I'll show this thread to my dad, haven't been too his place yet to do so. Great, but sad pic of the house before it's final destruction.

My dad grew up in Alexandria in the 60s and claims there was a restaurant located inside an exit ramp loop near Shirlington. Is this true? Were there more like that throughout FFX county? And more importantly, are there pictures???

There was a Hot Shoppe located in Shirlington Circle. There was another Hot Shoppe located between the northbound and southbound lanes of Shirley Highway just at the 14th Street Bridge. There was a tunnel under the highway from the Pentagon so that workers could walk to the restaurant. The tunnel is still there but may be blocked off now.

Building was there until around 1988 or so, if I recall correctly.

Housed a sporting goods store in mid 70's.

Across the way, between it and McDonald's...does anyone remember (or can anyone confirm the existence of) a record/head shop in the mid 70's, called LAGNAF, which allegedly stood for "let's get naked and _____"?

Did that really exist?

ITYM "Let's ALL Get Naked..."

If you Google "lagnaf mclean" (no quotes) you get enough hits to be convincing.

This photo was taken in the winter of 1967. The license plates on the 1964 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon, and the 1966/1967 Ford Fairlane are 1967 issue plates. 1968 plates were issued in the spring of 1968.

The car in the foreground is a 1964 Ford Galaxie 4 door.

This is the same intersection in 1996 with the McDonald's you are talking about. Which corner was LAGNAF on? Or was it the building past the Exxon and before the McDonald's?

Same intersection now at Old Dominion and Chain Bridge. Its amazing how small the intersection was then with one 4-way traffic light!

Okay, so which corner did the old house sit? I am going to guess it sat where the building is between the McD's and Exxon. Both roads were widened considerably, so it may have sat in the middle of the intersection that is there now.......

I could be wrong, but I believe the location where the old house sat is the current location of the BP Station 1423 Chain Bridge Road McLean, Va. 22101

This is a different location, and is not where the old house sat.

In the picture provided by Blackstripe, the street view from July 2015, that is, the old house sat where that 3 story brick building in the upper left corner now sits.

As I recall, the old house was owned by a real estate co, for their offices, and the new 3 story brick building was used again by that real estate co as their office?

So, the real estate company tore it down.

I'm pretty sure I sat in this traffic jamb last week, although my air quality was probably a little better! Now when you smell someone's exhaust all you have to do is look around and you can find the old car its coming from. Back then all the cars smelled awful, and with no AC you had to roll your windows down and stick to the pleather.

Great photo of the widening of the Beltway at RT 7. Photo was taken in the summer of 1973.

1953 aerial of Route 123 where Route 66 now crosses. Second picture is a closer shot with Route 66 overlay. When you drive over 66 on 123 you can see the way the old 123 (or rather, the land) (pre 66) dipped down and came right back up. You can see it especially if you happen to drive down Rosehaven on the north side of 66. I’ve been told there was a store at the bottom of that hill.

While it's not Fairfax County, I always found the area around Chain Bridge fascinating. Great views of the Potomac and the C&O Canal with the surrounding palisades on both sides of the river.

On Canal Road, there is an old railway bridge that carried freight trains between Silver Spring and Georgetown. This rail line, called the Georgetown Branch served several industries located along the Georgetown waterfront underneath the Whitehurst Freeway. The line headed west from Silver Spring through Bethesda before dropping south across River Road, McArthur Blvd, and Canal Road before turning east along the C&O canal into Georgetown. Most of the route is preserved today as the Capital Crescent Bike Trail.

I recently discovered online a collection of photos from the Georgetown branch railway line taken by a Maryland photographer over many years. Here's a link to that website:

http://sluggyjunx.com/rr/georgetown_branch/gallery/2004_11_29-wm_duvall_collection/index.html

The collection spans 3 pages beginning with the Silver Spring area and concluding at Georgetown.

The attached photo is from 1959 and shows a B&O freight traveling along with line with the Potomac and Chain Bridge in the background.

General map is west of route 123 and east of Jermantown Rd in Fairfax City, with I-66 to the north and route 50 to the south.

Picture shows block of Norman Avenue to the north, Burrows Avenue to the west, and Perry Street to the east.

A number of the houses are original to 1949 and 1950s.

I love old maps and seeing what's still standing!

You are right! How'd you guess? I love how there were so many woods north of the Town Of Fairfax into Oakton. So many woods and orchards and a trolley line too and so many motor courts and I love to see the cut through roads people made all over town. Cutting corners any corner you could cut. And I like how the roads would just run off into dirt parking lots at stops. No curbs. So how'd you guess the picture? Common sense deduction or a memory or recollection from seeing aerial before?

Thanks for playing. Did you ever hear or remember anything of a store at the bottom of the hill on chain bridge Rd (where 66 crosses now)?

No, don't remember a store in the area as I didn't live in that area. Found it by looking at old maps and using the coordinates. As for the old trolley lines, seems to me they should have kept them!!

Maps are truly a treasure and the young kids of today are missing a lot by not leaning how to use them. You haven't lived until you successfully refold a huge street map correctly for the first time! Obviously, I'm kidding, I use Google maps too! But looking at old maps and the streets, paths, and towns of yesterday, remind me of floor plans of a house--which also interest me. They're both building blocks of cities and towns and show history.

My pleasure is comparing old maps to current maps and finding the houses and building that are still standing and still being used and lived in. The history involved is fascinating.

Good greif, I worked at the esso run by Ed White at that intersection from 1969 to 1972. Next door was a Sunoco, across Old Dominion was an Amoco, and a Crown. I belonged to Sharon Masonic Lodge which was behind the Amoco.I left that area in the mid 70's and haven't seen it since. I NEVER would have recognized it from the photo. Boy give things 40 years and they really change.

I grew upin Mclean from 1958 until the mid seventies. I guess the writer was correct, you can't go home again. Or at least if you do you won't recognize the place.

I found it interesting how many different answers there were to where this intersection was...

The first picture shows the original picture from the 1990s posted on this forum.

The 2nd Picture shows the current view of the intersection (courtesy Google Maps) of VA-236 West at Olley Lane... note the two places I circled. One is the SR-787 route marker which is identical to the 1990s picture and second is the lane configuration on VA-236.

The 3rd picture shows Google street view from 2008. Notice the traffic signal configuration identical (two signals facing the driver, three facing left, two facing right) to the picture from the 1990s before the span wire signal was replaced with mast arms around 2010.

I think this is the old Hooters restaurant. Built sometime between 1938-1951. Shouldn’t this be preserved?

Fairfax Blvd and the Fairgrounds where Christ Lutheran is on Meredith. This is a 1937 aerial with a 1953 overlay faintly showing. The recently built FHS is on the 1937 photo. Look at all those woods.

What is the white building on the left side of picture #2, where the church is located on the SW corner of 236 and Olley currently? I have the vaguest memory of it from my childhood.

I dont see a white building. There was a gray house there next to the church Up above the hwy. .Its been Gone since about 1990. The White building up toward the top of Woodson Hill on the left is the "Woodson Farm House" Or Woodson House" It was the personnel office for the schools in the early 1970's and some for Janitors and Maintenance people.

WT Woodson was built on a farm, the farm barn is still there on the school grounds dept. There are also some maintenance shops there. The Woodson school property with the whole area combined Frost/Woodson/Grounds Dept is the largest plot of land for a public school in Va. Or at least it once was.

We had a farm on Telegraph Road, and I went to Potter's Hill School until 1924. After WWII we sold off the major part of the land near Beulah Street.

The first residents of KPW may have arrived 12,000 years ago. Projectile points dating back thousands of years have been found west of Ox Road, less than a thirty minute walk from KPW. The first Europeans in Fairfax were Captain John Smith and his crew. In 1608, they observed native settlements at the mouth of Pohick Creek on the Potomac River. By 1685, William Fitzhugh had acquired title to more than 24,000 acres in Fairfax. A portion of the western boundary of Fitzhugh’s estate, Ravensworth, forms the rear property lines of several homes on Richardson Drive.

I went to Kindergarden here in the 60's! I remember it so well, and I'm 55yrs old now! The reason I remember going there so well, is because I had my middle finger on my left hand chopped off in the hinge side of the men's bathroom door! There used to be slats on the wall that when we were walking down the hall going somewhere,we would slide our hands across them, and it would make a cool noise, that would sound like a motorcycle! In this case,we were going the the restroom, in a single file line, and I was making the motorcycle noise and then the line stopped, and I still had my hand on the wall, and thought my hand was inbetween 2 of the slats, but it was the hinge part of the Men's bathroom door! And when the door shut,it chopped off my little finger! OUCH! I'll never forget that day! The bad news,is that I am left handed!the good news, is that Fairfax hospital sewed it back on! Just a little memory from Holy Spirit!

Wow, how old is that super slide? I remember Lum's, but we always went to the one on Broad St in Falls Church. I loved their boiled in beer hot dogs when I was kid. I can remember there was once a skate park near Springfield Mall, but I've never seen or heard of that slide.

Let me guess - Dr. Trapp or Dr. Kelliher? Brandon Avenue, right?

My dentist was Kelliher and orthodontist was Wallert, same building. Remember the very groovy, modern optometrist office in the lobby's main level?

The Springfield HoJo restaurant, 1970s, I believe. Picture taken from the other side of the Commerce St. bridge than the motor lodge photo above. Before the bridge, the restaurant and motor lodge were next door to each other.

And the Hot Shoppes in Springfield, 1960s.

The picture of Kings Park West shows Lake Royal. During my time with the Fairfax Park Authority I was appointed the first manager of what was called Royal Lake Park. It was an amalgam of four park properties around the Public Works Pohick Dam site no. 4 Royal Lake. In 1980, it had absolutely NO facilities. There wasn't even a place for Me or the three seasonals under me to go to the restroom. We finally got a porta potty. The first Summer we were on the sidelines of the soccer field and our building was a plywood shed the soccer teams used to store their equipment. The following year we moved around to the other arm of the lake and actually had a phone line and a launch ramp (such luxury). Every night I had to transport the money and such to Lake Accotink, where I worked among many other places during the non Summer season. Finally in 1983 I was sent to Riverbend Park next to Great Falls National Park.

SuperTV was wireless and cableless. Our shop teacher at Lake Braddock showed us how to make a illegal super tv antenna out of a big coffee can and 8 dollars worth of parts from radio shack. Super tv had late night movies that showed boobies!

We always enjoyed a trip to Story Book Land. I agree that the crooked house was the best.

Back in the late 60s / early 70s, the place seemed really out in the country. Woodbridge and nearby towns were still relatively small and traffic was much less than today.

Here's a link to a Pinterest page with a good photo collection from the park.

Also, here's a map showing the different parts of the attraction.
