I'd like to make a request; photos of the former at-grade railroad crossings at Old Burke Lake Road, Burke Road, Guinea Road, and Van Dorn Street.

Not a Pinto, I think it's a Vega or possibly something from AMC, but definitely not a Pinto. Also my guess for that shopping center is the center on Broad St. right near George Mason Highschool.

Yes those are two Chevrolet Vegas parked next to each other before their engines self-destructed. A Ford Maverick is in the background. This is the plaza in Falls Church where Staples is located now. Dart Drug was just to the right of the picture's angle. I frequented the Radio Shack their often when they'd have coupons in their circulars for free 5 D cell flashlights. I bought a number of their electronic kits their too. I also bought fish and related things at the Aquarium store pictured. Birch Street is just beyond Grants and the plaza on the other side of Birch Street is the where Giant is and was then as well.

Can't find any of those (and I'd like to find a photo of the roundabout that used to be on Guinea near that crossing).

But here's something similar from Arlington: The old W&OD crossing of Shirley Highway just north of Shirlington. I'm not sure whether it was numbered I-95 yet or whether it was still VA-350 (railroad crossings violate Interstate standards, of course). Note the low brown building on the left that was only demolished this year, as well as the apartments/condos up the hill that are still there.

By the way, speaking of I-95/Shirley Highway, here is the interchange with Route 1 just north of Woodbridge in southern Fairfax County. I don't know what year this was:

VDOT photo of Shirley Highway under construction in 1949:

Now for something really different. How many of us have ever seen Memorial Bridge with the draw span OPEN? I sure haven't, especially considering that the span last opened in February 1961 and I wasn't born yet!

Just discovered this: The Potomac River in 1930. Dredging was underway to "reclaim" land to build the GW Parkway south of the bridge towards where Reagan Airport is today. The bridge in the immediate front is the "Long Bridge," which carries trains. The second one is the old "Highway Bridge," now replaced by the 14th Street Bridge complex. The old Hoover Field airport is visible to the left where the Pentagon North Parking is now. Notice no Jefferson Memorial yet, either.

Thanks for he location clarification- I was going to say the photo is definately NOT the Grants at Rose Hill.

Springfield Mall (Town Center) update- I can confirm there is No Time Out in the Mall. I was able to find Spencer's Gifts though, it moved to an inconspicuous spot. I think Springfield looks like the same old mall with new Tyson's interior finishes. Hmm.. we had to wait so long for that?

JACKPOT!!!!!

Over 200 pages of old photos of the Beltway, including just about every interchange in Fairfax and Montgomery Counties, may be found in this transcript of Congressional hearings from 1968. The discussion was about standards for highway signs, so some of you may find the text boring. But it's an absolute treasure trove of pictures of the Beltway. Scroll to Page 405 to start viewing the pictures.

A few highlights include photos of the ORIGINAL Springfield Interchange (back when northbound traffic coming up I-95 exited right all at the same spot and then the ramp split for the two sides of the Beltway), some signs from Maryland bearing Interstate 70S shields (now I-270), a bunch of references to the Beltway as a 65-mph highway (I guess we have 65 again in the HO/T lanes!), and all the original exit numbers dating back to when Route 1 was Exit 1 and it went clockwise around to Exit 38 for I-295. It's also amusing to see the old cars and the utterly minuscule guardrails roads used to have.

Hope you enjoy the photos....this is great old stuff!

In the dial phone days you could make the telephone ring by dialing 9 5 8 listen for the dial tone dial 6, hang up. The phone would ring, and continue ringing until someone picked up.

Dial phone memories:

- a telephone repairman or maybe an installer making our (dial) phone ring for fun and entertainment.

- next door neighbors in Springfield were early adapters and got a push button phone. They taught me how to play the Star Wars Theme on their phone.

The recorded weather phone number was WE6-2525 (or any four digits) and the recorded time number was 844-2525. I often called the weather number at my front desk receptionist job to look busy, to pretend I was talking to a customer, or if I had to excuse myself to call someone!

Hey WingNut, the school next to Army-Navy CC is Hoffman-Boston Elementary. Notable because it used to be the black high school in Arlington County until integration in the late 60's. Since converted to an elementary school.

I have written a book and it has a reference to George Mason as the college at which I met my wife in 1966. I would like to use a picture such as this as an illustration in the book. Do you know who owns this pic or if it is now public domain? Gladly use "photo courtesy of" or grant other credit.

Thanks

Yeah that was a pretty clever trick back in the late 70's. I remember the long cords people had on phones and the switch from rotary to push button.

The old time and weather numbers were pretty prehistoric too, LOL.

Thanks all...this thread and your contributions truly inspire me...GREAT F-in Memories! AS far as the diner...Yes, That is what was originally "The Streamliner Diner" from @ 1948 (owned by Bob Parcelles) built in NJ also...Then it became Bob's Diner....then Bob's House of Beef (with the addition added on) ....then Mama's when it was covered up...You could still see the sweet pink ceiling in the front entry of Mama's.... a few other owners...then El Paso...next to the Harley Davidson in FFX. It is in very good condition and should be uncovered and reopened...I loved that diner. BTW "Bob" also got his start at the 29 Diner before venturing out on his own.

I remember seeing Touch Tone phones for the first time at the 1964 New York World" Fair. Massive lines to get into the Bell Telephone pavilion.

I wanted one bad, but mom wouldn't spring for the extra monthly fee. She said the $7 per month phone bill we were paying was already too much!

Touch tone? The New York World's Fair showed us the future with the Picture Phone! You called someone in another booth and could carry on a conversation while seeing them!

Yeah I know, we now have Skype. But you must remember, this was back in 1964/1965!

I remember the same channel lineup in the mid 80's as well before we subscribed to cable TV for the first time. We also received the weekly TV Guide with the Sunday paper.

Bored at Work2, when and where was Another Universe? What did they sell? Don't remember this store at all, although, admittedly, I was more of a Suzie's Casuals, Gunne Sax, Limited, Jean Nicole and Garfinckels shopper back in the day. I don't beleive I ever visited a non clothing or makeup store at the Springfield Mall, except for a forgettable first and last date with an Edisonboy who thought it was hilarious to show me all of the raunchy toys that Hong Kong and Spencer's sold.

Oh, and I did get to Farrell's after the movies.

Springfield Mall...the only mall you'll ever need (if you were a teenage girl in the mid 80s)

Another Universe was a local retail chain that sold comic books and assorted entertainment merchandise. The one in the picture above was in Springfield Mall, they also had a store at Fair Oaks Mall, and several in Maryland and DC. A little more info is available at http://www.anotheruniverse.info/

There's a new comic book store at Fair Oaks Mall by Sears.
I could spend hours in there reading stuff.

The old Hunter station on the Washington & Old Dominion from the early 1900's. This is looking west toward Herndon. The grade crossing is Hunter Mill Road -- about the only thing in the picture that isn't dead and gone now.

I was at the library in Fairfax City and I decided to take a look at their copy of the Northern Virginia Major Thoroughfare Plan. For those not familiar with it, it's a 1969 study done for the Virginia Department of Highways (now VDOT) regarding what sorts of road improvements and new highways should be built to handle the anticipated demand in 1985.

Obviously very little of what was proposed came to pass, but here's an overview map of Fairfax County. I've highlighted it in the colors noted to show the major highways they proposed. The dashed red segment was a portion of the Outer Beltway whose alignment was supposed to be determined after further study.

Two more.

Plan for the intersection of Guinea and Braddock. See annotation detailing colors to help orient yourself. The top of the map is north, where Guinea Road heads north towards Route 236.

I think I may have posted this second one before: Plan for the Fairfax Circle area. Part of this actually got built in the late 1980s. Some of you may recall Pickett Road used to be a two-lane road (one lane in each direction) and that when you came down the hill to where those ballfields are, it continued to the left of where it goes now, then curved to the left past the old Pizza Hut and Memco (later Bradlee's, Hechinger, Home Depot...) to end at Old Lee Highway. Hence the current name "Old Pickett Road." Meanwhile, Blake Lane ended at Route 29 at the intersection where the IHOP is today. This map shows in 1969 there was a recommendation to realign Pickett and connect it with Blake. Obviously, that was built. The rest of this was NOT. Imagine how different that area would look with a massive highway interchange on the location where Circle Towers stands now. (My father says in 1974 looked at a unit in Circle Towers but the doorknob came off in his hand.)

The highway would have had six lanes, BTW.

Troll uses a capital i instead of lower case L.

Facebook pictures in open groups are public domain as soon as they are posted. I have snagged a few from here to post on facebook and vice versa. No harm done to anyone.

The Scot sign definitely looks like .28 and not .79 in both pictures. Gas prices didn't climb above the mid-30s until the 1973 energy crisis. Esso changed to Exxon at the end of 1972 and American changed to Amoco a couple of years before that, so the color picture couldn't be any later than the 1960s. Back then, .79 would have purchased a couple of gallons with change coming back. The .28 price posted by the Scot station was low even for that era, but not out of the realm of possibility given that Scot was an independent that relied on lower prices to lure people away from the name brands. In the days when ethnic stereotypes were still considered legitimate advertising techniques, references to Scottish people were sometimes used to imply thrift.

^^^ This. There was some hefty inflation in the years after WWI that drove average prices to 27 cents a gallon by 1949. But it was still just 31 cents a gallon in 1966. and price-wars between stations were quite common in those days. There would be nothing at all odd about a price of 29 cents a gallon at any point from the late 40's to the late 60's.

In real terms, the price of gas fell continuously from 1936 to 1974. Those 1949 pump prices would have been $2.10 per gallon in 2013 dollars, and in 1966, it would have been $1.73.
