Not quite. The theory was "General Motors, cradle to grave": your first car was a Chevrolet, and as you proceeded up the ladder in your career, you progressed through Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and then finally Cadillac.

Here's a nice old ad that shows the sequence, although it doesn't talk about the progression: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMzQ0/z/9TkAAOxy0bRTEsK8/$_57.JPG

Geo, Saturn, and the other oddball brands came later, of course, and didn't really fit in, which is one reason they're gone.

And GMC was always just trucks.

Originally the five brands were fiercely distinct; later, of course, they shared pretty well everything. The Cimarron, for example, was a (barely) tarted-up Chevy Cavalier.

And no, I'm not a GM fan -- owned a couple back in the 70s, but haven't seen one worth buying since (well, maybe a Corvette, but be serious).

Yes,
That looks like the split at Washington St. (lee Highway) and Hillwood Ave.
The Safeway is where Coleman Powersports is now.
What was it before Coleman, a Bell or Best Company store?

The old (pre-1999) Capt. Pell's location was on the south side of current Lee Highway, a little west of Cedar Lane. Pretty near where the fire station is now. They were closed for a while after they lost the old site. Then they moved to the new one, which had been the Old Budapest, quite a nice Hungarian restaurant.

Great pic old guy!

For the bonus round, how many cars can you ID in this Mclean picture?
I see the blue and white VW beetles and a Ford falcon wagon to the left but what kind of car is in front of the white beetle? Is that a tan AMC matador wagon in the esso lot? I am re-posting your pic for the ease of the bonus round contestants.

Pretty sure the one in front of the white Bug is some sort of Mopar product, from the silhouette, somewhere '68 to '70 or so.

Oh why did I stumble across this while waiting for the youngest to get home. I've been staring at the picture for about 20 minutes now, and coming to the realization that I really didn't pay much attention to stuff when I was a kid.

I grew up in another part of the county, and didn't go through McLean all that often, but I'm thinking that this is the intersection of Chainbridge (from which the picture was shot) and Old Dominion.

Anyway, I'll take a stab, moving left to right on the streets.

From left on Old Dominion: late 50's Chevrolet, blue VW.

On Chainbridge, coming west: Ford Falcon station wagon, late 60s Buick or Oldmobile (appears to have that round logo on the grill), third car is obscured by white beetle's driver's head and window sticker.

On Chainbridge, going east toward McLean Baptist; white VW, (I'm thinking it's a) Chysler Imperial, a pre-1968 Mustang, and a 68 Pontiac Lemans.

On Old Dominion, turning left/west: Ford Falcon (later year than the station wagen), Dodge Dart.

On Old Dominion, turning right/east: mid-60s Chevrolet Chevelle. There a second car behind it, but it's mostly blocked by the Dodge Dart. I'm guessing a Cadillac -- grill looks big, and it is McLean, after all.

Esso parking lot, moving left to right: first two cars are blocked in all the distinctive places (grills, rear lights). I'm guessing the one farthest from the camera is a Chevrolet Tempest. The dark car I'll go with a Ford Torino.

In the back parked facing east are two Chyslers. The first one closest to the white building, I'm not sure about, but it looks very familiar. The other, closer to the Esso office is a Dart/Valiant. Of course, if I say Dart/Valiant/Scamp for any mid-sized Chysler of this era, I can't go wrong.

Far right, next to the office: A lot is obscured, but I'll guess a Chevy Impala. The other, generic mid 1960s American subcompact, built in Windsor, Ont.

Do we get partial credit for showing our work?

You get LOTS of credit! (Not least for supporting my contention that the one in front of the white Bug is a Chrysler product.)

You sound like my dad, who would look at an old car going by and say "Ah, that's a 52 Ford...the taillights were different from the 51". If only you (and he) could monetize that talent!

The car in front of the white VeeDubb looks like an AMC product. Surely someone can identify it for sure.

Does anyone have any pics of the porno shop on Route 1 just south of Telegraph Road?? It was on the right if you were headed south, just past the Burger King. Usually a guy was working the counter, but every once in a while some sleazy woman who was putting herself through medical school or law school would be working. The women always knew the best porno to buy. That place was great for porno, and I have the porno to prove it!!! Also, what about Fanny Hills, the strip joint up near Shakey's?? I always thought that was amusing - a strip joint near Shakeys!!!!

I recognize that picture. When I was really young we went to that Safeway, then we switched to the Giant near 7 Corners, maybe that was when the Safeway closed and became that weird showroom store, Bell. Then later that house looking building became a Rainbow Tree head shop, and even later Flipper McGees arcade opened up across the street. I still remember being 12 years old and buying a bong with 2 friends at the Rainbow Tree in Annandale before it became Penguin Feather. They even let us check it for leaks in their bathroom. I wonder how 12 year olds get bongs now-a-days.

Not old enough to visit porno shops when they existed around here, but I remember there being one in Bailey's Crossroads. Actually it was sort of between Culmore and Bailey's in the basement of a building on Rte. 7. I think that's where some of my parent's hardcore porno mags came from. I think I was 12 or 13 when I first found their stash. I remember being so excited I was shaking looking at my first pics of people actually having sex. Kids now-a-days are so spoiled with the ease of internet porn. Oh well at least I could visit the strip clubs on 14th St. (and go to other bars) when I was 18.

I think the turning car in question is a 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix.

This is a nitpick; but I'm pretty sure that menu/ poster is from Upstate/ Eastern NY state. I grew up there and Colonie, Rotterdam and Latham are all names of towns within an hour or so of each other there.

Yes, Annandale Millwork.

There was another lumberyard/hardware store a little west of there across from where Andy's Pizza and Burger Chef were. Star Supply was the name of it.

Yeah that's it, the building behind. If you go inside it you can tell that it is very old. Lumbar mill sounds about right. Would be cool to see any pictures of it back in the day. It has to be one of the older buildings in that area.

That was a Lowe's, if that counts as a lumber yard. There was also a Southern States about a block away at 123 and Park, where Noodles & Company is now.

That was the old Annandale Millworks, it moved out to Gainesville and was located next to the train tracks near where they cross(ed) Lee Highway. I'm not sure if it is still there since the land is getting so valuable out there.

Businesses like that keep moving out into developed areas until they get developed and the land is too valuable for them to keep up with the taxes.

FYI, the folks at that antique place in Annandale are a bit scary and I don't know how they afford the taxes on that land...

Here's an article about the guy that owns that odd brown Annandale antique barn. It was indeed at one time a lumber storage area for a sawmill. If you read the yelp reviews of the place the sounds like a real turd.

The antique people don't own the building; they just lease it. Their building sits on a larger tract that also includes the structure in front, all of which is owned by someone from North Carolina. The parcel has been listed for sale in recent years with the idea that the buildings could be razed and replaced with a modern strip center. The list price was $4 million. Below is the picture from the listing. The description states: "Existing structures are tenanted but have no value.”

I don't remember the arcade game, but we had the Atari 2600 version for use with our Intellivision System Changer device (it plugged into the Intellivision cartridge slot and allowed you to play Atari 2600 games using either the Intellivision disc controllers or plug-in Atari joysticks). Loved that game, although Burger Time and Bump n Jump were our favorite cartridges.

(My brother found our old Intellivision last year at our parents' house, took it back to his place, and found it still works.)

special request - anyone have photos of the Giant in Annandale before the 1990's? I seem to remember the sign on the roof that had a square box with a big black letter 'G' and the words 'The Quality Food People'. Before that version I believe the sign was big red neon and said Super Giant. Any help would be much appreciated! Love this thread...

I've always wondered about that slogan, is it

a) The quality "food people" (as in the food people are the ones who are quality)
b) The "quality food" people" (as in the food is quality, and they provide it)

I'm sure we'll never know, as there could be all sorts of lawsuits waiting to happen by those in one camp or the other.

1990s[edit]
Cohen died in 1995 at the age of 83. A holding company was formed because "none of the members of my family have had any experience or interest in operating Giant Food..." Three years after Cohen died, Giant was bought by Royal Ahold, a Dutch conglomerate. Ahold promised few changes to the chain, but Ahold was soon plunged into turmoil after a financial scandal. Starting in 1994, they expanded into the Philadelphia/Delaware/South Jersey area, but under the name Super G, as to avoid confusion with future sister chain Giant of Carlisle. In 2005, the decision was made to phase out the name and convert the South Jersey stores to the Stop & Shop banner, however, these stores did not perform well and they have since closed, sold to ShopRite franchises. The Delaware locations were converted to Giant-Landover, and the Pennsylvania locations, due to proximity to the Giant-Carlisle locations, were closed.

More on the Giant Carlysle here including its connection to Martins, A&P and Super Fresh.

The Giant Food that was originally in Springfield Plaza was a Super Giant. It carried everything from clothes, toys, and school supplies to can openers and coffee pots.

Yep. That planter bench was one of our main hang-outs back in the day. As hard as it may be to believe now we regularly sat right there outside the People's in our worn-out Levi's jean jackets getting high as shit. Other than maybe a few times when they'd get a new mall cop who'd run us off nobody would even paid much attention to us. But then people were pretty much getting high everywhere back then. If you saw a group of kids, then there was about a 90% chance that they either already were high or were about to smoke up. lol

Well that was weird, it deleted everything I said. Anyway about the GC Murphy pic in the Little River Shopping Center. I lived just to the left of that shopping center in the roach infested Fairmont Gardens apartments from 1973-1986 as a kid/teen. Got my hair cut at that barber shop all those years too. As a kid I'd walk over and buy candy and 45's at the GC Murphy. They had a lunch counter on the left of the building.

Got my first job at the Dart Drug, which was the middle anchor store in the shopping center. Safeway being the other, and the only one left. It was a good neighborhood to grow up in during the 70's. You could walk to everything. There was a bowling alley, pet store, Penguin Feather, all nearby. Neighborhood started to go downhill in the mid-80's with all the central American immigrants pouring in. They almost burned my building down a few times by leaving things cooking on the stove when they weren't home. Now Annandale is just Koreatown and illegal aliens. I'd never move back there again.

BTW, following up on my last comment, here's a photo of the Outer Loop just east of the Springfield Interchange in 1963. That hill is the one that leads up to the overpass above the railroad (and now Metrorail) tracks just before the Van Dorn Street interchange.

Note the 65-mph speed limit.

Roughly the same place in August 2013:

Worked there as a kid as one of my first jobs. The food actually was pretty darn good. Most all of it was made fresh, not shipped in pre-cooked in a box or pouch and reheated like it would be now. They had those big-ass cans of green beans and a few things like that but I don't remember much of anything else being prepackaged. Everything was kept real clean. Unfortunately that was a big part of my job before I moved up to clearing tables and other executive tasks.

Funny thinking back now. There was a real hierarchy there. Best job in the place was rolling silverware - wrapping it up in the cloth napkins. Two old black women who had been there forever had it down to an art form. Sat next to each other in the back and zipping them out by the hundreds not even looking. Talking shit to each other and everybody else the whole time. Any problem in life you had, they had an answer for whether you wanted it or not. lol Funny as hell. Hadn't thought about them for a long time.

There was a S&W at Landmark? I don't remember that one. As a Kid we would often go the one at 7 Corners. Then the one in Falls Church city. Did S&W move from 7 Corners to Falls Church or where they both open at the same time? It seems to me that we only started going to the Falls Church one after 7 Corners closed.

We also went to the cafeteria at Tysons sometimes, I think that one was a Hot Shoppes. I remember dad, being from England liked the liver and onions there. I preferred S&W though. Loved their spaghetti.

Loved the Hot Shoppes and S&W cafeterias. The S&W in 7 Corners closed and moved to Hillwood Street where the A&P was located.

I never understand why cafeterias are such a Southern thing. It seems like the perfect meal for folks with kids. The food is good and is real food, and its ready no waiting around and having your obnoxious kids bother people while you wait for it to be prepared.

That was the Marriot Cafeteria and a really great one. I remember seeing a old Chevy beat up parked by the Woolworths. Paint faded. But. with 4 big stars on the DOD sicker. I remember Arleigh Burke. When he got older, he and his wife (Roberta, I believe) lived at the Virginian retirement home on Route 50 just east of Fairfax Circle. I worked there during high school and met him many times. Very nice man. It was a Very Big Deal there when they named the ship for him!

I went to that one by Monkey Wards but there was nothing special about. The best one was one in Alexandria. Don't remember exactly where, but it was so huge you could get lost in it. It even had a big tent with bingo in it where I won a footstool. One at Fair City Mall was pretty good too, it even had a sideshow tent with "freaks of nature" in it.

Very likely these were the same group of shows regardless of where you saw them. The smaller carnival companies traipsed as a group from place to place, but the larger ones had component teams that could be assigned and set up in all sorts of configurations depending on the venue. I sure loved them as a kid, and my kids loved them at Seven Corners and Pan Am also. Closest thing these days is Vi Va Vienna, with rides, games, and food done by Virginia-based Cole Amusements. Good times!

There was a large Korvettes store in South Arlington, in the Baileys Crossroads area, but the picture posted above isn't it (see below).

Does anyone remember this incident? It was in the '80's, but after 1985. Three trucks got into an accident on the beltway around the Landmark area and spilled their contents on to the road. One was carrying raw carrots, the second had fresh eggs and the third one had frozen orange juice. It shut down the beltway for hours while the road crews cleaned up the slimy mess.

I remember it being reported at the time, but can't find anything about it now.

Back in the early eighties you could still find those "Zebra" rifles that shot rubber BBs about the same size as air soft rounds today. My buddy and I would go to the toy isle, load a zebra and shoot it at the folks eating lunch at the back counter, the ladies working there would get PISSED. Needless to say we got chased out of the store a few times laughing or assess off... Now you'd be charged with assault or some bullshit...
