On the surface. The others are still there under the surface. They blew them up as much as they could. And the ships did not come up river above the Key. The docks are all where they were and still are in dilapidated condition below the Key, but they are fixing them up with a nice park along there near Wash Harbor. The rocks directly across from Wash Harbor had soldiers standing there during the Civil War. Go inside the Sequoia restaurant, they have a number of good photos of the bridge and the river.

Also if you ride the Metro to Va/DC The Orange line, you pass under the river just about Wash Harbor.. Down Under.

You can say that again. I hadn't been up the Anacostia in probably 15 years or so until last week. I wanted to see what had become of Tommy Long's marina. I hung out there a lot in the 70's. I had heard that the Park Service had kicked Tommy out years ago and I wanted to see what is there now.

I'm approaching the Sousa Bridge and I start getting depth readings of 2 feet and it wasn't even low tide! I'd say it was mid (ebb) tide with lower water to follow. I used to run a 60' Matthews that drew 5 feet up to Tommy's years ago. I wouldn't want to try that now.

Not wanting to stick my current (much smaller) boat her in the mud the other day, I chickened out and turned around.

Looking east down Columbia Pike, close to the intersection with 236. Former Fuddrukkers on the right. Light is the one at Backlick/Maple and Columbia Pike.

Yes, Blanche gets the prize. Not much of a prize, because it was too easy. But a prize nonetheless. Here's a view of approximately the same location from 2012. The building on the far left is still standing.

I cruised by those rocks on Roosevelt Island in the boat today and thought of the pic in this thread.

There were young people climbing around on them today. I wonder if they knew that Civil War soldiers once frolicked in the very same spot.

Not likely I suppose. They probably have never heard of the Civil War. But they certainly know all about Facegram and Instabook and all that nonsense.

That white building with the red door and the "sale/lease" sign in the photo of Annandale used to be the Annandale Boys' Club office and a law office. I believe the guy who ran the Boys' Club also ran the law office. The Boys' Club used to sponsor kids' soccer but I think the FPYC ultimately proved more popular.

I wonder where exactly in the Kamp Washington junction that Lord Fairfax Motor Inn was? I'm trying to remember if I ever saw a remnant of that stone wall to serve as a clue to it's location. I'm from Arlington and traveling out past the circle was something we might do on a road trip. Needless to say, we never ventured that far into the woods too often. No recollection of all the motor lodges along 29, even if I am that old.

If the Lord Fairfax was on the side of the RT 29 211 50 intersection where Kinney Shoes, and Mister Donut was there was also a Sinclair Gas Station there as well.

Or was it located where the Super Giant, Drug Fair, Robersons 5 & 10 were years ago?

There was the Franks Garden Center that was a Grand Union Super Market up till about 1974.

Yes the Sinclair closed down and became a Penguin Feather head shop.

The ABC store closed down for a new location, and became a restaurant of some kind that lost money. One night in the late 70's it "Caught" fire and burned, while the owner sat over at the Mister Donut and drank coffee as he watched it burn down.

There was also a Safeway store near the ABC store that closed in 1972 and became a Bill's Carpet Store.

There was the Hi-Gear store, The ESSO Station in the middle of the intersection, and Goldies Ice Cream Stand where the CVS is now.

Just wondering, was it Bachelors II? It burned , just after a friend did some electrical work, he was on pins and needles but it was not the fault, Some say it was torched. It was a good place to go back then lots of girls, like a night club but I don't remember any bands, maybe a DJ.

Don't think so. Do you know where the Vitamin store is at Kamp Washington? If you're standing at it's front door looking at the road, that's where the picture was taken from that is 50/29 East running away from you. Notice how it winds left and up. The little store on the right has the right turn off 236 onto 50/29E running behind it. Thats where T-mobile is now. If you look how 50/29E turns, you can picture the now car dealer up on the right where that tall building is; and you can see the neighborhood behind that whole corner. How the neighborhood cut-through goes up a steep hill beside the now tire store off 236 and runs out by Burger King on 50/29. I also see the stone wall of the Lord Fairfax Motor Lodge (where Kinneys would later be, I guess). And that building closer to the intersection is what will later be the Penquin Feather. So cool. See it?

That large white building in the far right of the picture is where Weber Tire is. Before it was Weber Tire it was an ice house.

Hi blanche!

Im not sure about that one. I moved here in 1968. This is the info I got with the picture,

"The original section of The Springfield Shopping Center, circa 1953/early 1954 (now Tower Shopping Center). The two story section was added to the far left and the former corner drug store unit was added to the right at the corner of Brandon and Bland. (courtesy The Springfield Independent/The Nancy & Arthur Hughes Family Archives)"

I agree with Blanche. The picture above of 1950's shopping center looks more like the attached picture, not what is now the Tower Shopping Center on the corner of Bland and Brandon Streets. Attached picture is the small shopping center on Backlick Road that houses Moe's Peyton Place.

If correct, this small shopping center housed the first location of Springfield's library back in the early 1960's. Can't remember if it was called Richard Byrd Library back then. I believe the library was located in what is now Moe's Peyton Place, but could have been the store front to the far left. To the far right used to be a Five and Dime store that sold all kinds of junk that a small kid begged their parents for!

Lord Fairfax Inn Motor Court stood were Fairfax Hyundai now stands. Some semblance of it stood there in the early 80's before it was torn down for a GMC/Ponitac dealership that turned into Hyundai store. I remember it well because I nearly got into a head-on collision right in front of it late one night coming over that rise.

Right along Rt 29 . Next to Hunters Lodge and the drive in was about where Costco was up West Ox a bit. Those old wooden sidewalks held many a silver coin down in the dirt ,where they fell and went thru the cracks, long after Va City was gone. A treasure trove for metal detector folk.

There are a number of structural differences between the building that houses Moe's Peyton Place and the one depicted in the older photo above. The older building has five store units separated by evenly spaced brick columns. The building with Moe's is wider, has more spaces, and has brick columns that are not all evenly spaced. The Moe's structure also has some large windows on the right side, while the older building had nothing but a solid wall.

On the other hand, if you look at the portion of the Tower Center shown in the picture below, which faces Brandon Avenue in the block south of Bland and north of Old Keene Mill, you'll see that there are five store spaces and that the doors are arranged similarly to the old photo. To the left of this segment is another portion of the center that includes a two story section, like the caption says. There also is another section to the right that goes to the corner of Brandon and Bland, again consistent with the caption. Finally, if you look at aerial views of this area, there are delineations between the roofs of these sections, which could be evidence that they were added on at different times. Given all of this, I believe the pictured section of the current Tower Center is the original portion depicted in the older photo.

That's the two-story section, alright. The Baskin-Robbins store still occupies the same unit it did back then. If you look at an aerial view, however, there is an angled connecting section that joins the original structure to the two-story addition. You can see it angling off in your first picture. I can't tell for sure if the third picture is the same shopping center or not, but it could be a view looking back toward the original structure from in from of the two-story addition. The cars in the foreground would be parked along the angled portion.

The sign in the far background of the third picture also looks like the earlier location of Fischer's Hardware, which would make sense if the photo was taken from the angle I described.

Well, the rail line map extends to well outside of the DC metro area and it doesn't include many of the actual rail lines that were operating passenger and freight service here circa 1920. That's mostly because this is the first draft of Dave Edmondson's most recent rail-mapping project. He plans to add the missing lines of the W&OD, B&O, Southern, Pennsylvania, etc. in future versions.

The Leesburg station on the W&OD in 1951. One of the lines as yet missing from the map.

Bailey's Crossroads, 1937

Thanks! That's one of the best aerials I've seen of Baileys. Recognize Bailey's School where my dad went. He told me they used to find a ton of civil war mini balls on the grounds.

Where did you find this and do you have more?

Curly's Garage on 29 N across from Fashion Square Mall?

I think I remember that place, 2 stories on the inside, had live music...kind of cool, if I'm not mistaken, it is now a single story "fast casual" type place.

Anyhow, what was your post in reference to?

I didn't see any other mention of the place in the recent thread...help a brother out!
