The pictures of downtown McLean got me thinking and I just pulled this off my old laptop that sat in a drawer for years. This intersection must be one of the most photographed intersections in Virginia!

@cause, As I stated above..you may have missed it, it is a 74-76. That is when the new "molded" rear-ends started...before it was more of a whale tail spoiler...cool car no matter what.

In that first shot the count is 3 VW's/Jaguar/and a hill i believe coming the other way. Point being any given late 50's NOVA shot would be almost ALL American. Agreed on the coolness of the Stude!

I missed that third VW hiding beside what looks like a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville.

Volkswagen Bugs were very popular, and with the amount of military families in Fairfax County, it is no wonder the population of BUGS was huge.

Most all Army/USAF enlisted and officers did a tour in West Germany during the late 1950's so they fell in love with the "Peoples Car."

I think your correct about the military thing, although it is unusual to see 4 or 5 (Is that a Hillman coming into the intersection?) "foreign" cars in a 50's FFX Cnty photo. My Dad always said Hippies drove VW's when I was a kid. Ironic to find out from one of his old Military friends he had one in the 50's....never told me. :)

Almost make me think that is Jeep Willis Wagon from that era in the intersection, facing away from the camera.

OH yeah! My Grandma had a '48 Commander and I watched it rust to death in the backyard. As a kid we used to play in that car where it sat with 4 flat tires, my Dad had it towed away when he sold our Annandale home in 1980.

Google is a marvelous thing. The building is still called McLean House at 6800 Fleetwood Rd. Prices now go for upper $100K for a studio up to mid $400K. Built in 1975, they're still very affordable for McLean!

Hi Dave Henery - I think I recognize that Safeway. Atleast there was an identical one in a place called Eastover, MD on Indian Head Highway. It was built around 1957. It's now divided into smaller shops with the main tenant Top Dollar Pawn at 5525 Indian Head Hwy. I'm trying to attach a Google Map with the current view. I can remember when it used to look like the old photo. Note the chimney is still there but the roof was redone and the tower sign taken down. Let me know what you think.

It is interesting how 50W bows out, away from 50E as it crosses 66 and that the road bowed out even before 66 came through. Below is a 1997 image of the junction; a 1953 image; and a marked-up overlay of the two different years.

I attended Franklin Sherman in Seventh grade. Later I was working at the ESSO station across the street from the AMERICAN (AMOCO) when the school caught fire. In those days I always had a 35 mm camera nearby and I was able to take about a half a roll of pictures which I sold to the local paper. In those days the publisher was a customer of the ESSO (it changed to EXXON while I worked there) I can't remember his name or the name of the Mclean paper. But he used about three of the pictures, and interviewed me about the fire for an article in the paper. During that time Ed White owned the ESSO

I think the pic was from 1975 or a little later because of the Ford Gran Torino and Ford Granada.

From what it says here,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Torino#1972.E2.80.931976:_Gran_Torino
That body style was from 1972 and probably released fall of 1971 so that would be the earliest possible date so yeah most likely 1972 or later.

correction, as peoples drug store pointed out the Ford Granada was not released till fall of 1974 with a 1975 model year so it is likely 1975 or later.

wow

yeah, wpgc was the go to rock station in the mid 70s. we had a wpgc bumper sticker on our 1970 green chevy impala

Obviously the fast moving demographic shifts in pg county necessitated a change in music format shortly thereafter.

Providence Journal, yep thanks for remembering for me. It has been quite a few years ago and the memory slips a little from time to time.

I moved to McLean just as they were grading the area for the Giant ON 123,and I remember a power pole still supported by a pillar of dirt about six feet tall, that being how much dirt they removed from that spot to level the area for the parking lot. We used to get lemon and other flavor cokes at the soda bar in the Peoples Drug next door. But the food at Preston's Drug on Old Dominion was the better of the two.

In the picture of the Giant you can clearly see the McLean Vol fire station and its hose drying tower with the siren on top of it. later in my teens I would hang out with the firemen and play cards with them while they waited for a call.

The two story building you can see to the right of the fire station was the Sharon Masonic Lodge # 327. When I was 14 I joined the Order of DeMolay which was sponsored by the Lodge and then after getting out of the Army I joined the lodge in 1969. Later the property was sold to the Amoco Station and we built a new Lodge by Cooper Intermediate School.

The W&OD Dunn Loring station was located slightly to the east of where the W&OD trail crosses Gallows Road. The Dunn Loring station for the WA&FC/WV/A&F trolley line was where Electric Ave/Railroad St. intersect with Gallows Road. Both of these lines would have been north of where Dunn's Store was located.

50W doesn't bow out away from 50E, it's the other way around. I looked into this quite a bit a few yrs ago. Dig back farther than 1953 and you'll see route 50 east and west used to curve - when they widened/separated the road, they added the eastbound straight shot. The curve was there goin back to the original toll road circa 1802 - it was the easiest place to cross Difficult Run. There was a big hill that led down to the bridge and ended at the curve where accidents would happen. Locals called that Difficult Run Hill in the 1930s-40s. Screenshot shows 1936 topographic map where the curve crosses the creek, you can see the topo marking the hill on the eastern side, and Difficult Run going right through. Difficult Run was put into a concrete culvert in that spot when VDOT built 66

I remember those Rambling Raft Races! I'm surprised no one drowned or WPGC didn't get sued.

Does anyone else remember the Unlimited Hydroplane races in the Potomac they used to have in the '70's as well? A friend had an apartment in Crystal City and we loved watching and listening to the old Allison and Rolls Royce BIG V-12's thunder! The racers rented rooms in the hotels just off of 395 and you could see the boats on their trailers stored at an angle to fit.

The best days of Northern VA.

Steve Michaels was nice enough to share this 7 corners shot from 1961.

Does anybody know what those rectangular shaped structures directly in front of the storefronts are? As a kid I only took a few trips to 7C, we went to Landmark and later Springfield mall.

I believe the rectangular shaped structures are stores that aren't attached to the main building. At one point, 7-Corners had breezeways on either side before being totally enclosed to make it more mall-like. (Sort of like Landmark was originally.)

My mom preferred Shirlington and we didn't go to 7-Corners as much -- it had a Lansburgh's Department store which was why we went there.

Sleepy can you shed some light on the rectangular structures?

Blanche, You are correct....those are the stores w/ the inside entrances in the concourse. At some point the roof line was evened and then it was enclosed in the mid 70's. Fran...GREAT pics. Thanks!

Kings Park Shopping Plaza used to have the "rectangular stores" out front, too. But rather than cover them, they got rid of them. Used to not be able to see the other ones behind. This was in the "Vinnie's" era.

Oh yeah, I remember that. There was the Fortuna pizza place, a barber shop and a greeting card store out front. As I recall Vinnie's started out as the Mystique steak house.

I went shopping at the Shoppers Grocery Store about 30 minutes before the Home Depot shooting that night.

WTOP started broadcasting that there was another shooting in the 7 Corners area just as I turn into my driveway in Vienna - My blood ran cold.

The sniper shootings - It was something to live through.

Speaking of Landmark, its a zombie mall. It wont die. I thought for sure Christmas 2015 was its last. I had to pick up an online order from Sears today (free shipping to store- love that). There are even fewer stores at landmark this year, compared to last year. maybe 10 stores left, mostly mom and pop boutiques. A whole lot of empty space. The escalator to the third floor food court is blocked off this year so I guess no food there anymore. And no Santa this year. You know your mall is in a death spiral when you got no Santa. I think Sears is going to go bankrupt before Landmark Mall actually closes though. In a way it will be a shame though, Landmark ver. 2.0 architecture is just so 1987 in a Max Headroom kind of way.

I just want to say that is a great picture of 7 Corners. That is the way I will always remember the shopping center.
If I remember rights some of those small stores were,
Lower level, Wilsons men's stores, a jewelry store, Tiffanys bakery, Karins florist, Music Time.
I don't remember so much about the upper level, I think there was a Fannie May candy store, an optometrist office(my moms eye dr.), was there a lighting store?, a cigar shop?, a men's shoe store? I guess I spent most of my time on the lower level.

Another yearbook pic. There has been a few comments about the number of VW bugs on the road back in the day. My best friend in high school's dad took us here in the 70s and purchased a brand new canary yellow bug. I still remember that new car smell on the way home, lol it was probably formaldehyde.

Up until last year I would take the kids to see Santa at Landmark. No line. Ever. And a good Santa too - I am wondering how much it costs to heat and cool that place, and the taxes must be a fortune.

VW Bugs were so common they blended into the scenery - So to find 3 of them in this photo is no big deal. As for the Jag - They were around, but not very exotic.

Awesome pics. The bank is still there of course, but it's a BoA, now, across the corner from McDonalds/Mike's American Grill.

That was when Springfield was the center of the universe.

And I remember my Grandad getting service at LEE VW. We'd eat at Arthur Treacher's next door, as they did whatever they did...

I can't say what was around in the '60s, but there were a huge number of old Beetles in NOVA in the '70s. They had to come from somewhere.

Just a thought:

In my experience, especially online, when someone tags a picture as being "the 50s," that doesn't rule out the picture being from 1967.

I don't have the talent some of you have, so I won't try to date that picture.

Thanks for keeping me honest.

Those ages make even 1961 (when Beetles were becoming more common) unlikely.

I'd have to give points to the original claim -- this was good photo-timing for any time in the '50s.

I found one page (not saved, sorry) that put the national sales of Beetles in 1959 in the mid-hundreds. Soon after, boom! But before that, there were probably under 3k Beetles in the whole country.

Those are rows of Boxwood shrubs. I grew up in Layton Hall subdivision and a few of the new residents transplanted some of them to landscape their newly constructed homes. After Layton Hall Drive was constructed, there were a few rows between Belle Willard School and Layton Hall Drive that survived until at least the 1990s.

I don't know for certain, but I suspect the former owner was running a nursery on the side. The property was a farm with barn, stable chicken coop, etc.. The stable or what I think was a stable burned about 1960. The barn was around until about 1964 before it was burned down. From some of the historic aerials, you can see the remnants of what appears to be an orchard to the southeast. I think those facilities belonged to the Layton Hall estate. That area was my playground in the early 1960s.

In this picture, if the water tower is up by the courthouse, which way is the house facing? Which road is it facing - University?

Man! That’s really too bad this house was lost to development. It would have been a good keep; even if just the house.

Its hard to look at all the asphalt that covered all the rolling hills in and around the city. Anyway, thanks.

The water tower is located on the north side of the home located south-southeast of the barn stable complex in the historic aerials photo. There were two large homes on that property and both were facing west towards University Drive.
