Must see for history buff. Go to this site:
http://spotsylvaniacw.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Satellite image indicating roads and landmarks relative to Waud sketch. The blue lines seen along Deacon Road demonstrate the Divisions formed by columns of Brigades. A newspaper account describes the area as having been cleared of most trees for the occasion as well as the bridging of water obstacles. This facilitated the fluid movement of the large masses of troops. The Review could not have been conducted in a smaller area than what is presented here. These observations are important toward the historical understanding of the site, otherwise lost within the residential development that has covered the once larger tracts.

Yup, I can confirm the Montegos were still at Edison in 81. If you could drive a Montego with a football field length hood, while sitting on the floorboard (as Mercurys and Fords typically had low seats), you could drive anything.

The Battle of Fair Oaks took place east of Richmond (about where Richmond's airport is today).

Today you would be on the Wash Post for that because your back seat passengers would be posting it on facebook from their phones and it would be public knowledge in 15 minutes. Totally different back then- everybody didn't post what they were doing every 5 minutes. It was easy to "disappear" for a couple hours. What a scam that guy had, getting paid to teach driving while actually at home... likley getting some nookie from the missus.. or possibly mistress.

The actual drivers test at Grovedale was way easier. Moms Corolla was a lot smaller than a Montego. The test was a loop. Out of Grovedale, down Beulah, up Fleet, rt on Franconia, back to Grovedale. And there was about 1/64th of the traffic on Franconia as there is today. No biggie.

I was about to say it looked like Rose Hill. Wow 1965- a little before my time. The store at the opposite end of the photo would have been Grants. I think that is a Fiat 500 in the parking lot, whats old is new again.

Yup, I totally would have mistaken that for Fair oaks Mall area not down by Richmond. I didnt know there was another Fair Oaks in the state. OTOH I didn't know there was another Rose Hill outside of Fairfax until recently. Apparently there is a more famous Rose Hill in Lee County, just about as far away from Fairfax as you can get in the state.

I took drivers ed/behind the wheel fall of'79. Lake Braddock had the Torino's/Montego's and one Concord DL. I do remember going in front of a Judge with a whole bunch of other new drivers (Falls Church HS maybe), but don't remember going back to DMV to get the actual license.

I got a traffic ticket before I got my license. Arlington. 1978. Took parents' car for a joy ride. Was stoned out of my mind. Driving north on Kirby heading for Chain Bridge. Didn't make one of those turns and landed in the embankment. Stumbled out once I woke up. Managed to hitch a ride home. Left the car with the grill stuck in the dirt and the front wheels dangling in mid-air. The next thing I remember is my mom telling me the cops are at the door. "Yes, officer?" "Did you blah, blah, blah?" "No officer". We did that a couple more times around and then they left. When I turned around, my mom said "look in the mirror". When I did, there was dry blood around my nose and on my face. "Great!" I laughed sarcastically. What they must have been thinking. Probably, "Good thing she's off the road".

And once you got your piece of plastic with your picture on it to drive, you got another piece of plastic with a number on it so you could park... on school property at least.

What was left of the "New" Starlite Swimming pool across from Picket Shopping Center along Rt 236 in Fairfax. Pic taken In 1990.

This was the big new pool and had a 3 meter diving board which is left to see. the pool is filled in with dirt. The older one was beside it and was smaller. The old one was there in 1970 and went back before that. This big pool was built about 73. I never went in the pool saw it from the street looked at it a couple times, It was too expensive for a young working man .

The pool was apart of the Starlite Golf driving range where long haired youth picked up balls one night about 1974 or so , and hurled them against the Frost school breaking out a New Record of busted windows for "kicks" . Maybe they drove them with golf clubs also.. FORE..! Weed like smoking material was thought to be involved..

The Mighty Midget an Icon in Leesburg in 1990 .. Its still there but fancied up and part of some other place. There was one once in Alex Va. My boss's father had it once long ago maybe early 50's. They were made from WW2 surplus airplane metal. Nothing like a good burger from a Midget Kitchen...

the BMX track yes I remember that. They had a lot of races there after the golf course went. There was a Scuba Shop at Picket and they had classes at that pool until about 1985 or so. That's about when it closed.

I think it was Starlit (no "e").

Not sure, but I seem to remember "Starlit Fairways". Might have been the name of the driving range?

This photo was taken in the summer of 1971. The police car is a 1967 Ford Custom, and it had a 390 4 barrel. The car that was pulled over is a 1960 Plymouth Valiant.

That info coupled with the construction timeline of I-66, puts this in mid 1971.

The Valiant did not become a Plymouth Valiant until 1961. Valiant was a separate Brand in 1960. I wonder why the Valiant in the pic got stopped? Not likely for speeding with a slant 6 under the hood.

A buddy of mine was FCPD back then and he drove an unmarked black Ford with the 428 police Interceptor. It may have been a '68 though, I'm not sure. The '67 were available with the 428.

Never understand the people living in this area. Even today it seems like people don't want to allow the building of new roads, but yet people gripe about the traffic conditions. The motto for Virginia should be "Lovers of Traffic," since no one does anything to improve road conditions. Unbelievable. VDOT should learn from the Texas Department of Transportation. Go to Texas and you will see the most advanced highway system in the country.

It's not hard to understand. People like to gripe about traffic but they don't want to pay to improve it.

While Texas has no state income tax, the real estate taxes are astronomical...number 5 in the country. Tx ranks right up there with New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois and other communist states.

I think you should go back to Texas, that would help our traffic situation.

Yeah, A kid I knew in high school had a used 67 ford custom cop car and it was a 428 with factory 4 barrel. Of course we pulled the dual manifolds and put headers and a pair of hush thrush mufflers on it then we put bondo over all the rust and painted it "midnight blue" in the Lake braddock auto body shop class.

Most of the marked units came with 390 4V motors, and the unmarked units came with 390's , 428's.

In 1967 there was a 240 CID 6 cylinder option with a 3 on the tree tranny in the Custom. A 289 2V & 4V, a 352 4V, 390 4V, and the 428 4V.

If the car was a Galaxie 500 the 428 came with 7 Liter badging.

That old Valiant had a 170 CID slant six. This was before the 225 CID.

About that tanker: he couldn't have been going fast. It looks like it happened just after he straightened up from coming off the ramp. Was it a spark from the tire blowing? Can that happen?

The 240 I-6 and three on the tree was standard equipment on the '67 Ford Custom. Everything above that was an option.

On some makes EVERYTHING was an option, even a heater. I had a '63 Valiant that came from the factory with no heater. Of course I soon cobbled one together with junk yard parts. Classified car ads often listed "r&h" meaning radio and heater. Many, many cars came without radios, but my Valiant was one of the few (around here) that I ever saw that came without a heater.

Back in 1963 if you had a car that needed a heater, radio, or plastic seat covers you took your car down to Duke Street in Alexandria, and saw the folks at Morris Katz.

Perhaps the one that was at the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed? Catty-cornered from the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, for a long time it was a Bob's Big Boy and is now a drug store.

Also home of the million dollar bus stop.

The timestamp at the lower right corner of the photo reads 08 15 97

I can't place the intersection, but it is in the older eastern part of Fairfax County. Annandale perhaps?

That is the intersection of Leesburg Pike and Carlin Springs Rd in Bailey's Crossroads. Right across from where the original Roy Rogers was.

The Texaco station is now a Shell.

From what I recall, the Ramp had too steep an angle, it was redone but still has a caution sign on it for tipping..

I don't recall there being an Arthur Treacher's down there. However, the original Roy Rogers was there starting in '68 which is now a McDonald's. To the right of the intersection in the photo is currently an REI, Gold's Gym and Vitamin Shoppe. The long standing MVC store is also across the street from where that Texaco station was.

Guinea is several lights before this and you wouldn't be able to see Woodson from Guinea.
