Wasn't there a Viiage Inn near Cameron Station (sort of near Landmark Shopping Center)? Maybe that's it?

It was the Iron Skillet, a good French place, for a LONG time (next to Giffords RIP).

It became Daks and is now the German Store. A long time waiter at the IS was running around in shorts at Daks, I guess he was grandfathered in as an employee...

The U.S. Army was segregated at the time Camp Humphreys was established and remained so until 1948. When the camp was established during WW1, several thousand black soldiers were posted there to assist with construction.

I was serving my internship in Great Falls in 1976, The house I lived in only had electricity in one half. I borrowed several of my mothers antique oil lamps to light the other half. I bought kerosene at Bucks, his kero pump was literally just inside the front door. We also feasted on Thelmas Ice cream about a block to the left of the photo above. Good days those.

That truck has side marker lights. So, it's a '68 or later.

Is that the place that used to serve homemade ice cream? When I was a teen working construction our crew chief insisted we stop there whenever we were in the Great Falls area we had to stop for ice cream.

That was a Crown gas station, and it was when it was full service. Price of the Regular Leaded gas was 94 cents a gallon.

I see a 79' AMC Eagle and a 78' Dodge Aspen, and a 74' Toyota Corona, last a 78' Chevy Malibu.

Here's one of Arlington's original dive restaurants/bars. Back in the late 70's I got a hack license in Arlington and drove Arlington Yellow and Red Top cabs (they were both owned by the same company). If I remember correctly, Whitey's was popular with the Red Top drivers. The Yellow Cab drivers hung out more at another dive restaurant on Wilson Blvd near N. Fillmore or N. Garfield. I don't recall the name of that place, but it's long been gone as Clarendon got all spruced up and rebuilt.

Forgot to mention, Whitey's was located on Washington Blvd. about 1/2 block off of Pershing Drive. Last time I was by there, the building remained and still looked like a dive - but no longer named Whitey's.

I know this has been mentioned before but I don't think a photo was posted. In any event, here is a photo of the Kann's department store in Arlington's Virginia Square. It looks like it was taken in the 1950s and the view is from Fairfax Drive.

When I was in elementary school, my family shopped here regularly during the early to mid sixties. They had a relatively large monkey cage, painted and decorated like a circus wagon, in the children's shoe department that held two or three monkeys whose antics fascinated us each time we visited. There was a snack bar on the first floor called the "Kannteen" that was sort of like a soda fountain. The other thing I remember about the building is that they had operators in each elevator taking you from floor to floor.

The store closed, I think, in the early 70s and the building eventually became George Mason's Arlington Campus housing the law school and a few other graduate programs. In the 80s when I was earning my masters, I took classes in the building.

The second photo from Google Steetview shows how the building appears today. It's hidden partially by some trees but I think you can make it out.

Here's another view of Virginia Square, taken from a little further down Fairfax drive. It shows the shopping center itself with the Kann's building in the background.

It's hard to see from this angle, but I believe the store on the corner of the center was a People's drug. The store with the canopy in front was the Lamplighter Restaurant which operated there for many years.

Based on the cars in the photo, it looks like it was taken somewhere between 1968 and 1973.

There used to be a plumbing supply place along there somewhere. They (thankfully) carried replacement heads for the zone valves we had in the heating system back then. I think Dominion Datsun was up the road a ways to the west as well, but I might be misremembering that. Either way, building the Orange Line changed a lot of things. Did the Lamplighter move from there out to Fairfax when the digging started? There was a place called that on Jermantown Road between 50 and 29, but it's gone now as well.

Photo is circa 1965

The plates on the 62 Pontiac, and the Jag are 1965 issue.

The 1964 Ford Galaxie is going to other way.

I saw the tag on the Jaguar but the reasons I was thinking 1968 or later were that the Volkswagon Microbus appears to be the 2nd generation which came out in '68. Also, take a look at what I think might be a Red Top cab next to the microbus. It's hard to tell, but it looked to me like a later model.

Look at the bumpers on the 2 VW Buses, 1967 was the last year VW used that style bumpers on any of the vehicles produced for export to the US.

The 1968 plates were black with white letters. The cab looks to be an AMC Ambassador.

Looks like the service road right in front of the nursing home that is still there, lots of additions to the building itself.

Is Columbia Pike only two lanes or is the median very wide?

I used to ride horses where Mason District Park is located now (across Columbia Pike from Sleepy Hollow) and sang with my girl scout troop at the nursing home, mid 60s or so.

I think it was fairly new then but of course its getting to be fifty years ago that the singing happened.

1964 or 1965. Final homes in Sleepy Hollow Woods yet to be built next door. You can see they are just dirt lots in this photo. That neighborhood was finished by late 1965. Also, another clue is newer addition of nursing home next door not yet built - that happened circa 1970ish.

It was renamed the Washington Star right before it folded.

When I worked for them in the 60s (and for many years before that), it was The Evening Star. Only on Sunday was it a morning paper.

Oh, and in the mid 60s, the Sunday Star ran a COLOR photo above the fold on the front page every Sunday!

Color photos in newspapers was very rare back then, but the Star ran one every Sunday. We didn't get the Post so I don't know if the color pics were in response to the Post doing it or if the Star was being innovative.

Don't need no stinkin Youtube. I have three copies of the last Star.

Got a few copies of the July '69 landing on the moon.

And at least one copy of the November 22,23,24 1963 Stars. That was an awful weekend.

The Post in the morning and the Star/Star-News in the afternoon. The latter was the only way to get the out-west baseball box scores from the night before.

I also delivered the Star when I was a kid. It was Sunday mornings and the rest of the week was in the afternoon. I didn't deliver the Post because I didn't want to get up early every morning. I could handle just Sunday mornings, plus I got to see all the drunks coming home from Saturday night.

Fantle's simply bought what was left of Dart Drug in 1987, but the chain went bankrupt themselves in 1989, and that was that. Bud Fantle himself had previously tried to resuscitate People's Drug, but he failed at that as well. The parent company of CVS acquired People's in 1990 and rebranded them all in 1994. Most Dart Drug stores went down the same CVS road over the same time frame. Drug Fair had been sold in 1981 to Gray Drug which was itself owned by Sherwin-Williams, They sold Gray Drug to Rite-Aid in 1987.

Remember going to Dart Drug on Sundays when the sales started. There was always that little old lady with a cart full of items that required price checks, and then she wrote a check to pay - Checks required a manager approval.

If someone paid with a credit card they had to look up the number in the book to see if the card was "Good".

I just wanted to pay cash for my 12 packs of Bud, and go home with my parts that I purchased next door at Trac Auto.

Bud Was usually on sale for $3.59 a 12 pack.

This is how we like to remember it. The reality was somewhat different. JFK was not popular in large portions of the US in 1963 and the mourning was far from universal. What you didn't have back in the 1960s though were idiots going on the media cheering about it.

That was the Tornado that tore up WT Woodson HS back in April of 1973, then it hit the shopping center. There was the Sears Catalog store, and the Ben Franklin, and the famous school bus into the ABC Store.

Woodson got hit twice(different years) the first tornado tore up the football bleachers. About 1979 the roof of the school got torn off.

I believe it is either the Turnpike or Pickett shopping center at Picket and 236 right after the woodson tornado JI.

Yes that is right - Before Fair City was built, and Comstock was still under construction.

Does anyone have any photographs of the former railroads crossings at Burke Road and Burke Lake Road? Or heck, even just the forme alightments of those roads would be even better.

Thanks.

I don't have any pictures. The second floor of the Fairfax City library branch has a large collection of local history books. You might find something there.

When you are talking about former alignments, you may need to specify when. Burke Road from just west of Rolling Road to the railroad tracks beyond Burke Lake Road is actually the former railroad right of way from the 1800s. I believe the former train station is now an insurance broker's office. East of Rolling Road the tracks were located north of their former location and to a large extent follow the bike path from Lake Accotink Park to Rolling Road. The railroad was relocated to its current location around 1900 as part of a project to double track the line and reduce grades and curves.

Burke Lake Road crossed the train tracks just east of the shopping center (the one with Spartan's in it) until sometime in the late 70s/early 80s. The cul-de-sac that ends in front of Lake Braddock High School across BLR was where Burke Lake Road was formerly located heading down to the train tracks.

Burke Road didn't end at Burke Lake Road, go over the train overpass and then pick up again on the other side of the tracks. It was one road that crossed the tracks at some point.

I think this is the alignment Joke Insurance is looking for.

The Virginia Room of the Fairfax City Library is a good place to look for Fairfax history.

As posted way earlier in this thread, were these two videos:

Video of a former Southern unit crossing over the former at-grade crossing for Burke Road, circa 1982: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRXcCwvn4ZM

Video of a former Southern unit crossing over the former at-grade crossing for Burke Lake Road, circa 1984: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDk53PIkBwQ

While the videos are nice, I was looking for more than just those.

Was this bridge around before or after Kings Park?

Kings Park being developed probably marked the end of the bridge since traffic increased a lot after all those houses were put in there.

Went to the Keyhole Inn in the winter of 1995-96 maybe. It was cold and damp out when I went in. When I came back out, there was four inches of snow on the ground. Never went back.

And here's a picture of a car on the Great Falls and Old Dominion, probably from about the same time frame. The GF&OD ran from Georgetown to Great Falls, providing speedy mail service and doing a brisk tourist business in the summer while also hauling local farm and dairy products into the city. Old Dominion Drive now runs along the former GF&OD right-of-way. The car shown is pulling out of the station at Jewell. That dusty path at the right is now Rock Spring Road.

We moved into Cardinal Forest in 1967 - when Keene Mill Road was dirt past Rolling Road. I have a vague recollection of the old trestle bridge on Rolling, so did some websurfing and found this:

Replacement bridge finished in 1969......

And this:
