Just a shot in the dark on the Tastee Freez....Rumor is the old Anita's/Donut Dinette was originally a TF at 147 Maple Ave Vienna...now Maple Ave restaurant. Is that a Magruder's sign in the background of the old pic? Check out the angle comparison of the side...hmmmm.

Looks the same to me, unless EVERY building they made was the same (like a Pizza Hut). Don't know enough about the franchise to say.

But great detective work!!

If that were a Magruder's sign in the background of the pic at the lower left (it is not), it would be on the wrong side of Maple Ave and I don't think Magruder's was in Vienna in March of 1960. Further, in that same view, I would expect to see Lawyer's Road coming in right about where those cars are park. Same view, I am not sure when Money and King moved to their current location just west of the old Anita's (they have been in business over 100 years), but that building is missing as well.

Correct. Magruders opened on the south side of Maple Avenue in 1970. The space had previously been an Acme Market. (What's currently the Fresh Market had been an A&P at about that time as well.) Meanwhile, the building that has housed the doughnut shop, the original Anita's (which opened in 1974), and Maple Avenue Restaurant (which opened in 2009) is across the street on the north side of Maple Avenue. But it wouldn't have been there in 1960 either. Money & King would have been there in 1960, having been built in its present location in 1948 after 67 years of operation on Church Street.

Not enough pixels for me to make anything out of the sign in the lower-left picture with what graphics software I have to play with, so no help there.

That old photo of Tastee Freeze looks like it has a very low mountain range in the background...almost like on Rt 11 in New Market, Va or something...who knows...

I remember Springfield Plaza had a big field adjacent to the shopping center and once a year for several years, circa 1968 or so, a helicopter would drop ping pong balls with numbers on them corresponding to prizes. The BIG prizes were typically a color TV or a bike, but Super Giant gave away a lot of cherry pies. Might have been in celebration of George Washington's birthday. The kids would line up at the starting line, the helicopter would fly over, and a guy would dump the ping pong balls out of boxes down onto the field. Kids would make a mad dash for them. I never won a prize, but a friend won a cherry pie.

Dave Henery thanks for the shout out.

Let's look at the clues:

The lower left picture has the bottom of a school zone sign in it. So that means there is a school nearby.

The mountains in the upper right picture, if it was around here, it would be facing west heading toward the Blue Ridge.

Possibly around Centreville, old Centreville ES area, now Mountain View High for the delinquents?

I thought that I would remember all ice cream places but March 1960, I was a little young.

I believe Dulles has a Chantilly address- but it really sits on a former town called Willard. The first choice for the airport was Burke. Either the Burke residents at the time (all seven of them) rose up in rebellion to the plan or there were drainage issues at the site - depends who you ask. I think there is a thread elsewhere in Fairfax Underground relating to the Dulles airport history. Here is a link related to Burke Lake Park- where the airport was originally planned to be.

according to wiki - Fairfax County Bourbon was a brand from Bowman distillery in (originally) Reston. The same folks who make Virginia Gentleman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Smith_Bowman_Distillery

Perhaps Fairfax County bourbon is really just Virginia Gentlemen rebranded for Fairfax County employees? Im pretty sure we FCPS kids drove some of the teachers and principals to drink with some of the stuff we pulled. ;-)

Even though the distillery was sold to folks in New Orleans, I am still a fan of the Bowman products when I visit the VA ABC store.

I remember that place being a tiny version of Anita's. I used to go here for lunch when I worked in Oakton (almost 20 years ago). Mmmm - good food, New Mexico version- a little different than Mexican. Been a while since I've been to an Anita's, at least we still got one on Old Keen Mill. Think I'll go there soon.

Don't know whether these have been posted here or not. Somehow I've missed that there's an Annandale Chamber of Commerce site until now.

This is kind of interesting. Not an actual pic of it but it says that there was a similar Nike missile site located at Gallows and Lincolnshire. That would be somewhere in the triangle area where Annandale and Gallows meet. Never heard of that being there before.

I don't see it listed at all on any of the Nike site resources that I checked quickly. I'd tend to trust those more than the Annandale Chamber. As I said, that was the first reference to anything there that I'd ever seen so it had me wondering. Could just be a mistake or maybe confusion with some other system or related storage/transportation/whatever area.

Thats Roy Rogers and he was a good guy a 100% American. But Hot Shoppes to RR's in 1968? The Hot Shoppes Jr at Picket shoipping center by WT Woodson did not change until about 1976.

Who remembers when Roy and his band played at that Roy Rogers about 76 or 77 and the long haired "punk" from W.T.W threw the pie at Roy, and Roy stopped and told the crowd that was the only time in his life someone did that. I thought it was really shitty of the "punk" but got to know him a bit and the punk was only a smoked up kid at the time and he was not really that bad a fellow. He went to work for the school maintenance dept. after WTW.

I will take a Roys hamburger over a Wendys, McD's any day of the week and theres still three left on the southern end of FXCO today. Their chicken was very good too have not had that in a while all fried chicken today is getting up in price

Marriott owned both Hot Shoppes And Roy's. Old man Marriott was a good friend of Roy(both Mormon) and bailed out the fast food chain. But Billy Jr. sold off everything to build the hotel empire.
What goes up eventually falls down. Marriott isn't top dog anymore. the old man believed in taking care of the employees.

RR's hamburger's were much better when Marriot owned them. The ham on the RR was also much better. Their salad bar was pretty good for a fast food restaurant.

What are the roast beef sandwiches like now-a-days? Are they as good as they were 20 years ago, or are they that "processed" roast beef like at Arby's? I keep meaning to check out the Roy's near Kingstown, but the girlfriend refuses to eat fast food, it's too far for take-out and I hate eating alone at a restaurant.

The Lamplighter was in a little strip mall adjacent the west side of Kann's Department Store, the latter having served as the George Mason School of Law in the more recent past. It was there at least through the mid to late 80s. The strip mall was leveled for redevelopment, and the Lamplighter moved out to Fairfax, next door to The Deli (Fairfax location). I think I heard that it eventually closed its doors for good, but am not sure.

Lamplighter was where I (finally) got caught using my fake ID.

It was a perfectly altered driver's license that had gotten me in anywhere I'd wanted in Georgetown, etc., since about age 16.

I feel kinda bad for kids these days. It was fairly easy to fake driver's licenses back then with the old paper ones. Also other passable official looking IDs were easy to get. I was a foreign student named Frederick with a fake German license for a while. lol

This is a long shot but does anyone remember the bratwurst haus? It was off route 50 in the falls church area in a strip mall. It was on the right if you were headed east maybe a mile inside the beltway.
They had rockin bands on the weekends and they had pitchers!!

Yeah, it was in Loehmann's Plaza. A couple of doors down from where Celebrity Delly is now.

Yeah, I don't have any pictures of Bratwursthaus, but it was in the same strip as Celebrity Delly, as mentioned above. One of my neighbor buddy's Dad bought the place about the time I left for college, and it became a true haven for underage drinking for the FCHS crowd for a while (mid to late 70s).

Class of '82 here and we used to cruise Loehmann's alot on weekends. I remember it, but I was never old enough to venture inside. I just remember seeing slutty looking girls a couple years older than me go in there alot and wishing I was a bit older. Our thing was Uncle Sam's (now Kilroy's) on Ladies' Night. Not likely to see a local bar full of drunken high school seniors again anytime soon.

WOW!
I am glad to see that my memories of Bratwursthaus were real. I was only there a few nights but it was some intense music from mostly local bands. Great times! Thanks.

If it was The Lamplighter in Jermantown Square, yes, it closed two or three years ago.

I have a few thousand pictures of fairfax county from the late 1900"s to the 50's. What would be the best way get them on here? Privacy is a concern so a direct download from my computer is something I would like to avoid.

Yes, that EAT place was Bournes Drive Inn, my family bought it in 1962. George Pittaway was in the band and he used to bring his Austin Healey to the Esso station next door which my family also owned. It had a big Reston Billboard sign on the property. Great to see that pic again, it was on the back of the album cover

I used to stop at EAT a couple times a week back in the early 80s. They had some kind of ham soup with beans in it that was so awesome. They would sell me that soup piping hot on a freezing cold day, so hot you had to let it cool about 5 minutes before you could eat it. That place was fantastic.

Is the sign in the photo that says "Centerville Restaurant" the building that had Paynes Restaurant in it? That place was awesome. So sad when they closed. Interesting that the sign in the forefront with the arrow says Centreville and the sign on the building says Centerville. What is up with that???

Pic Temple was before my time but your comment led me to this video of a grand opening of a Giant food store in northern Virginia sometime in the 50s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg-S2Qm7N-k

Can anybody identify the exact location of the Giant food in this video? One Youtube comment says it's Bradlee shopping center and another says it is somewhere else.

I don't think so, unless the building completely changed (as in knocked down). I too was a Fairlington kid, if you stood out front of the Giant and looked to your left (where the Pastry Shop etc is), there was a swimming pool. I don't see that in the video, but am curious as to where it could be...

I worked for the Fairfax County Park Authority from 1973 utill 2002. I worked with the Park Police but in my time they were driving dark green cars. I worked Lake Fairfax from 73 to 80, but was in another park Riverbend when they held the Lalapaloosa (cksp)in 91. I lived at the pits driving souped up beetle buggies. I lived in Broyhill McLean Estates 58-71 got out of McLean high in 65. There was a fellow named Lemuel Morris Northern than ran a pony farm right across Davidson road from the high school, in my teens I worked horses and ponies for him. I also worked Judge Hammels fields with J. Preston Rodgers baling hay in the summers. I lived on Audmar Dr, just across 123. That property has been Lewinsville Park for quite some time now. About the house burning behind the Mclean garden vegetable stand. The fire truck parked next to the house got roasted. The fire fell through the second floor and it was to hot to get to the truck to move it. I worked for Ed White who ran the Esso at 123 and Old Dominion during the time it changed over to Exxon. there was an Amoco on the other side of Old Dom. and a Sunoco next to Us on 123. I went to seventh grade at the Franklin Sherman School just behind the Esso. We were supervised by the principal when we fired off homemade CO2 cartridge/matchhead rockets in the school playground. I can't even imagine kids today being allowed to do that. I belonged to McLean Chapter of DeMolays and later to Sharon 327 Masonic lodge. I remember the building of the Giant food store strip mall it also had a Peoples Drug store, Around the corner was Preston Drug, They had a much better lunch counter. I worked for 9 months in late 65-66 at the Falls Church C&P telephone building If I remember the address was 6700 lee hiway in Falls Church, Actually My step-dad Albert Child was the boss of the building a few years earlier than that. When the Mc Lean McDonalds opened in the early sixties they offered the ".47 cent meal" a burger, fries and a shake, oh yeah it was a walk-up service only building at first. I am now retired and living in Minnesota. I look at satelite views of McLean and don't recognize any of it. the times they have already changed.

Pizza supreme behind the Safeway store. The Supreme burger was awesome and way before its time. The picture on page 34 of the Reston area must have been taken well before 1950. Lake Fairfax Park was built by a citizen and opened in 1953 or so. Mr Crippen damned up the output side of a soapstone quarry to create the Lake The Park Authority bought it from him. Niether the lake nor the quarry show on the photo. The lake is off rt.606 about 1/2 mile south of rt 7. I do not see Springvale ave (rt 606 north of rt 7). nor Huntermill rd which is between rt 7 and Lake Fairfax Drive. The picture 5-11-14 of 123 and old dominion dr. the large wooden house was the Routh Robbins realty office. and it was BLUE. I worked for a short time at the Esso station and in 69 the price of gas was about 33-35 for regular. The Spaghetti Mill in Annandale had a run of bad trouble there was glass in the sauce. It turned out that one of the cooks broke the seal on the jars of sauce by whacking the lid with the backbone of a heavy kitchen knife. He apparently never noticed the broken rim of the glass jars. I took Food Service Managers Permit classes from the Health inspector that figured out the problem.

Lalapaloosa was fucking awesome in 1991. It sucked ass in 1992 because it was too fucking hot. They ran out of water and had to bring in water trucks to hose down the crowds. They eventually brought in delivery trucks and just threw bottles of water into the crowds for free because people were passing out from the heat.

You got your years mixed up there. 1991 was the hot year when they ran out of water. One of my female friends actually fainted from the heat. 1992 was the wet year, where it got super muddy and tore the field up and I suspect that's why they never had it there again.

Interestingly, the next door building that now houses Jireh's Bakery was once Paynes General Store.

There was a period of time in Centreville history when I see the spelling as Centerville. No often, but occasionally. As I recall it was mostly around the 1920s-1930s.
