I had forgotten all about that slide located in Springfield.

I believe I went there a few times at about age 3 or 4. I was born in 1969.

Was it located near or accross from Fisher's Hardward and the Pondersosa steak house? I seem to remember it being near there.

I have a feeling it was torn down no later than 1973.

This is a map of George Washington's farms in and around today's Mt.Vernon area

The map is from the 1790's, when George was still alive

I grew up in Woodlawn Manor, which is next to Grist Mill Park. There is an old barn on the Grist Mill Park property. The barn was built in the 1920's when it was a Dairy Farm.

The location of today's Gristmill Park is easily seen as a treeless section of the Union Farm - Field No.6 on the map.

My neighborhood is also part of Union Farm, just west of Field No. 6 - it is Field No. 5 on the map.

Dogue creek can be seen meandering across Union Farm in Field NO. 4.

A little to the south of Dogue Creek, you'll notice a boundary marker on the map.

This denoted a boundary between Fields 4 and 5 the Union Farm.

When I was a kid, my dad showed me remnants of old barbed wire in the woods, behind our house.

The barbed wire had run along an old fence line. Two trees on our property, one in the woods and one on the main yard were there when the fence line had run across what became our yard, once our house was built in 1960.

That fence line was just 100 yards or so south of Dogue Creek (we lived at the end of Buckner Rd).

That fence line was likely the same border between Fields 4 and 5 of Union Farm that can be seen on this 1790's map - The border between the 42 acres of meadow in Field no. 4 and 110 acres which comprised Field NO. 5 on the map.

We even called Grist Mill Park "The Field" when we were kids.

"The Field" (field no. 6 ) was worked by George's African American Slaves, where they grew various crops.

Their slave quarters can be seen on the map - a row of 4 or 5 right near the eastern edge of Dogue Creek, where it turns left and heads north.

Mt. Vernon Country Club is now located on the territory on the map that Dogue Creek runs through on the old Union Farm - Field No. 4 on the map.

The super slide was built in what was then basically a field between the Lums restaurant and the Springfield Medical Arts bldg (6828 Commerce St). The Lums restaurant is now a Title Max (6802 Commerce St).

Interesting note about the Springfield Medical Arts Building; it houses the first elevator in Springfield.

Does anyone know where the Rosenthal-Hayman Pontiac dealership was located in Alexandria? I stumbled across these two pictures of this dealership which were taken around 1979. I was curious where it was located in Alexandria. I grew up in the Alexandria area and I don't remember it.

Hello All,
First of all, you guys (and gals) have an awesome knowledge of FFX county history and incredible library of photographs. I am new to this board and a local history buff who has lived in the Fort Hunt area for the past 20+ years and was wondering if any of you may have some pics to post of Belleview or Hollin Hall Shopping Centers (or anything else down this way but south of the Rt. 1 corridor (that have not already been posted). I live in Riverside Gardens, and will contribute this original sales brochure scan from around 1964. I'm looking forward to seeing what pics you may be able to post!

I love it. The Beltway was still labeled as "Circumferential Highway". wow- way to hard for us FX Co grads to spell. Glad it was changed to Beltway. A little name history on that.

Since you are from "LA" (Lower Alexandria), here is something interesting from an earlier post, re: some of the old motels down that way:

The Travelers on right. Pool used to be where outside lane of rt 1 is now
Brookside Motel on left
Ford Motel (gone, now one building might remain, pool company) on right
Cedar Lodge (once Harry Smith) on right
The Virginia Lodge on left
Alexandria Motel on left
Fairview Motel (recently torn down) on left
The Old Penn Daw Motor Lodge on the right, where Wells Fargo is, went almost all the way to Applebee's on right
Next to Groveton Baptist, old motel on left there until around 2006, now Chili's (what was this???)
Beedoo Motor Lodge where/near Delray Glass on left
Old Groveton Elementary School (new apartment circa 2013-2014) on right
Wagon Wheel on right, now self storage facility on right
Old Mt Vee Motor Lodge on left, now townhomes
Belle Haven Lodge on left, at Richmond Highway and Sherwood Hall Lane, little plot of woods now
Doran Motor Court on left, abandoned for years, torn down circa 2008
Miller's Motor Court on right, Post Office now
Southern Motel on left
The Pines Tourist Court on left, now a hotel

Also, you may want to check other threads on the "infamous" Ft Hunt High fire from the late '70's, on "Hillbilly Heaven", further down Rt 1 in Southern FFX Co, and the "Mt Vernon Monster" from the late 70's.

I worked at Valle's in the early 80s. In fact, I was on a shift when Reagan was shot. Valle's didn't become Blackie's until sometime after 1982...

Many great stories, surprised Valle's didn't go out earlier with all the stealing that went on there. Waiters/waitresses eating lobster, etc.

Looks more like a GM product to me, early 70s -- 70 or so Skylark or Chevelle or GTO.

Blackie's opened in 1981, as did Deja Vu.

This photo was taken after 1985.

The USA Today Newspaper Machine by the front door of Blackie's. The USA Today started in November 1982, so that would put the date to at least 1983.

If you look at Commerce Street it his been widened with turn lanes. The construction process of adding turning lanes to Commerce started late 1984, and finished 1985. The 7-11 lost a huge chunk of their parking lot as a result.

The car parked in Blackie's parking lot is a 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4 door, and a 15 life expectancy of those cars was common.

My guess is this photo was taken in the late 1980's during the winter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The photo of the City of Alexandria was taken in the winter of 1972/73

The patrol car is a brand new shiny 1973 Plymouth Satellite - Note the old blue VA Public Use tags that were used until the mid 70's.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The photo of the north bound traffic on Shirley Hi-Way was taken in the summer of 1960.

I'll buy the Satellite, all those Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth products looked about the same.

But that's a Buick, probably a 1972. All the GM mid sizes changed body style in 73. That's the late 60- early 70's style. The Cutlass had the vertical taillights as did the Chevelles (well, round or square anyway). The car in that picture as horizontal taillights. Plus, look at the straight body line along the bottom, the 73 Cutlass had kinda rounded swoops coming off the wheel wells.

Definitely not a Chevelle (I had a 71 and have a 67).

You are correct it is not a 1973. The car is a GM product. I still feel it is a Olds Cutlass - 1972.

But then again the Buick Skylark had the curved rear bumper during that time frame.

Difficult to tell with the shadows and the grainy picture.

Always open for feedback.

Buddy had a '71 Skylark from about 1980 until quite recently, so I've sort of got it ingrained in my memory. The B-pillar looks wrong to me for a Skylark. But, as you note, it's not great quality, alas.

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/photo/1971/86060/86083.html -- 71 4-door Skylark from much the same angle; looks like it to me. Especially since http://www.collectorcarads.com/Picture1/cut.jpg -- 71 Cutlass, very different trim level (vinyl roof, etc.) but the taillights should be more visible if that's what it is.

So that's my vote. Worth precisely what you paid for it!

Awesome. Thanks for the details. With regard to "north bound" traffic in the 395 picture. Isn't the lane on the left south bound?

I did more checking on this photo of the traffic congestion on the Shirley Hi-Way. The photo was taken in October 1960, and the photo was taken by James J. McDonnell.

The photo was taken of the north bound traffic at King Street.

There have been many changes to that road. There was actually a Rail Road Crossing on the Shirley Hi-Way with Cross Bucks that stopped traffic so trains could pass. The crossing was near the Pentagon.

So do I. Because of the "S" in the diamond, that tag in your pic would have been on a State vehicle. The tag on the Alexandria Police car would have had a "M" in the diamond for Municipal.

From a previous post. BK Rootbeer stand was located between the 7-11 and Best Car Wash on Annandale Rd close to the Rt. 50 intersection. It later became an A&W Rootbeer stand then some fried fish place. Its now a kabob place. They used to sell 16-ounce rootbeer that came in a conical cup that was wide on the bottom narrow at the top.

It was there in the early 60's. Had a sign out front that was a mug of rootbeer. Not exactly sure when it closed. We lived off of Annandale rd. starting in 1960.

W4IOV is an Amateur (Ham) Radio call sign. This might have been the call for some group, i.e. Boy Scouts or a school Radio Club. Go to www.arrl.com and go to "call look-up" and it will tell you who the call is assigned to.

I notice looking at many of the old highway pictures lots of local highways appear to not have had paved shoulders like they do today, even though there was clearly room for them. Was this common? Were they typically made of gravel?

In addition to the small shoulders or none at all, you will notice the lack of many guardrails. The highway system in this country started to make real changes in road safety after the DOT started up in 1967

There were also safety upgrades made on automobiles that were required starting in 1967.

Hmm looks like the putput golf that was in the shopping center parking lot in Hybla Valley. Near where the Home Depot is now. Looks like a 1980's Chrysler parked there so I will say Hybla Valley shopping center 1985.

Looks like the outer loop of the Beltway just before it opened in Dec 1961. Just about a 1/2 a mile or so past the top of the hill is the exit for Van Dorn St.

I just love that picture. I never saw it before.

A long, long time ago we hocked a guitar and amp at that pawn shop. They gave us near to nothing and it was harder than hell to come up with the money to get 'em back. Almost as hard as it was to get my car out of the Shirlington impounding lot.

Oh, the good ole days!

It's been a long time but the last time I was down that way, that building... Wait a minute! That building is not the one I'm talking about! I'm thinking of the pawn shop at Spout Run and Lee Hwy. Good grief.

It sure was a lending/hocking era/area

And how about that motor lodge smack dab in the center around the circle?! I wonder if the cars pulled inside that building? I wish I could see it today. Too bad it wasn't preserved.

Imagine, enough room to have a motor lodge around that circle. Enough space between people... enough room to pull in and back out and turn around... and stop and ask a question. Enough room to be nice... It takes a lot of imagination. Were people ever nice?

Hard to believe that 50+ years ago, the speed limit was 65. Now, with better roads and better performing / safer vehicles, the speed limit remains artificially low @ 55MPH.
