The picture of Cherrydale: Those men are walking down Old Lee Hwy where it meets Lee Hwy (bypass, I guess). So Lee Hwy was on both sides of VW dealer.

I think it was on RT 7 near where Tyco Road is now

It later became a Esso Station, and was in business as a Exxon years later, but in the same old building.

Wow, I'm sure Colonel Lindsay would be quite surprised to find that his house now has such a great view of I-66 and Metrorail.

I have noticed that almost every time a nice old picture appears on this thread it shows up a few days or weeks later on Facebook. While I am reasonably sure no one here has a problem with that it would be nice for you facebook users to post that you got your content from fairfax underground. Heck, that might bring more people here, maybe even people with a box in their basement loaded with old pictures. More pictures=more fun!

Does anyone know when the East Falls Chirch station was built?

And is it still in Amissville? I go down 211 often enough but have never seen it.

To my knowledge the W&OD's East Falls Church station was never rebuilt after it was torn down. If it was and is still in existence I'd love to know so I can photograph it. I've read that it was the third station at that site, and supposedly at one time all three station buildings were still in existence. I have not seen pictures of the others.

I believe the last EFC station was built by Southern before the W&OD leased the line, which means sometime before 1912. It is similar to stations on other Southern lines, and it is also similar to the now gone Leesburg passenger station. The Leesburg freight station still existed as of a few years ago.

I suspect these two men had every good intention of rebuilding the station but their dream never came to fruition. The old E.F.C Station probably rots in Amissville where it was first laid.

If the label on the picture is true, this must be the Henry H. Douglas of the Henry H. Douglas Collection of Washington & Old Dominion Railroad photographs located in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax County Public Library.

In 1979 radio station WPGC and Logan ford of Springfield Virginia gave a car away in a contest. Listeners had to identify three mystery voices to win an Indy 500 Pace Car replica and $1,000. The correct answer was Bob Seger, Anne Murray & Julius Irving.

In a search of “Fairfax” on the Library of Virginia/Virginia memory/images site, I got lucky by happening upon the railroad photograph collection of Henry H.Douglas (1906-1989). The labels on the photos posted here, are the labels given the photos on the site. The picture below indicates it is a photo of the second east falls church station and is located at: "6854 Lee Hwy. Arlington, VA” Google maps shows the location right where you might expect it to be. I don’t know the timing and location sequences of the various E FC Stations, I just happened upon these photos and the history they provide and I am as excited and curious as the rest of you as I merely transfer the information to make available to you.

It’s all very interesting and what has become more interesting to me is the story behind the two men, Henry H. Douglas and Arthur L. Brown, and their dream of rebuilding the station. It occurs to me with every photo Mr. Douglas took of the taking down of the station he was likely going to use to build it again. How much time he (they) took to lay out the materials. It wouldn't take long to tear a building down but to package up a puzzle that you were going to be opening yourself and putting together later, would take a lot of time and thought. How did he get that job, I wonder? He likely got it by offering to remove the station for the Town free-of-charge.

Enjoy.

After looking at these photos, (Thank You Very Much, causican), they are bringing back a few distant memories from the area.
Yes, they were as the Googly map says, but, now I remember seeing that building on the other side of Lee Highway from the proper "East Falls Church Station".
The East Falls Church station was on Fairfax Drive/Lincoln Avenue at the western side of the intersection with Lee Highway. The second station was on the east side of Lee Highway. About where the EconoLodge is now.
I don't think it was so much of a second "Station", I think it was a second location across the street to help for storage or administration.

Maybe one was passenger, one freight. Their age would help clarify their story somewhat. Better, the input from a really old fart.

I have sad news about the station - It gone as of 3 years ago. The property was buried in construction salvage items, and everything was visible from RT 211.

If you traveled from Sperryville to Warrenton to collection was piled on the right side of RT 211 just before RT 229.

Several years ago trucks and loaders began hauling away everything to metal recycling buyers.

All that is there now is an empty patch of land.

Sorry, why?
I don't only type the letter O, I also type N, and P, and all the other letters of the alphabet.
Don't worry, there weren't many O's in there at all.

I believe the buildings were used sequentially. When the first one no longer fit the railroad's needs they moved it and built the second. When the second one no longer fit the railroad's needs they moved it and built the third. I doubt there was enough business at the East Falls Church location to justify separate passenger and freight stations. Remember that the railroad also had a West Falls Church station where the tracks crossed Route 7.

JI-At one time there was an open sided shed at Sideburn that looked like an early 20th century equivalent of a Metro bus stop. I have seen a picture of it, and I will see if I can track it down.

Also, have you seen this before? It's a map of all the railroads we had in 1921: https://www.flickr.com/photos/52055881@N07/24975713081/

In response to the note that the IHOP in Ballston was the late night place to go, I would argue that Mario's Pizza was the place to go at any hour after Midnight. Many a time we stopped by and purchased a slice of pizza to quell the hunger. The best part was the wide array of individuals who were also there getting food.

To complement the photo of the Dunn Loring W&OD station a few posts up in the thread: there's a photo of the Dunn Loring station for the Washington, Arlington, and Falls Church Railway (after it was converted to a residence) at the link below. It's from the Online Photo Collections at the Library of Virginia website. The photo is from the Henry H. Douglas collection in the Fairfax County Public Library Photographic Archive.

Actually, I think it makes perfect sense.
The trains quit running in August of 1968, and you can see that the tracks have been removed, it just looks like a dirt road in this picture. And farther up this page it shows the station being dismantled in October of 1970, so this picture was taken some time before then. From the lack of leaves on the trees, it was maybe taken in the winter '69-'70.
Great pictures by the way, Thanks.
Love the 1907 one showing both the Railroad and the Trolley lines with the running trolley car.
The 1970 picture is looking east toward DC, and the 1907 one is looking west toward Vienna. The road is what Lee Highway used to look like.
Used to.
HaHa.

Another old Lee Highway picture, somewhere between Falls Church and Fairfax Courthouse. I wish I knew exactly where, I'd love to take a current picture of the same location for comparison.
Sorry for the blurry image, it was actually quite a bit smaller when I found it, so I blew it up a bit, hoping to figure out where it is.
I found this years ago, but don't remember where.

If I were looking for a bend in the road today that matches the bend to the left at the top of your picture, David in FC, I would say try the bend after PanAm on your way to the circle, after you go down the first hill and up the other side, the road bends left just like that before starting down the next hill. What do you think?

This is the only picture of Sideburn I know of. As you can tell it is not much more than a three sided shed. It is from a book on Southern's Washington Division which I think is now out of print.

To be honest, I was thinking of the same location, except, I think the shadows are wrong.
If the picture is looking westward toward Fairfax, then the sun would be in the south, and therefore coming from the left side of the picture.
Unless, possibly, maybe, the picture was taken first thing in the morning, right around the first day of summer, where the sun does rise a bit to the northeast instead of due east.
Maybe?

I don't think that matches up to that location - the hill is steeper coming from Pan Am next to the ICF building.

This can be easily explained by tectonic shifting.

Hey, don't bring up that subject. I was there. I led the fight to reunite Pangea, but the opposing forces were too strong.
The plates drifted, as well as the saucers and the bowls. There was nothing that we could do. I won't even bring up what happened to the silverware.
And don't blame the Tectons, how would you like it if you were told to remain still for so long. Yes, they did the same as you would do, they shifted. You can't blame them.
Thanks for opening old wounds.

Now, back to a bit more reality.
I wonder.....
Still looking westward, but facing west-north-west. Still allowable for an early morning shadow in the original picture.
Just inside what is now the Beltway, Shreve Road off in the distance where the school bus is. But Shreve didn't connect to Lee right there until after the Beltway was built, it connected where Hartland Road is now, which is the other side of the white building you see in the distance.
So, this might be it.
Maybe.

David in Falls Church. The only thing is, I thought I noticed in the old picture a bank rising up on the right of the road. If you look, the electric lines appear to climb up higher, as if on a bank. At that same point in your picture of Shreve on the right, the terrain is doing the opposite almost sinking into a hole.

How about if you look at Lee Hwy heading north from the circle towards Pan Am, just where Blake is? It does bend to the left just at the end of the Circle Tower entrance, there is a bank that rises up from the road on the right as it bends left. The road is wavy there but is not making as big a dip as it does closer to Pan Am. They’ve just about flattened out every wave and ironed down every curve, but maybe you can see something that would confirm it. I’m not sure about the shadows, but maybe they fit going this direction.

Causeican...that theory seems plausible (I used to live on Blake) as I drove that often. The problem is, in the photo, no true landmarks stand out. Over the years curves could be softened etc. With no real unique tree's, signage, or other markings it's gonna be a tough one. I first thought that on the left of the car was a sign, and that is what they are looking at...now I'm not sure.

I can see that about this location also. My only concern is the little zigzag where the two cars are, just before the apartment entrance. That's not in the original picture. Looking at an aerial photo from 1937, it doesn't look like the zigzag is there, but it's pretty fuzzy. Usually they straighten out a zigzag, not add one, but, you never know.
It's interesting that the power lines are on the right side of the roadway in both of the "today" images, just like in the original.
If only the original was taken with an I-Phone, we would have the GPS coordinates. HaHa

The zig-zag could occur easily ass they added extra lanes...funny how the power lines are in similar spots..oh well...

In february of 1979 my wife and I were living in the house near the entrance to Lake Fairfax Park. I was the Asst. Manager. The house was torn down about 1982 or so. Bob Ryan had predicted a dusting of snow overnight. Early the next morning I woke up to about 30 inches of "dusting". The house sat in a small depression and the snow leveled off the area. About that time I got a call from Wayne Cottrill. He informed me that I did not have to open the park due to the snow. I informed him that since all the doors of the house opened outward, I couldn't leave the house to do anything. I later climbed out a window and trudged into the park to check the buildings, because they all had flat roofs. all was fine and I trudged back home. The wind had considerately filled in my trail.

The next day the Park Authority sent a road grader to clear the roads in the Park. When it got to my driveway, the operator pulled up behind my car and dropped his front blade and tried to back out thereby clearing my driveway. Instead all he did was get stuck. The road grader stayed behind my car for three days until crews with loaded sand trucks and chains finally pulled him and me free.

Yeah, I kinda remember the storm of "79.

What is the history behind the home at 3723 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22030? All I can find out is that it was built between the 1950s and 1960s. I can't even find any good imagery of it either, anywhere. Having it tucked in behind those two churches makes it a bit difficult.

Do you mean this place?
This pic is from 2015. Looking back at the older aerial photos, it wasn't there in 1953, so it was built later than that.
It looks like the driveway to the house is accessed from the parking lot for the Christian Science church, so I assume that it's a residence for someone that works/runs/operates there.
Maybe Tom Cruise lives there.
But it doesn't look too historic at least.

My Father flew in from Seattle on a flight that landed at Dulles back in 1965, and the grounds crew lost his luggage. He had traveled here on business, so he went to a men's store to buy some replacement clothes so he could complete his business assignment.

It was at the men's store that he met a nice cashier as he paid for his order - My Mother.

They were married in 1967 when he returned from Vietnam from his work as a civilian consultant

Just as far as Arthur Treacher's.

No, srsly: remember, IAD was out at the ends of the earth: no Dulles Toll Road, just the Airport Road. Sterling barely existed; Herndon was the Far West. So I'm sure the only reasonable way to get into the city was by bus: cabfare would have been considered exorbitant, and one wonders how many cabbies would even be willing to go out that far just to troll for a fare.

Dulles was considered a huge mistake for a number of years, as "nobody" used it. Seems to have gotten over that...

Yep. Dulles used to be dead. You could pull right up in front no problem most any time of day. Go inside and look down the length of the airport and you might see 25 people and probably half of them were working there.

Even long after that you could easily park in that front lot. Which I recall was the ONLY lot at the time. They didn't build the remote parking areas with shuttles until much later.

That little Colonel Lindsay neighborhood off Idylwood got built up around 1993-'94 and the Mount was butchered in 1993 as well. I do wonder if Colonel Lindsay's heirs got to subdivide and sell off the property, or if it changed hands long ago. The Mount recently sold in 2013 at what seems to be a rather reasonable price for the area. The "front" is now in the back and faces southeast towards I-66.

Those busses were used to transport hoards of hungry international travelers to and from local Arthur Treacher locations, were they could feast on Fish-n-Chips, then catch their return flight home.

Probably not true

but when I took a bus trip with my sixth grade class in 1981 from Alexandria to NY City, we were given "catered" food. It was just a boxed dinner from Holly Farms or Arthur Treachers. It was so bad my friend through his food out the window. LOL.

No from my Age and Time it was 7-11 which I believe was Carsons Trading Post prior. The Train Station is the small building across the street on Burke Rd from the fire house. It has been turned a few times on its foundation, As I understand it, the Rocks are the original bed of the Tracks when it went by the race track, or in reality Burke Rd, The Tracks were moved after the Civil war to their current location. After the Marshall House was trying to be moved and then Burned down, 7-11 relocated to its current location. The cemetery is behind the block wall at the end of the parking lot.

Wow! Love whats been getting posted here lately, thanks everyone.

Here are a couple pictures from Annandale HS yearbook but not sure of the date. The Jack in the box was located at John-marr drive and route 236 where Popeyes now stands. I wonder if the current Popeyes building is the original Jack in the box or if the original structure was torn down?

It's Ossian Hall. Here's a picture of the house from a different angle taken in August, 1959, just before the Annandale VFD burned it the following month.

I believe it is the same building...the transition was quick if I remember correctly.

What????? They had Jack in the Box here? When did that greatness end? Loved that place when I lived in Arizona for a while.
