At the carnival in Annandale. A friend played some suckers game rolling a ball into a bin to win a prize to give to a girl in Wagon Wheel. He came close but could not win, he was pulling dollars out of his pocket, it went on for a half a hour till he was broke 40 dollars gone.. then he bummed some money from us to go to Wagon Wheel. 40 dollars was an enough money to go out and party two nights back then. All weekend, Unless you needed to win a prize at a carnival.

The carnival I went to at West Springfield was there in April 1970. It was not that big but was a carnival.

Perhaps in your era. By 1976-ish 7th grade shop, the leather thing was a core element, and you could buy the kit from the shop teacher (at least at Washington Irving).

My best friend and I were each set up by our parents to buy that kit for each other, for christmas. He saw through the ruse. I was trusting.

Anyway, this is from the 1974-75 Sketchbook, for Washington Irving Intermediate School:

The panel on the right is leather tools, along with Mr. Randolph, the inflictor of leather skills (I wish him and his well), in front of the panel of shop owned leather tools.

This is how 7-8th grade girls dressed for shop class. Alas. the associated test did not name the subjects. (Yearbook standards in an era of transition.)

Look at all of those 'scary' sharp tools!

Guess that they're probably long gone now.

Do they even still have shop classes?

Lbss82, that picture was taken at the West Falls Plaza along Broad Street in Falls Church after a fire at the old Dart Drug. The Dart was located next to Trak Auto (another Herbert Haft creation) and was being turned into a Fantle's. Fantle's was very short lived before everything around here became homogenized into a CVS or Walgreen's.

I remember FCPD officers Freed and Bach iced a guy behind the Trak Auto some time in the late 90's. Guy pulled a gun and got waxed. The Barney Fife's of the FCPD never got such boners in their lives to use their one bullet each.

Sleepy,

The post card from Sweeney's Motel at Fairfax Circle mentions that it's within walking distance of "The Fairfax Golf and Country Club". The card was mailed in 1953. I moved to the area about 10 years after that and there's never been a golf coursse in that area besides the Army/Navy CC. Does anyone know where the Fairfax G&CC was? Maybe it was taken over by the Army/Navy?

I've got a 1965 AAA map of NoVa which also calls the course on Old Lee Highway "Army Navy Country Club (Fairfax Course). If it had another name, it would be earlier than that. BTW the same map shows the Washington Virginia Airport in Baileys Crossroads, and I-395 is labeled Shirley Highway, State Route 350

"The Fairfax Golf and Country Club" is the ANCC. Opened as a public course at first - my dad played there in the early 50's while stationed in DC.

The current FFX CC was the "Court House GC&CC" until much later.

No, I believe the building was finally torn down and there's a, wait for it, bank on the land now.

My folks got their furniture for the first home at Fairfax Furniture, it was a Scan-type place for awhile after FF closed.

The picture of the old Dart Drug in Falls Church looks a lot like the location where the Staples is now in the strip mall just northwest of the W&OD overpass near Don Beyer Volvo's used-car lot. I base that guess on the building visible in the background, which looks like the funeral home that's still located next door to that location.

That's correct. That's broad street. Across the way is the U haul center. You can see Trak Auto next door in the photo. Fantles wasn't around very long...what replaced it? Another drug store I think.

Since you mention them, I miss Trak Auto. Always liked their stores better than Advance Auto Parts, and the two local Pep Boys locations of which I'm aware (Annandale and Hybla Valley) are both fairly inconvenient to where I live and aren't all that well-organized.

The coolest place to hang out in Springfield Mall if you were a young teen back in the late 70's or early 80's. I remember they even had a bumper car racing track in the back. Or was that Time-Out 2? It was the one downstairs by Monkey Wards. The cooler and bigger of the two Time-Outs.

Here's an 1962 yearbook ad for Cherry Smash, which was a soft drink manufactured in Arlington. There's quite a history behind what is described here as "Arlington's oldest industry." The building at the listed address still stands and now is occupied by Enterprise Rent-A-Car (see the second picture). According to property records, it was constructed in 1948. Prior to that time, Cherry Smash was manufactured in a former brewery building located where the Marriott Key Bridge now stands (third picture). The brewery had been forced to cease operations as a result of Prohibition.

The downstairs arcade was first called Spaceway Raceway. They had bumpercars and then it switched to radio controlled boats I think. I remember they had their own outside entrance/exit for a while. Guys used to always hang out there selling pills. They eventually closed off that entrance, I think maybe after it became Time-Out 2.

What I really miss from old Springfield Mall is Taco Laredo. Loved their burritos.

Cool pics. I remember Cherry Smash, that stuff was great. I'm not old enough to remember these syrup dispensers, but I do remember seeing one on American Pickers once. We just got it in bottles at the grocery store.

My father and a neighbor used to take my brother, the neighbor's son, and me to see the Globetrotters at the Capital Centre each year and then we always went to Time Out afterwards. I remember they had the Haunted House pinball machine. It had THREE levels, one a "basement" underneath the main board. As a little kid I had no idea of the nuances of playing pinball, I'd just put the ball in play and smack the flippers. That game was complex and I'd love to get the chance to try it again now.

I think that's Leesburg Pike, just east of the intersection with Columbia Pike. If I'm not mistaken that Blackeyed Pea is where the Krispy Kreme used to be, and now it's a City Diner.

The building is still there, although the appearance is significantly altered. I believe the shot is from the shopping center parking lot towards Braddock Road, which may also account for the difficulty in recognizing it.

You're correct. Edward Bennett Williams owned the Redskins and he joked that he gave George Allen an unlimited budget and he exceeded it.

As the story notes, after the Redskins moved to their current facility, they leased the old Redskins Park to DC United. I remember seeing references to it as United Park during that period. The street on which it is located is still called Redskin Drive.

Old Redskins Park is close enough to the south runway at Dulles that Joe Gibbs used to use the sound of incoming British Airways Concorde flights as his sign it was morning because he was there all night so often and he had had all clocks removed from meeting rooms.

Thank God they still do build them!!

Still there, they turfed both fields and rent them out, have played Rugby there and my kids soccer team rents the fields for winter practice.

You are correct; It is in the 5600 block of Leesburg Pike. The side street you see is Rock Spring Ave I believe.

>>>>>>>SO I found a website with google about the old brewery. I can't believe Arlington was the red light district of D.C. at one point and Alexandria had horse tracks. haha

Hey! Springfield Mall (ahem "Town Center")is supposed to reopen today! lets see if Time Out is back! Something tells me it not though - the stores listing is too "Tysons corner like". Say "Town Center" in the same inflection of "Grey Poupon" hmm looks like the same mall on steroids to me.

You used to run across the planters at Landmark too, huh? Probably why they don't have stuff like that at malls anymore- at a minimum they would have to be completely foam padded now. Its amazing we survived- we didn't use child seats, rode in the back of pickup trucks, ran across concrete planters, etc. etc.

You left out played football and rode bikes without helmets. And yes I was one of those who ran across the planters too.

OK, I remember now! There was a Roy Rogers and a Chesapeake bagel place there in the 80s. My Dad had friends who lived in Fairlington and we went up there on weekends sometimes. Thanks!

As others have said, that picture is of the original "Mixing Bowl" interchange (before the local media erroneously used that term to refer to the Springfield Interchange) during reconstruction in the early 1970s. It became known as the "Mixing Bowl" because Washington Boulevard (Route 27) ran tangent to I-95 for a very short segment and people had to weave on and off the highway, causing major backups; in addition, on the inbound side Washington Boulevard was on the left.

Prior to construction:

1971 view during construction; the reversible roadway now used as HOV lanes was built at the same time:

1979 view after construction was completed:

The photos seen above may be found on the "Roads to the Future" website, which, despite its name, has a lot of neat old photos of roads in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Here's a link to the discussion of the Pentagon Road System:

The Korvettes picture above is not of the Baileys Crossroads site but rather of another store, which I believe was located in New York. There is a short video of the Baileys Crossroads store that is easy to find online. Below is a rather crude panoramic view of the Baileys Crossroad location that I lifted from that video by piecing together screen shots as the camera pans from left to right. Below that is the site as it looks today. If you look closely you'll see that the front profile of the store configuration still approximates what you see in the older shot, with the higher elevation limited to a portion of the strip to the right of center.

That looks like Bradlee shopping center off Rt 7 in Alexandria.

The old phone books at the Virginia Room at the Fairfax Central library would tell by looking up the address of Radio Shack and Grants and what looks like the auto parts store Hi-Gear.
