@Dave H...Herby's Ford was on Duke St...My folks were debating between a new 1968 Country Squire (which we drove @Herby's) and a 1968 Impala Wagon...which they ended up buying at Rosenthal's Chevrolet in Arlington...right off the showroom floor. That intrigued me as a wee youngster how we were going to get it out of the showroom. :)

There was a store there but it wasn't a Best store. The only Best store in Falls Church area back in the 1970s/1980s was on Gallows Road in Merrifield location (Falls Church mailing address) where the current Merrifield Gold's Gym and an Asian supermarket is now located. My dad used to take my sister and me to that Best when we were kids on Saturdays. Spent lots of my allowance money there buying cassette tapes and other stuff. Brings back good memories.

I remember that YMCA on Little River Turnpike! It was located in an old white farmhouse, not far from Woodson HS. In the 1960s they had marksmanship classes in the basement, where I earned some sort of certificate. I can't remember if they used .22s or BB/pellet guns. Either way, fat chance of that happening today! Not PC, you know.

Could anyone who has old Fairfax County or Arlington County car dealership pictures who wouldn't mind sharing them please post them. I would love to see some of these old pictures. Especially if anyone has any pictures of Bill Page Pontiac back in the late 1970s. Bill Page was supposed to have the largest selection of Trans Ams, would love to see old pictures with rows of Trans Ams.

Many Thanks!

Dave,

Templeton Oldsmobile was located on Route 7 and Tyco Road in Vienna, VA (Tysons Corner) VA. The dealership sold Oldsmobiles and added Yugos to the lineup in mid-1980s for a few years. By the 1990s they became a Dodge dealership as Oldsmobile sales started fading. Eventaually it closed its doors. I worked at Templeton Oldsmobile back in the 1980s.

The Audi Tysons Corner dealership is located on the same property as the former Templeton Oldsmobile. They renovated the main sales building and it still stands today with the same shape as the 1977 picture you posted. See attached picture of how the building looks today.

Wingnut,

Oh wow, the State Theater in Falls Church, what fantastic memories. I remember seeing the original Star Wars movie there back in 1977. One of my best movie theater memories ever! I saw a repeat showing at the 8 theaters in original Tysons Corner mall, which was fun but the State was far superior in my opinion.

Thank you for posting the picture!

There's a pic of Bill Page's sign posted here. As far as rows of Trans Ams, it
was a small lot so not much room for very many vehicles. You may want to drop into the dealership. I'm sure they have some old photos to share. Or ask the manager to contact Billy Page. The family probably has tons of their ads that they would be willing to share. Good people

WEAM, lol!

The two stations that were worth listening to in the 50s to the 70s were WEAM @ 1390 and WEEL @ 1310. I was more of a WEEL kid. We could pick those stations up on our radio shack transistor radios when I was a kid in the 70s.

Here's a photo of Olmstead Oldsmobile at 2000 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington. I'm guessing late 1970s, early 1980s. It was a well-run dealership. I purchased 3 Olds Cutlasses from them between 1970 and 1982. Loved those cars and wish I had saved one.

The dealership closed in the late 1980s. A series of bars opened in the old service garage space. I think the last one was Bando Rodeo.

For other Arlington dealerships, how about Dick Blanken Ford? Does anyone have a picture of them. They were on the corner of Wilson Blvd at 10th street, near Marios Pizza House.

Another one I remember is the Mercedes dealership on N. Glebe at Randolph. I think they started in old Amoco station and, for a long time, they were called "American Service Center". I think they may still be in that location.

Great stuff Nelly!

Trying to figure out what kind of cars those are.
The blue one looks like a ford or mercury and the white one looks like a olds or buick.

When I first looked at that pic of Olmstead Olds, my first thought was that it was the old O'Brien & Rohall Mercury dealership. But that was on Lee Highway. Maybe the same architect?.

My dad bought a new '56 Mercury Montclair at O'Brien & Rohall and I took my drivers test in it a few years later. Wish I still had that sumbitch!

I'd say a blue 1974 Ford Torino and a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Never forget Bob Peck Chevrolet at the corner of Glebe and Wilson. Just a class ic dealership. The current building features a mirror of the Bob Peck diamond shaped logo

Thank you for this site! I moved with my family to northern Virginia on 30 September 1978. We arrived at an empty, seemingly in the middle of nowhere Dulles International Airport. For a little over two months we lived in a room at the Quality Inn, where route 50 intersected with Germantown Rd. (my father was in credit card sales and had been relocated). Sign o' the times: after the first night my father asked the hotel to switch our room. We had been right over the disco, on a Saturday night, in the heavy pulsating beat of the Disco era!

I believe there was a Hechingers on the other side of the road and on our side there was a 7/11 where I would go in and buy NFL football helmets in the bubble gum machines. I would walk to Sidney Lanier Middle School (I was in 7th grade...staring as the semester was already underway). I vividly remember the morning of Tuesday 3 October, running to buy the Washington Post out of the box, to see that the Redskins had beaten the Cowboys 9-5, with Theismann running out of the endzone for a safety to preserve the victory (sadly, as far as I know, no video on the internet exists of that game or ending).

I have attempted to look up places I hazily remember from then (I was 12). For example, the Lord Fairfax Motor Inn (?), a pastel light blue collection of individual units that must have dated from the 1930s or 1940s. Living in the Quality Inn got old after a few weeks, but at least I could look out the window of our car and say, hell, it could be worse, we could be at the Lord Fairfax Motor Inn! (I believe it was after the Mr. Donut, on the right side of 29, probably near the Breezeway Motor Inn.

If anybody has any photos I would be surprised and appreciative if they could post here. Thanks!

Yeah, back then Dulles Airport did seem like the middle of nowhere.
Now if you look at overhead views on Google Maps they are putting housing almost right up against it.
I wouldn't want to live that close under the flight paths.

By "Germantown Road" you must mean Jermantown Road.
Why did they spell it with a J?

The Hechingers is now a Giant.
The Quality Inn is still there
Sidney Lanier Middle School is still there (but expanded since your time)
Do you still live in the area?
If not, you can see what that area looks like by going to Google Maps and choosing street view.
Thanks for sharing your memories. I've lived in Fairfax County since 1972, but the DC area my whole life.

I was a long haired youth in high school. Then cut it all off back when Country Music Stars were slicked back greasy kids stuff wearing cats.

When I had long hair I was "Cool" but not stupid

After the head scrape I was "Uncool" then the county Music starts started growing their hair long. Not that I was into Country

And I was told by a long hair in the late 70's who regarded me as a Redneck.

"Man you are uncool, they would not let you into the Truckers Stop" LOL

I laughed my ass off at what the younger stupid Democrat Marijuana Soaked Brain

Absolutely.

But not at the address in that old ad. That was a tiny storefront place, next to the Drug Fair, I believe.

Years ago the Birchmere moved to a MUCH bigger place in Arlandria (Mt Vernon Ave). They book national acts like Graham Nash and many others.

I liked it better when it was a hole-in-the-wall. The first time I ever played banjo in public was at the old Birchmere. Fond memories of that dive!

That was the hate of the times.

Things are worse now than they were then. Way more hate now a days.

Treat every day of your life as a gift and just be nice to people. God bless ya!

He some how got himself into some legal issues, and got a bright idea to kill himself. I forget his name, but he was a retired US Army officer.

George Lincoln Rockwell who lived in the big old farmhouse on "Hatemonger Hill" where Upton park swimming park is now at the top of Wilson Blvd. He had a compound there. He had served in the US Navy during WW2 and was the commander of black sailors who it has been said he treated well at the time.

In 1966 he was interviewed for Playboy Magazine by Alex Haley who had just retired from the Coast Guard. later Haley wrote the famous book "Roots".
In the Playboy article Rockwell and Haley sat down with Rockwell's American Nazi party guards around him , he was cordial to Haley but told him, my people call you "Nigger". Rockwell predicted that by 1972 he would be dead , in jail or the President of the USA. He was right he was dead killed by a henchman in the parking lot of the cleaners in the little shopping center on Wilson Blvd just down the street. The Henchman was up on the roof and shot Rockwell with a German Broomhandle Mauser as he got into his beat up car.. the pistol is still in the evidence vault at Arlington Courthouse.

Rockwell got donations from the sale of American Nazi party items most notable the "Boat Ticket Back to Africa Tickets" which was a 1 way ride back to Africa with "Beer Wine Whiskey and Marijuana" refreshments.

In 1966 I was a young morning Virginia Pilot news paper boy and one morning I saw hundreds of paper "tickets" in the street with the Nazi Flag on them and the words "Niggers! Hand Off Whites Or Die" , a mixed race couple who I delivered the paper to lived in a townhouse there. It scared the shit out of me. I had never seen anything like that in my life. They were from the American Nazi Party.

So Now that you know "The Rest Of the Story" Forget about George Lincoln Rockwell and go to Mario's for a great cheese steak said here on FFU to be the "size of a Buick" "Leftys Special" And Lefty and Joe the cooks there, Lefty on the grill, Joe at the Pizza oven have each been there 50 years and were probably there when Rockwell was outside, but leave them be they have probably been hounded ten thousand times for a story about it.

Sorry No Pics and no bullshit either.

Anyone remember the shootout between the Pagens and Avengers at the Harrison St. shopping center? It was big news around here.

No I was in Norfolk and believe it or not never saw a colored only white only bathroom or water fountain down there. Really never saw much racist hate but I was a kid about 12 13. I only saw the different bathrooms once in 1970 in Georgia on a two lane road before the Interstate went through.

I lived in California in the late 60's and the racist hate was well fueled there and I could not figure that out as they had no blacks in the area I lived, a place you could have called "Snowflake".

Fairfax County's Courthouse had a building in the parking lot between the jail and the old jail on the back side for years It was torn down about 1976 .It had not been used for years as a bathroom just some junk stored. It was the blacks bathroom years ago during the white only colored only days.

About time to go see Lefty again for his special Cheesesteak sub. I make and fake one and the fake is not bad,but not as good as Leftys, and I'm not saying a word bout George Lincoln Rockwell.

The GW Parkway was there in 1940, but it ended a bit south of there at the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

The Parkway cloverleaf at Memorial Bridge was one of the first in the country when it was completed in 1932.

Almost the same view, 40 years earlier.

What I'd like to know is, what was that stately-looking, neo-gothic building on the VA side?

But what is that "house on a pedestal" on the left side of the bridge where it enters DC?

Interesting. I never realized all of that was there that early. Though thinking about it now I should have given the location.

It was a dump before they started the building. I don't remember much about that area other than seeing all of the construction. Crystal City area looked about the same even later.

View from the other side circa early 60s:

More pics and history below. I don't yet see anything mentioning that particular building.

This is an absolute guess, but I know the old Francis Scott Key house was there, and they had to tear it down to put either the current bridge or the one right before it up. Could be that...

The bridge with the horses on it is the old Aqueduct Bridge -- the foundations of which can be seen in early pictures of the Key Bridge. I think the house on the pedestal is fairly close to where the bridge starts in Georgetown.

I would say the "house on a pedestal" was somehow involved in the operation of the aqueduct. Probably torn down in 1933 when they took down the bridge. https://www.flickr.com/photos/gwgelmansprc/12659967484/?ytcheck=1

The Aqueduct Bridge was originally built to carry canal boats from the C&O canal across the river where they would then take the canal down to Alexandria. I believe the canal shut down in the late 1870s and the bridge was converted into a highway bridge. It was replaced by Key Bridge in the 1920s.

During the early 20th century a Virginia trolley line also used the Aqueduct Bridge. If you look at the Exorcist steps picture the trolley station was located to the right where the filling station was. The brick building to the left was the Georgetown car barn for one of DCs trolley lines. When the Key Bridge was built, the DC trolley line was extended across the bridge, ending at a traffic circle on the Virginia side.

Rosslyn in the first half of the 20th century was a largely industrial area.

Thanks! That’s great information. I didn’t know there was a canal that went to Alexandria from the Aqueduct bridge Also, is it called just “aqueduct” when used for its intended purpose and "aqueduct bridge” after being converted to a highway bridge?)

So, the canal boats traveled across the Potomac by way of the aqueduct to the canal on the Virginia side going to Alexandria. Where and how did that transfer from aqueduct to canal happen on the Virginia side and where did that canal cut through Rosslyn and Crystal City. i have never seen and remnants of a canal running along the Potomac that way and I’ve been up and down that coast time and again for many years. Please tell more.

You'll have to go to the library and find "This Was Potomac River" by Fredrick Tilp. He describes it all. The canal has all been filled in years back, It went down to Alexandria. The area round the Potomac river has had much landfill. National AP. The Pentagon, The Belle Haven area, the GW Parkway.

His book is very hard to find, there may be one left probably in the Fairfax City Lib in the Virginian Room upstairs where the old archives are. He died in 1988, the tour boat "Admiral Tilp" in Old Town was named in his honor as he lived in Old town a good while and was one of the major historian's of the Potomac River.

If your in a boat on the Potomac by the Key bridge, with a depth sounder you can see the abutments of that old bridge sticking up partway on the bottom. It comes across the river at a angle from the key. those bumps are good fishing spots.

I used to belong to a DC boat club and Fred Tilp came to several of our meetings. He even brought old movies and stills he took during his travels on the River.

He self-published "This was Potomac River" and that's probably why it's so rare today.

Anyway, I bought two copies and Fred autographed them and wrote me a personal note. They are among my most prized possessions.

He was a great guy and fascinating to listen to. I believe he was an architect by trade.

He Was a architect, he designed many homes and buildings along the river on both sides.

His book was reprinted a couple years back in paper back. His widow had copies of the original till they sold out.

He was born and is buried in Bladensburg Md, where the Anacostia River came up to, still does but is badly silted in. The Anacostia is the pits today but it will come back someday... Hopefully..

It has been a while since I read up on it. I believe that water for the bridge was fed in from the C&O canal in Georgetown by a lock also used to transfer boats from the C&O to the Alexandria canal. During the Civil War the bridge was drained and used as a highway bridge. I believe the canal also crossed Four Mile Run on a bridge as well. It terminated in Alexandria. They did a faux restoration of the Alexandria canal basin where it entered the Potomac at Canal Center Plaza.

A map showing the route through what is now Arlington County can be found here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria_Canal_(Virginia)#/media/File:Map_of_Alexandria_Canal.jpg A civil war era picture can be found here https://alexandriava.gov/historic/info/default.aspx?id=42082 and a lithograph here http://dev01.press.jhu.edu/books/supplemental/canal/images/AquedofPotmacLOC.jpg (Hopefully my links are correct)

@DAJ I did not know the bridge abutment foundations were still there. Cool.

BTW my dates are slightly off as the canal apparently made it into the 1880s.

Only one abutment remains.

Any idea what year that airshow was? Or do I have to go back and find the years in the late 50s or early 60s in which July 10 was on a Sunday?

I am guessing that the airpark was the one where Loehmann's Plaza (or whatever it is called now) sits. I grew up basically across Rt. 50 from there.

You wouldn't find it because it was 1949!
