There was a driveway close to what is now Zion Drive and Guinea Road. Historical Aerials as it crossing the railroad tracks and ending somewhere in the Coffer Woods neighborhood. I think the house is now community owned. Is that correct?

On the note of Zion Drive and Guinea Road, anyone know the history of the house located at the NW section of that intersection?

And last, for now, Historical Aerials shows a house at the intersection of Burke Road and Lake Braddock Drive, next to the pond there. Was that a residential house or something else?

Anyone have old pictures of Fairfax High school inside/outside? Kids who go there now don't believe there were yellow/orange lockers and full-wall chalkboards.

When Guinea was realigned from Behind Target to infront of it (Overpass), it crossed at that point, but stayed the same course. There is however a road from Sideburn that was cut off by the tracks, it went up Premier Drive or past the Burke Center Conservancy Maintenance yard and Boat Storage and went through the lake, to Oak Leather Drive from what I recall. That CC is the Commons Community Center, there is the Woods CC also off Coffer Woods Rd.

This has probably already been answered but this is east of Cherrydale and right before you get into Rossyln. I think it was right after that furniture store on the right in the white building that looked like it was built into the hill.

The furniture store was Colony House. Went down a few years ago.

Here’s the article with the pumpkin picture.
https://iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/joel-sternfeld-mclean-virginia-december-1978/
Joel Sternfeld; McLean, Virginia; December 1978
On the cover of American Prospect, Joel Sternfeld’s ode to roadside America, was a ghoulish photo. A fireman shops for a pumpkin as the farmhouse — whose fire presumably brought him to this very acres — burns in the background. Its fiery destruction perfectly complemented the wintry leaves, the spoilt pumpkins, and from the foreground, with his hands tightly clasped upon a prized possession, the orange-clad firefighter: an American Nero.

It was not a staged Leibovitzian spectacle. Joel Sternfeld indeed witnessed the fire while driving his Volkswagen through McLean, Virginia. However, if there is one thing the readers should take from Iconic Photos, it is that photographs lie too. In this case, the fire was a controlled training exercise and the firefighter was on a break.

But this fact wasn’t even clear to the reviewers of his works (here, here). When the photo was published, firstly in Life, and then in many other magazines and exhibitions, it was only with pithiest of captions: “Joel Sternfeld; McLean, Virginia; December 1978”. The photographer himself reveled in this ambiguity; in a 2004 interview where the Guardian called him the chronicler of “the sinister curiousness of modern America”, he confided:

“Photography has always been capable of manipulation. Even more subtle and more invidious is the fact that any time you put a frame to the world, it’s an interpretation. I could get my camera and point it at two people and not point it at the homeless third person to the right of the frame, or not include the murder that’s going on to the left of the frame. You take 35 degrees out of 360 degrees and call it a photo. There’s an infinite number of ways you can do this: photographs have always been authored.”

The last I had heard "they" were planning on turning it into a boutique hotel, a rather odd place for it though. Haven't been on that stretch of Lee Highway lately to know what's going on with the building.

Keep it going folks....OKAY, Sleepy needs some help. I remember when Loehmann's Plaza was being built and frequented it forever, but I do not remember this spot. ANY pics or recollections would truly be appreciated. Given the size needed for this type of TIKI spot it was probably located where Giacamo's was later. I guess Diamond Head had Arlington and MD locations also. Thanks.

Sleepy -

Not a pic, and I don't really remember it (guess I wasn't into Tiki places), but this at least provides an answer regarding the Loehmann's Diamond Head location. The address gives it away. It wasn't the Giacomo's space, but rather on the other side in the corner by the movie theaters. The spot more recently was a restaurant called Flying Buffalo, and now is a dollar store. There were also several other locations, including Bethesda, Georgetown, Woodbridge, and Fredericksburg.

Put up on the Fairfax County Police Facebook page today...

The Fairfax County Police Headquarters in 1960 and today

The caption:
It's Throwback Thursday and today we feature the old Fairfax County Police Headquarters in 1960 and how is stands today in 2015. 55 years ago it was the heartbeat of the department where 911 calls were answered, reports were held, detectives worked, etc.
The building is currently used as our records room where our residents come for fingerprinting, copies of traffic accidents, criminal records checks and more. Do you know where it is?

Of course 55 years ago there was no 911. I think I remember the emergency number was 691-2233, and non emergency was 691-2131.

There’s a shot of the old water tower! Someone was looking for that a while back. (Fairfax County Police Headquarters in 1960), That’s a pretty-tall antenna. Is that on the roof? I think it’s a nice looking building, even after all these years.

I like looking at these past view/present view type pics.
I got the top photo courtesy of Bob Robb. I got the bottom one off of Google maps.
Top pic looks to be about 1981 or 1982 because Fair Oaks Mall is in the back on the left and it opened in 1980.
This is the old intersection of US Route 50 and West Ox Road, back when there was an intersection.
Route 50 now runs under it. This is the view looking south on West Ox Road.
I lived within a stones throw of here for 21 years in Penderbrook. 1992-2013. Now I live down the road in Fair Lakes. Used to cross the bridge in the bottom pic almost every day twice a day for 21 years.
That is the old Pender Methodist Church in the distance on the left, which by this time (and since 1971) was the Pender Veterinary Clinic.

You can see Fair Oaks Mall to the left and behind the church. The tall building in the top picture and this picture is 4050 Legato Road. I worked in that building and its twin 4000 Legato Road for years when AMS had both buildings.
The church was razed (shame) when they widened 50 and made that part of West Ox Road an overpass. But the doctor saved the cupola and it now sits behind the modern building now housing the Pender Veterinary Centre.
You can see it from the exit ramp going down to route 50 eastbound off of West Ox Road northbound. Old photo courtesy of Bob Robb.

The top picture was taken after 1986 because the Blue Ford pick-up was the 1986 to 1991 body style.

Thanks. I don't drive, so I don't know much about car model years.
I knew it was sometime in the 80's. By the time I moved there in 1992 all this was gone.
Here's two more pics of that same area taken at the same time courtesy of Bob Robb.

So what is the building in the center of the photo? Isn't that were the Fair Oaks movie theater was? And the buildings in the background do not look like the Marriott and the Wachovia Buildings.

The building in the center of the first picture is an office building still there.
To the left of it is the Marriott, which was a Holiday Inn. It was remodeled.
In the second picture in the middle is the Fair Oaks Theaters, now Waterford.

Dad owned the Bratwursthaus and also Simpson's Sporting Goods both in Loehmann's Plaza. Oh the stories we could tell! Great memories there and many good friends we spent so much time there with.

My grandfather worked at the Skyline Esso service station sometime during the 50's maybe 60's. He kept some old hubcaps in this box. The box is Labeled "SKYLINE ESSO SERVICE CENTER FAIRFAX VA". If anyone would like this cool old box in excellent shape, please email me and it will be yours. It's survived this long. Hate to recycle it now. Haha.

Thanks
Chris

That's right before this area boomed and was ruined by libtards and the police state we now live in was created.

Nice to see blacks and whites mingling together and smiling. Democrats just couldn't stand for that and races have never been more divided, at least on the Democrat side.

This is one of the few threads that isn't tainted with silly political rhetoric.
Please refrain from adding.

This part of the comment isn't as obnoxious as it seems. Lady Bird Johnson's visit was before the Fair Housing Act was passed, and the idea of a new suburban development that was integrated from the start was novel in the 1960s when Reston was being developed.

Circa 1963 looks to be the time frame. Up near where the Grand Union was.

Black plates with white letters were on EVEN years, so the plates on the Chevy Van, and the 1963 Chevy Biscayne Station Wagon are 1964 plates.

Not just a Chevy van, a Chevy Greenbrier van! An adaptation of the Corvair with an air-cooled 6 cyl boxer engine in the rear. The pick-up truck version, the Rampside, was really cool and a rip-off of the similar VW pick-up.

I bet Jim Mckay either sold or loaned (advertising deal) WEEL the Greenbrier.

Really enjoying the old pictures of Fairfax County. I'm on the Board of Historic Vienna (the Freeman Store and Museum on Church Street in Vienna). We're looking for old pictures of Vienna - not necessarily posed pics of family members - and pictures associated with farming in Vienna or environs for our upcoming exhibit on that subject, as well as old buildings, businesses, and so forth. If you have any you'd like to share, please let us know. We're not looking for one that have already been published - rather the ones in that old photo album on the shelf in the attic or basement. We're also looking for antique farm equipment - not "huge" stuff, but the kind that could be used in the exhibit. The Freeman Store is open noon to 4PM, Wednesday thru Sunday. Lots to see and buy there. If you'd like to contact us, information is at www.historicviennainc.org.

Thanks,

Mike

Reston used to look so modern and space age back in the 70's.

North Shore Drive is such a dump now. Waste of waterfront.

As I remember it was across the street from Logan Ford. I think it opened mid 70s. That picture is a village inn but I don't think it is the Springfield location. I could be wrong though.

If I'm not mistaken the Village Inn in Springfield is now the El Paso Mexican restaurant. There's another one located on Columbia Pike near Bailey's X Roads. Not sure what in there now

Thanks for the information on the Springfield location, I'm thinking the El Paso is the correct place. The building in the background of the picture was confusing me.

The Baileys Xroads Village Pizza is now a Mexican place (big surprise) on the right hand side of the road as you head towards Rte. 7. Next to a laundrymat before getting to the light at the shopping center with the Trader Joe's.

I agree, The brick place on the hill throws me off. Wheres the hill today and that place? Probably a Pizza joint but not Springfield. That Village Inn building does have a high speed look to it like the Mexican Food place. Will have to take a closer look next time I pass by.

Not the Springfield location in the photo. Probably had several around since it was a franchise. El Paso still has the original fireplace in the middle of the dining area. I remember that the Baileys location did as well since I used to go there in my younger days. Across the street on 7 was a steak place something skillet which was pretty good.
