More info on the towers -

The radio towers known as "The Three Sisters" began operation in 1913. Their heights were 600 450 and 200 feet tall.

Only Eiffel Tower at 984 ft. was taller than the 600 foot tall tower at the time.

The first Trans-Atlantic voice transmission/broadcast happened between the towers in Arlington and Eiffel Tower in 1915.

The towers were located in an area called Radio Virginia. They were dismantled in 1941 to prevent aircraft using the new Washington National Airport hitting them during take offs and landings.

The dismantled towers were transported The U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and were re-assembled - They are still standing there to this day.

I really hate to nerd this place up, but you obviously have never heard of Amos Dolbear.

It's sad that you think that advancing technology (or medicine, or literature etc) is the same as ripping someone off. This was the whole point of the Enlightenment - sharing and advancing ideas, getting beyond governments and religion to advance scientific theory in a shared environment.

Tesla himself got ripped off and died broke.

My great grandfather invented an improvement to the Piano i.e. Piano Forte Action. I have seen the patents as old patents are available on Google.

As far as I know, my great grandfather never saw a dime.

His patents were used by a large manufacturer.

They offered him $50,000 (this was in the 1890's). He held out for "a percentage of each piano sold."

He had a big patent law firm in Chicago representing him, and still got screwed.

I think Patent Law is an interesting area of the Law, and I wonder if this type of BS still happens to inventors today.

Those towers must be made of some high quality stuff. To last over 100 years, with the last 75 years spent in corrosive salt air, amazing!

I never met Jeff Todd, but that's very cool that his favorite Roy's is on the highway. Its a great road, now we can get from Telegraph to Rt1 (relatively ) fast again. Its hard to believe that the Beulah extension that used to run the same route, a bit farther south, has been closed for 15 years. I remember it closing after 9/11, roughly about the time the fire station near Beulah and Telegraph was finished (now close to Wegman's).

Was York Steak House a chain? Or was it just a one off? OK how about this, there was a European style (Konditorei) bakery in Springfield Mall, the kind that you could buy a slice of (very fancy) cake or pastry and a cup of coffee and sit down to eat in the store. Any pictures of that one?

I showed this to my 85 yr. old dad who grew up near Bailey's X Roads. He recognized the house and said it was Oliver's Beer Hall. Doesn't remember it ever being a private residence. The home was a couple of doors down from Irving Payne's stone house at the intersection of Rt. 7 and Columbia Pike. Oliver and Payne were the wealthiest men in the Bailey's area including the Benn family who owned the airport. Payne had a grocery store on Rt. 7. The building's still there and I think it's now a adult video store.

the aerial photos of Annandale is NOT a Nike missile site. It is an antiaircraft gun site which operated until the missile sites were built elsewhere. One of the buildings remains as an out-building for a home subsequently built on the site.

You are correct. The site was designated W-63 and was in existence from 1951 to 1957. A battery of 710th AAA Battalion, a Virginia Army National Guard unit, was there from 1951 to 1952. From 1952 to 1957, the site was manned by Battery C, 14th AAA Battalion. The last unit stationed there was Battery B, 70th AAA Battalion, in 1957 before the site was deactivated. The site was equipped with 90mm antiaircraft guns; the AAA gun sites were equipped with either 90mm guns or long-range 120mm guns (nicknamed the "Stratosphere" gun).

I'm not so sure about this one. I was told that it is Falls Church but for all I know it could be in another state somewhere. I guess it's a cool pic even if it's not NOVA. I bet some of the regulars here could confirm or deny the rumor of a Falls Church location.

Can't verify the location, but it can be dated by the two Mustangs, a 65 parked under the sign and a 68 or 69 far left.

I have looked over this photo several ways, and there are 3 Mustangs in the photo.

The Mustangs facing away from the camera are 1964 1/2 to 1966 era.

The third Mustang facing the camera by the trash can and phone booth is a Mustang II from the 1974 -1978 era.

With the history of Burger Chef and the collection of other classic cars in the parking lot, I put a date in the area of Summertime 1974 or 1975.

In my opinion the cars in the Burger Chef photo are,
Row closest to the camera, left to right are, mid 60's Mustang, mid 60's Plymouth Valiant, 3rd not sure.
2nd row facing away, left to right, mid 60's Oldsmobile, mid 60's Pontiac Bonneville, mid 60's Mustang.
3rd row facing camera, left to right,
69 Chevy Camaro, 66 Chevy Chevelle, 69 Mustang, not sure about the one behind the sign, mid 60's Pontiac Tempest.
4th row,
1st car, Oldsmobile or Buick, 2nd car 66 Ford Fairlane, not sure about the 3rd car, 4th maybe Dodge Coronet, last car maybe an Oldsmobile.
Car leaving is a Ford Galaxie, car driving by is a 55-57 Chevy.
I would place the date 69-70 because of the 69 Camaro and Mustang and the lack of 70's cars. Not sure of the location.

I have a couple differing opinions:

Front row: black 64-65 Mustang, 63-64 Plymouth Valiant, Early 1960s Mercedes Benz 190.

2nd row: 2 Mid-60s GM products, 64-64 white mustang, 65-66 Ford Galaxie pulling away (Joe Friday edition)

3rd row: 69 Camaro, 65-66 GM product (Not a Chevelle IMO), 67-68 Mustang (performance edition with the inboard driving lights), Not sure, 64 Pontiac Tempest

Back row: 65 Olds or Buick, 66-67 Mercury Comet (Fairlane twin), Not sure, 66-67 Dodge Coronet, 65 Chevy Impala

Car driving up close looks more like a 55-57 Ford than Chevy to me.

I would date it as 1969 - look at that crowd around the "newest" car in the lot - the 69 Camaro.

Please keep posting these - love the time warp!!

I know it's hard to see, but if you blow up the pic does that 69 Camaro have a Z/28 badge on the front of it? I know the SS and RS's were badged in the center of the grill, while the Z's were offset to the drivers side. It even looks like it has the stripes on it. If so that would be cool and would explain everyone standing around it.
Cool Pic! Keep them coming.

I can't say anything about a Burger Chef in Falls Church, but there is a 1972 ad with a list of locations on:
http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/1009677/page-59.html

and that lists a Vienna location on Gallows (now Old Gallows) at Rt7. This is it now: https://goo.gl/maps/13hr1VKwY9S2 .

If you make Burger Chef a Vitamin Shoppe and convert the Gulf station into a 7-11, I think that might be a match.

I believe Blanche asked the same question about the FRANCONIA B Chef location in Bailey's Xroads not being listed on that 1972 ad. I went to that location until at least 1970ish

I had the same impression initially. But I think the image is a long column ad split in two, with a bit of overlap. If you look at the top of the clipped items at the bottom of the first column, they match the top of the first full items in the second column.

Of course that doesn't mean that the ad was a complete listing. And certainly there could have been Burger Chef's that opened a month or two after that ad.

The only one I was personally familiar with was the one in West Springfield (not sure I ever ate there, but passed by a lot), which at some point became a Roy Rogers (ate there frequently -- umm, Double-R Bar Burger). That appears (like everything else) to have turned into an Einstein's Bagels.

It has been a long time, but that picture could have been taken from Rt. 7 and the street on the right being Gallows Road. It was that close to Rt. 7. Whoever it was above that said Vitamin Shoppe, that is exactly where Burger Chef was. Used to go there a lot.

You guys that are dating the picture in the late 60's, how do you account for what looks to be a more recent vintage Mustang facing the camera near the sign?

Dr. Carson Fifer owned Mount Eagle until he built a brand new home on St. Stephens Drive so he could be closer to Alexandria Hospital. I saw it right after the fire department burned it. Very sad. The Dell & Travers used to setup their carnival on the front part of the property. When you road the double ferris wheel you could see the big hole where the house was located. The house was probably the most important property in Fairfax County that was still around when it was burned. I was told the reason it was burned is because some motorcycle clubs were partying there and things got out of control. The police department just didn't have enough people to watch the property even though the Groveton sub-station was right down the street. I have feeling the builders of the IDI group, Guiseppe Cecci, persuaded the owners to sell the property so they could build Montebello Condominiums. Again, so sad. I agree with the other poster that said the house could have been left on the property. The (4) Montebello buildings do not use the entire plot.

I remember a simple wooden plank bridge over the Occoquan River that put up as a temporary crossing after the flood. It was single lane, and was used until the new concrete crossing was opened in 1974

Does anyone remember that bridge or better yet have a picture of it?

It looks like both bridges were replaced at some point. The one in the river has old stone piers -- the original bridge -- and the other one has a box girder over the roadway what was constructed when it became a four lane road.

The bridges might have been realigned somewhat when it was being replaced since I'm thinking that Route 1 is a bit further away from the train bridge now.

Agnes was really amazing in all the damage that happened when she went through Virginia.

Many bridges and crossings in this area have the 1974 Bronze Year plate on them because Agnes wiped them out.

Many that were destroyed were older and not up to today's standards.

I'll never forget it. I kept my 38 foot Chris*Craft at Hoffmaster's marina in Occoquan under the covered slips. As the rising water threatened to push our boats up through the roof, a bunch of us hauled ass. Just in time before the fallen bridge blocked the channel.

We went across the river, to the mouth of Mattawoman Creek, and rafted up about twenty boats. Mammoth drunken party as we rode out the storm.

> Who remembers hurricane Agnes?

I used to go over that one lane bridge to Occoquan back in 71 till it was wiped out by Agnes in June 72. Agnes took out the center support,The two others still are there. The old bridge had metal trusses that went up over your head on the sides as you drove over it. Once in Occoquan you saw the same road down hill as today except the place was a bunch of old beat up places. Lynn's sign was there back then, probably hanging from the same old pipe as now. You would come down 123 on the 2 lane road passing Reids store on the left, a small wood building .A few more miles and then go down hill a bit and into a right turn that you had to slow way down for.. then the river was on the left thru the trees , then a had left into the bridge entrance and a place to wait for any cars coming over to pass first.

At Lorton there was a old house owned by the Prison. It may still be there toward the Occoquan side. There were black folk sitting in chairs on the porch, people said that was the house for alcoholics.. And "Prison View Estate" has been along 123 a long time, don't know if it was called that back then.

I believe a poor fellow drowned in a sewage plant maybe in Manassas during that storm as the tanks were covered with water and he was working at the place and stepped into the wrong spot.

I was at Mineral Va right before Agnes to see a cycle race "Hell On Wheels" (just kidding about the name!) and Lake Anna was just a depression with cut down stumps. It started filling up after Agnes came thru. I remember turning at what is called Post Oak, there was a nice tree there and a big white house at the T intersection of Rt 208. Across the intersection was a old wood building all gray and beat..Some motor company. In 2009 I passed that way again after 37 years and the Nice House and tree and beat old gray building were and today are still there . Many of you passed by there going to Lake Anna if you got off at the Thornburg exit on I 95 as it was how you went to L.A Thru "Snell" LOL. Today there's a bypass they finished about 4 years back and you bypass the old intersection and ride like your on rails with Casey Jones to Lake Anna. Which of course in now filled with water..

The Rt 1 bridges, only 1 fell as I recall.

The I95 bridges were good to go, they were built in the 60's and were about 10 years old back then.

The other one was Rt 123 as in the pics. That crossing has gone from a 1 lane bridge in 1972 to a 6 lane today.

From what I hear from the locals at the time, the dam was in serious trouble, and whoever was in charge wanted to lower it to max level, but was overruled because doing that would flood Alexandria. But the result of leaving it up was much worse.

Wow, hard to tell from the picture, but how much distance could there be between the sheer cliff where the dam broke, and the foundation of that house? Looks like they came pretty close to getting washed away.

I'm pretty sure the damaged bridge in the first picture is of the one-lane Pratt Iron Truss bridge built in 1878. It wasn't in the best shape when Agnes hit and was swept downriver. It was replaced with the pedestrian bridge at the end of Mill Street.

From what I've read, the new traffic bridge was built several hundred yards downriver and I'm thinking this construction realigned Rte 123 with Gordon Blvd. This new bridge opened in 1974.

Old aerial maps show there was no river crossing where the current Rte 123 enters Occoquan until after 1971.

I remember Hurrican Agnes.

I was 3.5 yrs old.

Our basement flooded.

We didn't have a sump pump at the time and were the last house on our street - only about 100 yards from Dogue Creek.

Our street gently descended in elevation until reaching a dead end and bordered Woodlawn Country Club.

I can remember walking around our flooded Rec Room in bare feet.

I seem to vaguely remember the old bridge that was destroyed by Agnes.

We drove down Rt1 into Woodbridge quite often.

True ..and its on the same two piers that were there to the sides.. Now I don't know if it was that old..1878.. If History says it was..then it was. but that's where it was and it looked like the picture and its where the foot bridge is today. You can see the middle pier is round today that's where the one that got washed away was and then the center collapsed. More strain in the middle. I have seen that new round pier on the foot bridge with a whole lot of water against it, trees, ect big rains and storms over the years and wondered if it too was going to give way. Got a pic of it and will find it..about 30 years back.

I was a friend of bill Hollinger his dad ran a cardboard box factory that backed up to a set of railroad tracks, then 4 mile run in Arlington. After Agnes came through 4 mile run ate the tracks and undermined the rear of the Hollinger plant. This caused the foundation to collapse and the entire rear wall to fall away. Two doors up stream was a bumper re-chroming plant. There were rusty and newly chromed bumpers down stream for half a mile

It was located fronting Columbia Pike where the Dick's Sporting Goods Store/JH Gregg are located. It was there for a long time and probably got knocked down when that shopping center was built. The Shopping Center originally had a Bed, Bath and Beyond and Circuit City in it. Early 90s or so.

So looking at the historic aerials page, that hardware store (or the building) was around in 1949, but not much else there. I was surprised to see that the building that now holds Dicks and HH Gregg was there in 1962 and the hardware store was now in their parking lot. The buildings look newer than that.

For those above mentioning Bed Bath & Beyond and Michael's, they are still there, but behind HH Gregg.

There is a windmill next to the ramp at Baileys Crossroads that John Kelly did an article on a few years ago: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/27/AR2010032702390.html

Quonset hut. Showed it to my Dad who grew up there. Said it didn't do to much business during WW2 because the local men were off to war. It was across the street from Tommy Alwood's garage and on top of the hill was Bailey's School which was renovated and became George Mason Teachers College. You can find pics of the school here and on the GMU Website

Back in the early 1960s, the original building behind the Quonset hut was an office building with multiple bays. Not sure how it started out, but eventually one company leased the entire building around early 1970. I worked there back in the late 70s and left before the company moved to the Herndon area. The company had a distinctive arched concrete canopy over the entrance. Some people called it the "potato chip" and others called it "the flying diaper." Wish I had a picture of the thing!

The Quonset hut was in the lower parking lot closest to Columbia Pike. Quonset huts were prefab buildings widely used during WWII. We always wondered why someone used a Quonset hut for their store.

Shootin Craps is correct that Alwards garage was across the street. Many co-workers took their cars there for service.

Used to be a lot of Quonset huts around here. Seems like I remember another one farther down Columbia Pike toward Barcroft on the left before they built the houses there. A tool business operated out of one on Strawberry Lane next to the theater in Merrifield that was still in use right up until they built "Mosaic." Also one off of Rt. 1 toward Belvoir that I think was used as some sort of car repair place. Radiator shop maybe.

I believe that the main attraction was that they were surplus and could be bought and thrown up for cheap.

Does anybody know the history of a couple of old houses that were condemned for the "new" part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, that is, the portion heading north from Rosslyn? In looking through historic aerials, it seems both of these houses were existent right up until the late 50's/early 60's when the northern portion of the Parkway was cut through to connect to the new beltway under construction.

The fist is near Fort Marcy Park. If you are heading South, just past the 123 interchange, just before you get to Fort Marcy park on the "other side" of the parkway, on your right hand side, you can barely see the remnants in the winter-old stone walls, etc. Using historic aerials from the late 50's, you can see a house here, and several more down closer to the creek (I believe it is Pimmit Run), as a matter of fact, I think they are right on the creek. The "driveway" to the one house comes from Georgetown Pike, and cuts through or very close to the current Fort Marcy Park parking lot. The "driveway" to the other houses closer to the creek is not really visible.

The second is at one of the exits near CIA, which in the winter you can also see remnants. It is on the right side as you are headed north towards the beltway. Using historic aerials from the late 50's (and before) you can see a long driveway that starts basically where the current entrance to the CIA is now at 123-a long, straight driveway that goes straight through the current CIA property, all the way to the Potomac, where this house overlooked the river.

In more current aerials, including a couple from a few years ago, the outline of the house's foundation can clearly be seen.

Looked like a pretty big house with a great view, and judging by the driveway, it was on a pretty big property.

Rock did up his Quonset hut, what with the brick front and probably rear. The military ones would have been corrugated metal or something cheap.

merrifield one was called AET, automotive equipment and tools i believe. gravel parking lot and all. when they were closing up around 2005 or so, i scooped in and got a bunch of stuff on the cheap. most of the really good stuff was long gone though. i forgot the reason he scuttled the biz, i did ask why, as i had been dealing with them for a about a decade.

Although the Dicks Sporting Goods side of the building was expanded around 2007, the original building was built in 1955. My guess would be that the 1953 aerial above shows the beginning stages of construction.

The remains of the J. W. Kruettner mansion are what you see near CIA.
