When my buddy moved "Way" out to Centreville from Falls Church @1988 we got everything for BBQ's and Parties at that Giant.

That Giant is now occupied by a Dollar Store and the Centreville Post Office. Looks like Peoples Drug store was replaced by Trader Joes.

Dumb question, what / where is the Stone Bridge? Lifelong resident, but never travelled out 'to the countryside' that was Centreville back in the day.

Stone Bridge is just off Lee Highway in Manassas Battlefield Nat'l Park. It crosses Bull Run. There's a parking lot and history trail next to it.

Some lucky map searching shows it to be at the east end of Manassas National Battlefield. It crosses Bull Run just north of rt 29.

If you have some time Pohick Church is a interesting stop. The soldiers that stayed there during the Civil War did carvings into the sandstone that is part of the church.

Names, cities, units, and dates.

You know Sleepy, I have a vague memory of the Iron skillet. Did they have some kind of brunch on Sundays? My Grandmother was in a nursing home for a year or two over in that area and I remember my parents taking us for brunch after church. I think it might have been the Iron Skillet. This would have been around 1973 or 74.

Its currently the German Shoppe.

The Iron Skillet was another favorite that was lax about carding when you got cocktails.

I still miss Giffords

It was next door to Giffords. At one time it was Daks Grill before it became the German Gourmet.

Great pic of modern computing power circa 1988 - Complete with back up legal pads.

Where was the Jefferson Theater?

In 1980, I went to a movie somewhere that looked like the interior in this photo. All the Safety Patrols from Fairfax County were hearded in together. I can't remember exactly where but it seems like we took a bus from MT Vernon to somehwere in central or western Fairfax County.

Good Shot. I like the old look better. Funny though, in the 60's (?) they moved the Theater front to the side and Baskin Robbins was where it is now.

That's right Sleepy, I always remember the entrance on the back side. Chillis and Goodwill entrance were on the back side.

Great! I saw Towering Inferno, Posiedon Adventure, AND Tidal Wave there. I saw Jaws at the theater that was in a strip mall of sorts just west of Tysons Corner on Rt. 7. Can't recall the name of that theater. The strip mall was on the left when heading west. Best part, I remember there was a billboard out by Rt. 7 there advertising....VW's!

Those old Studabakers are cool. Look at the upright windshields and tiny a pillars on those old cars, the a pillars are almost un-noticeable. Not like the tree trunk a pillars on modern cars that you have to do the mombo in your seat to see around at every stoplight because they hide pedestrians, cross traffic and semi trucks crossing your path.

Interesting photo. As I had never heard of Beacon Field, decided to look it up. It was located in the Groveton area and closed in 1959 to make way for Beacon Mall. You can find more on the history of Beacon Field at:

While I don't remember Beacon Field, I certainly do remember the old Washington-Virginia Airport at Baileys Crossroads. When I was maybe 7 or 8, the Baileys Crossroads Little League used a couple of baseball fields adjacent to the airport. Our coaches were always trying to get us focused on the game instead of watching the airplanes take off and land.

I also remember the Goodyear Blimp visiting the airfield several times. Here's an old photo of the blimp flying above the airfield. You can see some of the planes parked by one of ramps. Another plane is flying underneath and right of the blimp. The photo is dated 1961 and looks to be taken from across Seminary Road (perhaps from Magnolia Lane?).

Does anyone recognize the year/make/model of the parked car?

Two more of the old Washington Virginia Airport at Baileys Crossroads.

I'm pretty sure that at least one of these has been posted before, but it was a lot of pages back . . .

I think there's still parts of a runway light attached to a building across from Skyline Mall. Beacon Airfield pics are way cool. Dixie Pig was where you went after landing your bad ass little plane.

Yes. It was on the right side of Rt. 7 heading west. Went there once.

If anyone can post a photo or two of the small movie theater that was where Jaxx once stood, that would be awesome.

I've always wondered about that lower level.

Looks to be about a 1955 Pontiac or Oldsmobile - GM product for sure.

Yea, Good guess... It's a Pontiac...you can tell by the 2 chrome "straps" on the hood. Looks like a wagon...my favorite!

How about the black car backed into the drive way? My guess is a 1959 or 1960 Mercury Monterey.

I wonder if Washington-Hoover was the airport travelers would use to come to DC from the midwest in 1932. Was flying the way to travel? I bet they might have used the train. Who flew, the wealthy, politicians (same thing).

No problem. I don't think I ever heard Washington-Hoover till this morning but there is plenty of information about it.

I like the "Shell" gasoline sign at Washington-Hoover. I guess that was there to direct the pilot to the fueling area and not so much an advertisement.

Those buildings look to be positioned on what is now the North Parking lot of the Pentagon.

Look at the size of that hotel room. And all the extra seating so you did not have to just sit on the bed.

My uncle had a Toranado and a Vista cruiser, he was a olds guy wile my dad was a Ford guy. I remember that Vista cruiser had six ashtrays each equipped with it's own 12 volt coil cigarette lighter. There was a whole lot of smoking going on back then. My cousin and I would heat those lighters up and try to burn each others hair with them while my Dad and uncle were up front smoking cigarettes and going about 80 mph down the highway and none of us had seatbelts on!
