That's Groveton Baptist Church. The Chili's used to be one of the many motor inns on Rt.1. One of the remaining ones nearby has recently been demolished, and a Fairfield Inn will be built on that lot. Across Rt. 1 in that pic is what used to be a Memco, then Service Merchandise (looks like the Service Merchandise sign is up...) and is now a Target. I know the church historian, so the date is available.

The picture of Mcdonald's was the first one in the area located on Rt 1 in Hybla Valley. Going south on Rt 1 from Groveton High School located on the right. You can get a three course meal [hamburger, gries and coke] for 45 cents. I graduated 1958 our favorite hang out was Hot Shoppe's in Alexandria we would order Mighty Mo, Coke and hot fudge ice cream cake.

Thanks, I thought that looked like the spot that Baskin Robbins is in now (or at least was the last time I was over that way). I saw Herbie the Love Bug there too, along with countless other movies that I can't think of right now.

Then not too long after that I worked at the Ponderosa Steakhouse across Jefferson Ave.

Does anyone remember a large stone house that was in the neighborhood up Jefferson Ave. from there? I think it was on or near Greenway Blvd. I remember driving by it often as a little kid. I loved it as it looked like a castle. It burned down sometime in the late 70's or early 80's and all that was left were the stone walls and the stairs leading up to the front door. We broke in through a boarded up window one afternoon to explore. It was all rubble inside, but the chimney was still standing and it had a "secret passage" that led from the ground floor up to what had been the second floor hidden inside it. I've searched for an old picture of it, but never been able to find one.

I remember that house. I worked at the Shell station at 50 and Annandale Rd. when that happened. It was like the late 70's. I just remember it being somewhere off of Summerfield Rd.
It was a big news story in that neighborhood. I knew some guys who lived back in there and they told me this story about the place, something about who owned it or something that had happened there, but age isn't letting me remember the story.

This is the old village house motel in Falls Church from the 1970s. Does anyone know if this building still stands?

Hmm....it could have been on Summerfield, would make sense my dad would use that route since it goes straight through to Jefferson St. The only thing I can remember is when they finally tore it down they split the lot into two lots and built two houses in it's place. I can't even remember what they look like now though.

We had one hellacious fire on George Mason Road, which was a part of the George Mason's Estate; he had a farm there on George Mason. There was an old barn there that was converted into housing and it was a bunch of hippies in there that were running the place and on New Year's Day one of the candles caught fire in the house and that was a horrible, horrible fire that burnt the barn to the ground. Nobody got hurt, but, there was a bad situation with the water pressure for the fire department to fight the fire and that was a little over thirty years ago. Now there are two or three houses on the property. But you could see the smoke and you could smell it and I lived about six blocks away, and this was in Greenwood Downs Subdivision so of course everybody of course goes to see what the fire is and that was on New Year's Day.

The Village House was torn down in the 80s to make way for a large building occupied by Kaiser Permanente.

Interesting read. I never knew there was once at airport at Loehmann's Plaza. I'm pretty sure that's not the fire I'm talking about though. This was a big stone house, and it had a big stone stairway that led up to double doors. I do remember there were strange elephant silhouettes above the front doors, but I'm pretty sure the place was never a barn.

Hmmm...just looked at Google maps and it is possible the house was on George Mason Rd, but I still think it was Greenway Blvd or Cameron Rd. Also the house didn't burn to the ground, the stone walls, chimney, and front steps were all still there until they were torn down years later.

The house I remember also didn't burn to the ground. I remember the stone walls remaining and I don't think it ever could have been a barn. I don't remember any elephant silhouettes.
What I remember is it wasn't on Summerfield but off of Summerfield. If you were on Summerfield going towards 29 I think you took a left onto Custis Pkwy and then it could have been Greenway, Cameron or George Mason. It was in that area. The News Years Day thing rings a bell but I don't remember it being wintertime.

The elephant silhouettes were small and above the front door, which didn't face the street. Unless you were right there at the front steps you wouldn't see them. I remember it was the side of the house that faced the street and the front door was on the left side of the house. Too bad they didn't have cell phones back then as I would've certainly taken a few pics when we went exploring in it.

Marylanders are debating the location also. Some claim Rollins Ave near 355. Looks like too many trees too close to the road for me.

Love the Jefferson Theatre photo. I remember the entrance being around the corner on Annandale Road. It's been mentioned how a Baskin-Robbins opened on the corner there. The Around the Corner Barber Shop was located between Baskin-Robbins and the theatre's relocated entrance facing Annandale Road. We used to get our hair cut there on through high school; they charged $7. Don't know whether the barber shop is still there since I seldom drive in that direction these days. I recall the theatre's wall above the relocated entrance being painted blue with the word "Jefferson" up there; it was later painted green when Chili's moved in.

There was a Three Chefs located across the way from the Jefferson in the motel where Bentley's Family Restaurant later moved in.

Regarding segregation, I don't have any pictures (segregation was before my time), but if you go to the State Theatre in Falls Church and head up to the balcony you'll find there are still multiple men's rooms dating back to the days when whites sat downstairs and "coloreds" sat upstairs. When I was a kid we used to go there and even though segregation had been abolished, I don't ever remember any white people going upstairs or any black people coming downstairs. It just wasn't what people did.

I believe the NTI chain operated the State Theatre in the 1970s/1980s. They had another location in Annandale where the small strip mall just east of Popeyes is now (there used to be a Generous George's in that strip mall). I remember seeing "Raiders of the Lost Ark" at the NTI Annandale cinema in 1981.

According to the article, that guy worked at the barber shop by Don Beyer. The Around the Corner barber shop is in the Jefferson Village shopping center on Annandale Rd. and Rt. 50, between the Baskin Robbins and the now Goodwill store. I just came by the Around the Corner barber shop the other day and the lights were on and the sign said open.

There is a book called OLD DOMINION TROLLEY TOO about the Arlington & Fairfax and several other trolley lines. I believe Fairfax City Library used to have a copy. Pictures of the line turn up in other local history books, especially ones on Arlington County, Falls Church, Vienna and Fairfax City. One of the bridge abutments from where the line crossed the Washington & Old DOminion still exists east of Vienna. Also the former Oakton trolley station was converted into a residence and still exists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakton_Trolley_Station

Pretty hilarious that a yearbook would allow HS kids to mention the price of a six pack of beer in those days, even if the legal age was 18.

It truly was a different time. I recall my yearbook (a few years earlier) had numerous references to beer drinking. We also had an outdoor smoking area where kids could go light up between classes.

I worked on West Springfield's yearbook. Up until 1979, we were pretty free to make the book a reflection of the students, with extra weight on the seniors. Next year we got a new faculty sponsor who tightened things.

I need to take a look at the yearbooks and see it there is anything that should be added. (It's taken me weeks to work to the end of this thread.)

One of the Jeffersonian's from the early 70s had a guy who had made a ceramic bong in art class, the picture shows him trying it out, lovely.

"Mom what is that fellow doing?"

You could smoke at Annandale High school back in the early 80's when I was there. Here's proof and some ads from the 1982 yearbook.

Here's a picture from my Annandale High School 1981-1982 yearbook. I do believe the student on the left is holding a beer. Can you imagine the outrage this would cause if it appeared in a yearbook today? If it managed to slip thru, the student would be expelled, sent to substance abuse therapy, and the police might even be called.

I saw that house move back then, it was near the corner of Burke Road near where the 7-11 is today. And its down Burke Road today near the other corner on the right side about across from where Roy Marshalls house. It was a sight to see that move.

Roy Marshall founding member of the Burke FD. Died about 1974.

J.E.B. Stuart class of '82 here. I believe my senior year was the last year of smoking areas in school. I got high more than a couple times in the smoking area and in the park across the street. I remember one guy bringing a bong to school in a guitar case, and as I recall he didn't get caught.

I remember they raised the age to buy beer and wine in stores from 18 to 19 so seniors couldn't buy beer for underclassmen. I also remember regularly going to Uncle Sam's in Ravensworth Shopping Center on Thursday night for ladies' night my senior year. First period English was no fun on Fridays. Hard to imagine a bar full of high school seniors now-a-days. Oh well, kids today have the internet, no need to go out and have fun.

That House is now on the other side of the tracks, it was actually next to where the New Post office is, The Marshal House is at Dead Mans Curve (Next to Burke Nursery), it burned twice, first time it was not on the trailer yet, the house was cut in half. A few days or week later the other half burned. The one in the picture is next to the Simpson house with the added Garage, I remember them making all the telephone poles Higher to get the lines out of the way. Marshall house was rebuilt using the original plans.

WSHS '87 here. My freshman year of high school 1983-84 was the last year that there was a student smoking lounge (outside) where the buses dropped off. I was a non smoker and hated having to walk thru a thick cloud of smoke on the way in to school.

From the 1986 Oakton High School yearbook:

In the spring, the Oakton High School class of '85 imported a bottle of "Cougar Head" beer. The 15 foot model, made of 2X4's and the painted tarp, stood in front of the school for several periods before being removed by unamused administrators.

A few years ago, the Oakton principal went hunting over Christmas out West somewhere, allegedly shot a cougar, was rumored to be having it stuffed and planned to bring it into the school to display it. While I don't believe the rumors (surely he's not THAT dumb?!), I had to question the entire thing. If I were principal of a high school in an upper middle class area like this, I would go to some lengths to avoid having the term "cougar hunter" associated with me...

kwestion, yes! I remember those FCPS gym shirts very well. These were issued circa 1978, maybe and the gym shorts were elastic waist, navy blue heavy cotton, straight cut, like baggy boxer shorts.

Fast forward to 1983 and FCPS restyled their gym uniforms to navy blue polyester with white piping shorts. Shirt was the same, except there was an ugly white outline of Fairfax County around the lettering. The shorts fit everyone snugly, guys and girls. Nothing was left to the imagination. It was like wearing bike shorts. I was lucky enough (and I'm a girl) to sport my brother's hand me down 70s gym shorts.

I spent a considerable amount of PE class on extended water breaks and then huddled at a side entrance with a group of girls to sun bathe. We rolled up our shorts and pulled the bottom edge of our gym shirts thru the neckline to make bikini tops.

I guess that is col pike, I thought it was 236. I was thinking that Amoco was the car wash on 236 but the church steeple in the background gives it away. Is drug fair where the goodwill store is now? I worked at the Amoco car wash on 236 the summer we had the gas crisis, 79 maybe? The car wash was owned by Mr. Cohen and I never did get my last paycheck from that bastard.

those cars were so cool. Some had the 390 engine and you could take a family of 8 and roll down the interstate at 75 mph towing a camper with 300 pounds of luggage tied to the roof rack no problem whatsoever. Stopping with four drum brakes was another issue however.

Notes:
-In old photo, there is a 7/11 on the left, that was there until very recently, it is now an extension of the veternary clinic there.
-Bloom was there for a few months (maybe a year), gone now too - the building is empty.

How did it get the "station" wagon?

After years of calling them that, it seems to fit, but, were they meant to be driven at places like Cameron Station?

I think it's because mom drove to the train station to drop off/pick up pop to/from his daily commute into the city.

Back before they called them station wagons, they called them "suburbans". Chevrolet later stole the term for their truck-based wagons.

"Station wagon" predates cars. It was the sort of wagon that you hitch the team to when you needed to pick up passengers at the train station.

Awesome thread!

I remember when my older brother returned from Vietnam. He bought a brand new vette from Jim McKay. It was awesome.

Station wagons, LOL

Knew a guy in Springfield who had one of these back in the 80's, actually very respectable, think it was a 442. The roof glass was really cool.

Thats a olds vista cruiser. I think there was a Buick version too.
My uncle had one and as I recall it had 5 ash trays each with its own popout 12volt lighter.

Speaking of Oldsmobile versus Buick, Which one was considered the higher end product amongst the GM clone cars?

Did it go Chevy, Buick, Olds, Cadillac?

Or was it Chevy, Olds, Buick, Cadillac?

I guess there were really not as many clones amongst the Cadillac lineup as there were with the other three.

They were roughly equivalent along the same line as Chevy/Pontiac.

Chevy/Pontiac, Buick/Olds, Cadillac
