I didn't know that place existed. Our extremely few flights were always international, so that meant Dulles, (or Do Less as I still call it). All our lengthy national trips were in the old Dodge Station Wagon. Cheaper than a bunch of plane tickets.

Two wrecked cars in the front yard of a house on Westmoreland St. in the Falls Church area.
The mangled upside-down car looks like it used to be a 1952 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, and the other looks like the rear end of a 1949 or 1950 Packard.

I was wondering the same thing. Oldsmobile had recently come out with their new-fangled OHV V8, and the Packard had the old tried and true Straight 8.
With the tire technology of the day, and if you look at the road itself, I don't know if you would really consider it a paved road, I can easily see an accident happening.
I know that section of the road well, I drove it every day for years. It's an old road, it's been in use for well over 100 years.

Whatever Volkswagen joke has been going on, I've played a little where I could keep it connected with this thread, (mostly).
But thanks for the Lee Volkswagen sticker. My Father bought our old Camper from them in the late '60's. I still remember riding home with him in from the dealership, brand new. (And I got to ride in the FRONT SEAT! LOL).

Changing the subject... a 1940 census refers to the subjects living on “Road 610”. It states they reside in “Lee Magisterial District, Fairfax”. Does anyone know what the name of Road 610 is today?

Don't worry, I don't mind at all. LOL

It's been a few years since I've been in that part of the county, and I don't think that I want to see what it looks like now.
I want to remember what it used to be like, almost countryside.
When I was growing up, the old man that lived across the street from me, grew up in Burke, Virginia. Spoke with such a "country twang", that if you didn't know better, you would have sworn that he grew up on the side of a mountain somewhere in southwestern Virginia. Played some of the prettiest fiddle I've ever heard, in a local bluegrass band.
Ah, the Burke that I remember. Not much more than a railroad crossing on a small two lane road. Then riding down the old dirt road thru the woods, to where it finally met Rt. 123.
Those roads aren't there anymore. Replaced by houses. And stores. And houses. And traffic lights. And houses.

Back in 1953 or so, my dad's stepfather died. He'd owned some land out Waxpool way, and my grandmother declared that she wanted to sell it: "It's horrible land, and they [the tenants] are horrible people".

My dad (who was in his early 20s) prevailed upon her to at least go look at it, so they did. They got on Route 7 and drove and drove and drove, and then took some other roads, and finally (probably after asking some folks) found the property.

What they found was a shack -- with a pile of manure in the front yard. That was enough for her: back they went to the city and she sold it.

In the mid-1980s, my dad was out that way and had some time to kill, and said "I wonder if I can find that property". (He had an odd sort of memory, and knowing him, he remembered an address or something.)

Sure enough, he found it -- and the same shack was there, still with a pile of manure in the front yard! He said he looked skyward and said, "You were right, mom!"

Mind you, it's probably part of Broadlands now. But holding onto it for 40+ years probably wouldn't have made sense.

Even weirder, I told this story to a friend who grew up out that way; he laughed and said "I know which house that was!" Apparently the pile of manure was odd even for country folk...

Go to Google Images...2113 Westmoreland Street as pictured in the 1953 photo with the 2 wrecked cars...still there, looks pretty much the same, with some addition.

I remember Springfield Cinema well from the mid '70s to early '80s

They added a second theater or divided it into two theaters.

The Church next door is still there and there is a Panda Express accross the road.

Whenever I eat outside at the Panda Expxress, I look across the street and think

about Springfield Cinema.

Thomas J. Qualters was born on August 5, 1904 in Boston, MA and was a member of the 25th RTT of 1933. Prior to joining the state police he attended Notre Dame University where he was enrolled as a pre-law student and was a member of the football team. Among his state police records is a letter of recommendation from Notre Dame head football coach Knute Rockne. Qualters', while stationed at the Andover Barracks, was detailed to guard President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s son James who attended both the Groton School in Groton, MA and Harvard University. During his assignment guarding James, Tom met President Roosevelt and was later named as his bodyguard and personal aide in December 1936, and resigned from the state police. Due to the paralyzing effects of polio on the president, Tom was required to assist FDR while entering and exiting autos and buildings in order to minimize the president’s disability while he was in the public eye. He served as the presidents aide for six years and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Captain and Intelligence Officer. He retired from the military as a Lt. Colonel. After his military service he served in private security and was appointed Chief of Police in Keene, New Hampshire on July 31, 1950. He died on July 24, 1968 in Antrim, NH and is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Bennington, NH.

Loyal American ..Interesting life..

The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad at the crossing of Shreve Road. Sometime in the late '50's or early '60's.
About 1/2 mile to the west of the West Falls Church Station.
Look at all the cars coming down Shreve. It must have been rush hour.
.
p.s. The crossing has been straightened and smoothed out since then. I can't jump that little hill anymore.
I've been airborne there more than once.

To hell with raunchy old soda and beer cans, let's chew up this great old picture of the train crossing. Old road, old cars, possible foreign cars...

Cool picture Falls Church! I think those cars are racing to beat the train to the crossing. Is that the intersection of the dragged VW posted earlier? That was the best picture. Perfect timing of its posting.

I don't think it's the same place. Knowing what I do about the area, something tells me that it's a few miles to the east of this picture.
More in the actual city limits of Falls Church, heading towards Arlington.

The train crossing is Shreve Road heading south from Route 7 towards Lee Highway before you get to the Elementary School. Really doesn't look all that different now, except the train tracks are now the W&OD bike trail.

The wreck picture is on Roosevelt near where it crosses Four Mile Run and goes under I-66 near the East FC metro.

Red arrow shows the trolley bridge abutment on the eastern/northern side of the W&OD in Vienna.
Green arrow shows the location of the current day bike trail.
Pink arrow shows my guesstimate in modern-day photos of where the W&OD tracks would have been, roughly.
Blue line shows the change in elevation in a modern photo from the bike trail to where the tracks were.

First photo: The Washington, Arlington, & Falls Church Electric Railway bridge over the W&OD railroad, including the bridge's eastern/northern abutment, in Vienna (near what is the present day Follin Lane-Electric Avenue bend) almost 100 years ago. This photo is from the archives of the Interstate Commerce Commission, according to Ames Williams's book on the W&OD.

When this photo is compared to the modern day photos, one gets a sense that in the building of the bike trail 1) they filled in some of what had been a deeper cut over which the electric railway bridge had passed and 2) on this portion of the bike trail (as in others) the bike trail itself does not follow the exact path of where the tracks were.

Second photo: is a zoom-in from the first photo, to give a better sense that what we are looking at in a portion of photo 1 is indeed the abutment.

Third photo: is a recent ground level view of the abutment. It shows how the bike trail is immediately next to the abutment at the the immediate level of the base of the abutment. This contrasts with photo 1, where the railroad's tracks are 1) a greater distance from the abutment than the modern bike trail and 2) in a cut at a level well below the base of the abutment. (Which makes sense, of course, given the need for locomotives and rolling stock to clear under the trolley bridge and pass safely by!)

Fourth photo: modern day, showing the abutment from the area of its opposite abutment, and giving a sense of a lower elevation on the southern/western side of the bike trail, where the tracks of the railroad would have been. (Not as low as when the railroad was in place, however).

Fifth photo: a recent overhead shot, to orient the viewer.

It would be interesting to know more details about the construction of the bike trail beyond what is easily available, e.g. to what degree in different places they "filled in" where cuts had been or diverted from the exact path of the tracks, and why.

One reason why the path diverted from the tracks was that when the railroad was torn up the right of way was sold to VEPCO which put up power lines. By the time the park authority acquired the right to build a bike path the former spots where the tracks were originally laid were frequently already occupied by power company pylons.

Yup, mom still has some of those Pepsi glasses in the cupbord.

The only Arbys left I know in VA is Linconia. Is that the "Klein's on the Square" location? Linconia Arbys has been there forever.

I wonder if Arby's would accept those coupons? LOL....The ones I have been to in the area (Lincolnia, Merrifield, Woodbridge, Clinton) all accept expired coupons as long as the item is still on their menu.

I see the fries were not so curly 40+ years ago.

Yeah, the "Klein's on the Square" is the Lincolnia Arbys. The S. Klein's was located in the Shoppers/gym part of shopping center. I think when Klein's went out the shopping center was renamed.

I know exactly w where that is and I've caught air there too! Though my favorite spot for getting airborne was Kerns Rd between Sleepy Hollow Rd and Annandale rd. That one was fun.

I'm familiar with that little hill on Kerns also, but the times that I drove there, there was too much traffic and too many houses around. It would be a great hill out in the middle of nowhere.

We had a few of those Pepsi glasses, now that I see the picture. Kind of cheap, not the best quality, and they all got broken one by one over the years. Same with the "freebies" that we used to get from the gas station for buying a certain number of gallons.

Saw the picture of the Pepsi glasses, and it reminded me of the old McDonald Land glasses from the early 70's. I called my Mom who is now in her late 70's, and she still has a few in the back of her kitchen cupboard.

As a teenager in the 80s, I worked behind the snack bar as a trainee. My trainer taught me how to steal from the company starting Day 1. I couldn't believe it and although I gave it a good try (embezzling), it never set right with me. It wasn't too long before I quit.

Remember Pla-Mor like it was yesterday. Used to bowl Saturdays in the kids league in the late 60's . They used to serve us 10 cent hamburgers. My mom and dad bowled the double's league and my dad also bowled the men's league on the Hitt Contracting team. Have a pic of them when they won the championship. Had a great game room with one of those baseball pinball machines

Well, the main car is a 1961 PLYMOUTH...quite radical. The other background cars could be a year or 2 newer...I'd say 1962/3. BTW, at far left is the tail of a beloved VW. :)

My Dad was always very thrifty with his hard earned money, I guess because he was around during the great depression. He would take his nearly bald Montgomery ward brand tires over to Weber tire and have snow tire recaps put on them to use during the winter. He was too tight to buy a couple of snow tires at Wards or Sears like most normal people did.

Thanks for the memories!

I had a pair of 67's back in the late 70's. You could pick up a good running older Bug with a newer 6 month inspection sticker for around $100 bucks.

Remember the state safety inspections had to be dome every 6 months back then, but if you had a buddy that worked at a gas station it was a non-issue.

The 1967 VW Bug was the best. It was the first year for the 12 volt electrical system, and the last year for the cool old style bumpers with reverse lights - The only year where the reverse lights were on the bumper.

The 12 volt electrical system made it possible to put in a Kraco Stereo system with 8 track tape player.

In the mid '70's one of my brothers used to have '68 (?) bug. Since he was working at a VW dealership at the time, he was able to get hold of a Blaupunkt stereo/cassette, which was the top of the line that VW used at the time. He had two home stereo speakers sitting in the backseat, with just enough room in the middle for someone to sit. It rocked.
One time he, a friend of his and I, were out cruising around the area. I was sitting in the back between the speakers. He had the stereo on but not too loud, so we could at least have a conversation. We were sitting at a traffic light, when another guy pulled up in the next lane. He heard the music, and turned up his stereo to show off. My brother cranked up his stereo, and I picked up the speaker that was next to me, and held it up to the window. The other guy looked over, like "Sh*t!", and then got a smile on his face.
The light turned green, and we all took off.
Fun times back then.

If properly prepared, Bugs could be pretty quick, but nothing like a big block Cuda or Chevelle.

I know that some Bugs can definitely be quick, especially with them being so light. But my brother hadn't hot-rodded the engine, only the stereo. LOL. So, no, we didn't race.
I don't remember what exactly the other car was, only that it was an American car. Might have been a Chevelle. Wasn't a Mopar.

Yes, that's the Westover Shopping Center on Washington Boulevard about with the intersection with N. McKinley Street. It looks like the person that took the picture is standing in front of the Post Office, which is still there, and you can see the Westover Market, which is still there also. The Black Forest Inn, and the Bakery are gone, it looks like the Post Office has taken all that space.
Great, you had to post a picture with a Volkswagen Squareback parked prominently in front didn't you? LOL
Great Picture though. Thanks for posting it. It brings back memories.
Washington Blvd. was one of the main routes we used to take into Arlington if we went to the old Sears Catalog place to pick up things that we had ordered. And also where Kirby's Dodge was that was "advertised" earlier on this page.
p.s. Currently at the far end of the shopping center is a Fairfax Deli. They have great sandwiches. There used to be one in 7-Corners Shopping Center in the '80's, and also one in Vienna in the '90's, but they both closed. (No I don't work there)

At the end of Westover now is The Italian Store, not Fairfax Deli. The Black Forest Inn has since moved a bit futher down and has long been just The Forest Inn. One of the last dive bars in the area. Pete's Barber Shop opened up there around 1981 and Ayer's Hardware Store is still humming along as the stalwart of Westover.

Used to work in Roslyn -- mid 80s -- and loved to go to Tom Saris' Orleans House for lunch.

Very inexpensive. Would have the amazing salad bar for lunch and take the roast beef sandwich home for dinner for around $5.00! And the friendly guy cutting the huge slabs of roast beef would give me some very meaty bones to take home for Max the beagle. Good Times!

The gang went out for a last dinner when they closed -- 2008?, it was knocked down and then the recession hit -- and "you can't go home again," it was very expensive and not nearly as good.

Ooops, that's what I meant to type, The Italian Store, but my brain said Fairfax Deli. The Italian Store used to have locations where I said in 7-Corners and Vienna. Sorry, my coffee was still brewing when I typed that.

I don't know exactly where the Bob's Big Boy was, but I see a VW Bug, and a VW Rabbit.

The Bob's Big Boy in Annandale was across Little River Turnpike from the Giant.

The structure looked like this one but the background building looks wrong from the 236 location. I think this might be the BBB on Route 1 in Beacon Hill, just a guess.

I think the 80s Bob's Big Boy might just be in "downtown Springfield" in the KMART Shopping Center.

Correct. That's the old Shoneys on Route One in Alexandria (Beacon Hill). You can tell by the building behind it

"Slide of the Hot Shoppes at the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Drive in Arlington in 1961. Became a Bob's Big Boy a few years later."
